Partner and I can't agree from the list below!

glasshalffull0 · 12/11/2023 18:33

We don't know the gender yet but every time I suggest a name my partner either says flat out "no" or "hmm that's ok I suppose". He doesn't seem to love any! The names below are the ones I like. What are your opinions on them and do you have any similar alternatives?

I've listed them and next to them put my partners opinion

Erin - ok
Grace - ok
Molly - dogs name
Evelyn - hates it
Emilia - hates it with an E
Mia - ok
Isla - ok
Sophia - ok
Rosie - no

Oliver - no
George - no
James - ok
Jack - no
Louis - ok

I feel like we're never going to name our baby at this rate!

@marshmallowfinder and Jamima too close to Shamima.
Both names look Arabic or Middle Eastern and OP's list is run-of-the-mill UK names.

timoteigirl · 20/11/2023 15:10

All the names in your lists seem bog standard names. Usually women want more usual and men more ordinary. What has he suggested instead?

Mia = missing in action

Other suggestions ..
Amal Jamima - Amal Clooney is very smart.

Amal is too close to Anal.

peaceinourtime · 20/11/2023 14:24

Names from your list: Mia, Isla and Sophia have been done to death.

Amelie is lovely. What about
Ottilie
Aurelia
Summer
Sienna
Orla
Eden
Frances
Annie
Harper

I like James, it’s underused as a first name. How about:
Jude
Joshua
Harry
Finley
Oscar
Otis
Hayden
Henry

My DH and I couldn't agree on names either, but I felt he was deliberately obtuse about it. I just kept working out a list of names that I liked and then after DD was born I gave him my final list to choose from and in the end he said didn't really mind so I named her my favourite.

KirstenBlest · 13/11/2023 09:03

Erin - not keen, nothingy and a bit harsh sounding
Grace - a lot to live up to, not keen on the sound
Molly - like it but a bit twee
Evelyn - DH hates it -me too
Emilia - too close to Amelia, which I don't like -A-ME-lia
Mia - overused and looks prettier than it sounds - ME-uh
Isla - overused
Sophia - overused
Rosie - like it but a bit twee
Amelie - looks prettier than it sounds, too close to Emily

Oliver - like
George - ok
James - love
Jack - ok but I know several
Louis - a bit twee

It looks like you've only looked at the names that are currently popular and most are overused.
Your child will be Firstname Surname most of the time, so you need a name that flows with the surname.

I'd look at names that are less popular and try to establish why/what makes you like the name.
Consider things like:

  • whether the name is likely to cause spelling or pronunciation issues
(Amelia/Emilia, Amelie/Emily, Mia/Mya/Maya/Maia, Louis/Louie)
  • if name will get shortened, (Amelia/Milly, Oliver/Olly, James/Jamie/Jim)
  • and if the name will run into the surname (Jack Hughes/Jaccuse, Mia Nelson/Me an' Elson)
  • avoid anything that sounds a bit silly. (Isla White, Erin Perrin)

You both need to like the name, and the baby (child, adult) will need to liv with it.

user1492757084 · 13/11/2023 06:21

So you have some lovely names to use .. .
James
Louis
Sophia
Isla
Erin
Grace
Mia
Amelie

Also make a list of any family names that you wish to use. Some first names will be eliminated as the family names will not go with them.
Eliminate some initials if they don't work with your surname.

Mumofgirls2017 · 13/11/2023 05:55

I’d pick Erin or James from the ones your partner thinks are acceptable! Other ideas

Both download the Kinder app. He can then just swipe left and right on a list of names and it'll create a list of names you both like.

You need to find a name you both love, don’t settle.

we individually wrote a list of names we liked and compared lists until we had narrowed it down to a boys name and a girls name.

We did this too. Names were then struck off next time we looked at it.

OP, you have a lovely lost of ideas. Which do you prefer?

Toddler101 · 12/11/2023 23:06

HardcoreLadyType · 12/11/2023 22:35

If you don’t know the sex of the baby, then I’m guessing it’s fairly early on.

Maybe he just feels it’s too soon to be seriously choosing a name?

Not everyone wants to know the sex until baby arrives though! OP could be about to pop for all we know, just saying! 😂 💛

BirdDogs · 12/11/2023 23:04

I like Mia and James best from your list x

scrunchmum · 12/11/2023 22:59

There's a app called "kinder" where you can each swipe right or left on names (yes like Tinder) and see your matches. May be worth doing to get him to commit to some names...

Laurendzx · 12/11/2023 22:54

Favourites are Rosie or Isla for a girl and Louis for a boy out of those. I’m into slightly more unusual names though, these are lovely but all just a bit too safe for me I think. Very unlikely to find anyone who outright hates them though

steppemum · 12/11/2023 22:52

But don't expect him to properly engage with names until you are 6 months plus!!

steppemum · 12/11/2023 22:51

These are all your suggestions.

Does he have a list? If not why not?
Get a baby book and go through it with a colour pen. Mark all the names that you woudl consider. Get him to do the smae with a different colour. See where the overlaps are.

At 37 weeks I was told on a friday that I had to be induced on Monday and they told us it was a girl (we hadn't wanted to know).
Over the weekend we sat up in bed with the name book and went through all the girls names until we foudn one we both liked.

SkaneTos · 12/11/2023 22:46

So these are the names he thinks are OK?
Erin
Grace
Mia
Isla
Sophia
Amelie

James
Louis

They are all lovely names!
Which one of these do you prefer? Do you have a favourite?

Is the baby due very soon? Can you try not talking about it at all for a month? Then you can both look at it with new eyes.

HardcoreLadyType · 12/11/2023 22:35

BlazingWorld · 12/11/2023 22:31

Personally I would pronounce Emilia and Amelia differently, I can’t see how you would pronounce them the same. I pronounce the first syllable of Emilia like the beginning of Emma and the first of Amelia like the beginning of Amber.

I like all of your names except Oliver, you have my sister and DS on there. Can you offer DH some nickname alternatives- like, James could be Jamie?

ladygindiva · 12/11/2023 22:27

Erin or Louis then.

ExplodingSmittens · 12/11/2023 22:23

And I prefer Sophia or James too Wink
