I'm due a baby next month and considering the name Laura.
Any opinions?
My mum said it's too 80s!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Beautiful name. Timeless.

Cheepcheepcheep · 13/11/2023 19:10

My name!

I wasn’t a fan of it when I was younger, but that was mostly because it was so popular (by extension I have named both my children names outside of the top 100).

As an adult I love it. Classic, not too frilly, great symbolism with the laurel, some great historical ones, a classic film - and one added bonus - I work internationally and pretty much every country in the Americas and Europe have no issue saying my name. Which is surprisingly helpful.

itsmyp4rty · 13/11/2023 19:06

I think it's a really pretty name, definitely classis and much nicer sounding than Lara or Lyra IMO.

SallyWD · 13/11/2023 19:03

Lovely.

SkyTree · 13/11/2023 18:56

Adore it, it’s a classic. I don’t agree that it sounds dated like some other names popular in the 80s and 90s, it’s far too classic for that.

wannabetraveler · 13/11/2023 18:46

Beautiful. Classic but not dated. Strong as well as feminine. I love it.

junebirthdaygirl · 13/11/2023 18:45

Sorry meant to say Laura

Daisybuttercup12345 · 13/11/2023 18:45

Laura is a beautiful name x

junebirthdaygirl · 13/11/2023 18:44

Can't go wrong with Lara..l like it

maddiemookins16mum · 13/11/2023 18:43

It’s a bit dull, but there are far worse names out there.

SquigglePigs · 13/11/2023 18:42

I really like it. A lovely, classic recognised name that isn't common in this age group.

But then again, Hannah was on my short list and that's mentioned above!

I also like similar era names like Sarah and Zoe too (there was a Zoe in my DD's nursery class last year though!).

Someone else mentioned Lorna as another option if your Mum talks you out of Laura, and that's lovely too.

MotherOfVizslas · 13/11/2023 18:34

I love it

TheKnittedCharacter · 13/11/2023 18:34

I went to school with a few Lauras.

It’s an ok name but very blah.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 13/11/2023 18:33

It’s a lovely name, I really like it. It’s very difficult to say though if you struggle with pronouncing your Rs.

HollyLondoner · 13/11/2023 18:32

I'm 32 and work with 4 x 30 something's called Laura. I think Lara is much nicer!

ChocoChocoLatte · 13/11/2023 18:31

I had about 6 Laura’s in my class who are now all in their late 40s lol

if you love it, love it.

ChannelNo19EDT · 13/11/2023 18:30

I like it. I agree that Lara is more fashionable right now but Laura is classic. I know a lovely Laura.

Beaverbridge · 13/11/2023 18:27

It's a lovely name.

Gloriousvoice · 13/11/2023 18:23

Leona is beautiful

Tygertiger · 13/11/2023 18:23

It’s a lovely name, and although popular in the 80s it’s a lot older than that - plenty of Victorian Lauras. I would definitely use it.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 13/11/2023 18:22

I knew a load of Laura's about 20 years ago but haven't heard of any younger ones since. It's an okay name.

toastofthetown · 13/11/2023 18:09

I find Laura quite dated. Like Emma, Hannah, and Amy. I'd expect Laura to be the mum and not the baby. That doesn't mean it's unusable though. Lara or Flora feel fresher, and Lyra is very trendy at the moment.

Lyra is bloody awful!

Bideshi · 13/11/2023 18:17

A name as classic and lovely as that can't be dated. And it won't date in the future either, whereas Lyra will.

Workawayxx · 13/11/2023 18:15

Lovely - classic but underused currently
