Are your DC's names still your favourite?

And how old are your DC? 5 and 2 here and I still haven't come across a name I'd rather have used for them but I expect that will only last so long.

It makes me sad to think that at some point I might find a baby name I prefer to the one I have given them. What's been your experience?

DC1 (DD7) - fairly unusual (perhaps top 500? - though have met two others, one older and one younger!) - still probably one of my top names, though there are a couple of others I like as much/may prefer. One more common and one even less so. Only had one boy name picked out which wasn't even on the shortlist for DC2 (DS5).

DC2 - high end of top 100, though getting more popular. Again, one of my favourites, but there's two others I like as much. One probably around the same popularity, one much less common.

Definitely done with DC, but would love to use those names 😁

Notmetoo · 16/11/2023 17:04

I probably wouldn't use the same names now tastes change. But I couldn't imagine my children being called anything else. They are their names. It matters less what they are called, what matters is who they are.

dressedforcomfort · 16/11/2023 17:02

DS's name wasn't my absolute favourite favourite at the time. But it was in my top 10 and the only name DH and I could agree on (and we went through LOADS of names.)

I still like it tbh. It's classic but underused, it's easy to spell and pronounce and DS is the only one in his class. No regrets.

princefamilypaper · 13/11/2023 17:24

Yes I absolutely love my daughter's name. I'm pregnant and can't find anything I love as much

Cakeorchocolate · 11/11/2023 21:26

Yes still happy with chosen names.
Youngest is only a few weeks though. His name has grown on me more since he was born. I hope it continues to.

With both kids we didn't know anyone with the names but then seemed to come across multiple others with them afterwards.

BotterMon · 11/11/2023 21:19

Yes - in their 30's!!

when I went back to my name lists for DC2 I didn't want to use a lot of them anymore as I no longer liked them

Yes, we had a boy first, and then a girl. Despite us being very sure quite early on , of the girl's name we would have used if dc1 had been a boy, it just wasn't considered for dc2 .

It's quite odd really. I still like it as a name, but just had 'moved on. Odd, as it wasn't particularly "fashionable".

Do most others use the name they didn't use for dc1, for dc2 ?

No, all of my children know what names I would have given them if they'd been the opposite sex, and I didn't actually use any of those names for subsequent children. But I'm fairly sure that if I'd had a boy after my youngest daughter I'd have used the boys' name I'd chosen for her.

ScruffMuffin · 10/11/2023 22:12

DD1 is 18. I compromised on her name - I went for one we could agree on, and used the name I really wanted for her middle name. I wish I'd put them the other way round, but she is very pleased with what she has.

DD2 is 15 and her name is still probably my favourite. Her dad picked her middle name, and I think it's meh.

BinkyBeaufort · 10/11/2023 21:35

DS has a name I decided on when I was just a child myself. He's 35 now, and I'd still choose it.
DH chose DDs name, but I'd still choose the one I loved back then (even longer ago than DS). If that makes sense.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/11/2023 18:41

Mine are in their 20’s and I still like their names, although not sure they would have the same ones if I were naming them today., although they are quite popular for todays babies.

I am very pleased though that ds2 was a boy, I now really don’t like the girls name he would have been.

ginasevern · 10/11/2023 18:23

My son is in his 40's and the name I chose back then was really, really unusual. It is a classic name (not moonchild or anything like that!). Fast forward to the late 90's and it became trendy and was everywhere. I still love the name though, it's just a shame everyone else discovered it.

PurBal · 10/11/2023 18:22

DS1: love
DS2: always felt “meh” about it. I really liked a different name but DH didn’t agree. He’s only 4 mo so hoping I get used to it.

DowntonCrabby · 10/11/2023 18:18

I loved a load of “old lady” names for DD19, everyone hated them and talked me out of them. She’s nothing other than her name now but I wish I’d stood my ground as a matter of principle. Old lady names are everywhere for under 10’s now!

DS is names after my Ddad so has an old man (still quite popular) name that no one argued with. Grin

RandomUsernameHere · 10/11/2023 18:17

I don't regret their names but they were never my favourite names to begin with, just the best out of the ones we could agree on.

RandomQuestionOfTheDay · 10/11/2023 18:16

DS1’s name yes. DS2’s name mostly yes, but there was a name on the list I dismissed as too unusual and I do wish we’d used it, as kids have a huge variety of names nowadays so it wouldn’t have stood out. However DS2 says that other name is awful and he likes his name better.

Teens.

MrsMitford3 · 10/11/2023 18:15

Mine all in their 20's and their names suit them so well.

I would 100% pick all three again!!!

RuthW · 10/11/2023 18:13

I like dd's name but wouldn't choose it now. It wasn't in the top 100 when she was born 27 years ago now it's in the top ten.

WellWellSaidTheRockingChair · 10/11/2023 18:01

DS1 name was a compromise, I never truly loved it. As it turns out, neither do he and he changed it in his 20s.

I still love DD1’s name, though I would probably choose something more classic now.

HennyPenny123 · 10/11/2023 15:26

I still love both their names, but the eldest name has become VERY popular. Wasn't even in the top 100 when she was born, but now in the top 5. So I hear lots of parents shouting it after their toddlers in supermarkets. My youngest is not popular at all where we live, but she dislikes it and wishes she had a more 'normal' name. You cant win!

SallyWD · 10/11/2023 13:10

No, they were never my favourites. Probably not even in my top 30! We had a find a name we both liked that worked in 3 different languages. It was very difficult.
But quickly their names became them so now I absolutely love their names. I can't think of the names without seeing them in my mind.

sprigatito · 10/11/2023 13:04

Yes, mine are 21 and 19 now and I adore their names. I'd still choose them both, and they really suit their personalities.

SneezyEvie · 10/11/2023 13:03

My eldest, yes. My youngest’s name was never my favourite as it was a compromise.

I suffer with OCD and the fact it’s not ‘just right’ bothers me continuously but it’s something I have to live with.

jellybe · 10/11/2023 08:09

I love their names as they are them if that makes sense. I've not come across any names that I would want to change the DC to but there are names I would use now if I was having another that I wouldn't have thought of using then.

when I went back to my name lists for DC2 I didn't want to use a lot of them anymore as I no longer liked them.

boudiccathecat · 10/11/2023 08:02

Their names suit them, and i feel as if they are independent of me now, as if they were plucked out of the air, if you see what I mean. The names belong to them now and it feels odd to think that it was our choice.
