Opinions on Grant. Too dated? Handsome? Hate it? Thanks

I think of it as a decent Scottish name, a bit out of fashion now but not bad at all. I do think accent matters though.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/11/2023 13:28

Don't like it. Reminds me of my great-uncle who was not a very pleasant character. He'd be 120 if he was still with us.

Aurasauras · 11/11/2023 13:25

I personally love it because it makes me think of money being given and things being allowed. It’s a power word. I think you should go for it.

LadyGAgain · 11/11/2023 13:20

Too close to Grunt so conjures pig imagery to me.

Lifeinlists · 11/11/2023 12:42

Grant Schapps would be enough to put me off it permanently. Though he did go by an alias too so there's an idea.

I say Grant , short A, and DH says Grant, long A, so there's that as well.

TidyDancer · 11/11/2023 12:36

I knew twins called Grant and Phil when I was younger. 😂 they'd be maybe 30 now. I always felt a bit sorry for them but they were awful feral little shits back then so only a bit. 😂

There's nothing actually 'wrong' with the name but I can't imagine seeing a baby Grant these days knowing the Mitchell connection!

theduchessofspork · 11/11/2023 12:29

80s estate agent

Dances with his tie around his head on a Friday night with his mate Spencer

So no

Guy is nice though

HennyPenny123 · 10/11/2023 15:22

I like it, I think its a good strong name. Maybe because I know a doctor called Grant, I think its a sophisticated name for wealthy doctor types 😁

StoatofDisarray · 10/11/2023 14:01

I like it!

Pemba · 10/11/2023 13:58

EastEnders. Should be a surname only (not even particularly nice for a surname). Not a nice sound. Bit dated too.

Topseyt123 · 10/11/2023 10:24

Very dated. Unpleasant sound to it for me. It might be OK as a middle name if you really must, but even then I'd prefer something else.

PurpleChrayne · 10/11/2023 10:20

It's a bit old fashioned. Not a pleasant sound either. Too close to grunt.

HoHoHoliday · 10/11/2023 10:12

I really like it! It's a refreshing change from the wave of twee Alfies, Ollies, Charlies, etc. It's a nice, classic, elegant name.

MerryChristmasToYou · 10/11/2023 10:11

The one I know gets called Grunt.
I say Grant to rhyme with Pant, others might say it to rhyme with Can't.

Fine as a middle name.

MaloneMeadow · 09/11/2023 23:51

Gives me visions of a 50 year old bloke. Too aged for a child these days, OP. It would be like naming him Bob or Richard! It’s a nice name but just doesn’t seem right

Kiwiburgh · 09/11/2023 23:14

I love the name Grant, I'm from Scotland.
The Grants i know are all good looking wealthy men which helps.😊 I think it's a handsome name.
I've found people in Scotland and especially Americans prefer the name compared to lots of those in England. I think Eastenders has something to do with it? Though I've never seen the program myself.🙈
We were going to use it but think we're going to go for Euan instead.

BoleynMemories13 · 09/11/2023 22:48

Awful, dated, ugly name.

With regards to pronunciation, yes it does rhyme with plant but I assume the point the other poster was making is that plant (and therefore Grant) are pronounced differently in different parts of the country (pl-ant vs pl-ar-nt, gr-ant vs gr-ar-nt). So accents will change the pronunciation with this name.

I don't think it's like the other names you've mentioned at all, which are all very classic.

TotalOverhaul · 09/11/2023 22:37

I used to do grant applications for small companies, so the word Grant makes me think of endless forms that need to be filled in.

Gowlett · 09/11/2023 22:36

Might be nice with a Scottish accent alright.
With a hard R, I like that.

Where I live it’s, Gr-Ant, with a long A.
On Eastenders it’s, Grawnt.

Whiskerson · 09/11/2023 22:33

EastEnders. That's the overwhelmimg association for me. But I'm sure meeting a real Grant would override that, especially if he was a small boy rather than a balding Cockney gangster.

It's one of those names that suffers from a North-South divide in pronunciation - like Sandra, Alexander. I always think that must be annoying because it's not something the person can "correct", they just have to put up with the fact that half the country will say their name differently.

BatildaB · 09/11/2023 22:31

I love it, sounds like a cowboy name to me. I’m not allowed Gale or Dean, wonder if Grant would be more acceptable.

mintich · 09/11/2023 22:31

I love the name Grant. It was on my list of names. I am Scottish though if that makes a difference!

ItBeganOnThe9th · 09/11/2023 22:29

Wouldn't use it for first name. I don't think. Anyway. I miss hearing names like Matthew, Stephen, John etc.

Joolsin · 09/11/2023 22:29

Bald middle-aged man with a beer belly.

ItBeganOnThe9th · 09/11/2023 22:26

Doesn't it just rhyme with plant?

Although I have no plans of using the name, I stumbled upon it on another forum and realised that I haven't heard it in a a while. It strikes me as handsome, much like the names John or Mark.
