Hi,

desperetely need help my brain has completed overloaded with names now having gone through the top 1000. Husband has vetoed all of my top 30 😭so left with these back up ones. However, have now spent so long debating names that I just don’t feel anything for any of them anymore and dd due in 3 days.

Possible names that we have not both vetoed are

Maeve
Flora
Cecily
Tessa
Clementine
Faye
Arabella
Anna
Melody
Imogen
Oriana
Meredith
Serena
Allanah
Allegra
Camilla
Alice

Of your list, I like:

Maeve
Flora
Cecily
Tessa
Clementine
Arabella
Anna
Imogen
Meredith
Serena
Allegra
Camilla
Alice

WowOK · 09/11/2023 10:01

I only like Alice and Imogen

SE13Mummy · 09/11/2023 10:00

Alice
Anna
Cecily
Imogen

Those are my favourite names from your list. Alice is popular but in a classic way rather then a more faddy way that will forever identify her as being born in the 2020s. Like Imogen, Alice doesn't have a vowel-sound at the end which is something I like as so many girls names are very 'vowely'. That said, Anna is a classic I love even though it starts and ends with a vowel sound.

Your list of names already used by close friends/family is lovely! Eloise, Florence, Hannah, Harriet and Mary are others that might work?

SleepingStandingUp · 09/11/2023 09:57

Maeve - old lady vibe, I like it.
Flora - buttery spread
Cecily - too sssy.
Tessa - meh
Clementine - cute, but do you like the derivatives?
Faye - bleugh
Arabella - was on my list. Love it.
Anna - classic, cool
Melody - no
Imogen - really like
Oriana - love. Had Ariana on my list

Meredith - meh
Serena - meh
Allanah - I like this
Allegra - no
Camilla - don't name her after the Queem
Alice - same as Anna, classic and cool

SouperWoman · 09/11/2023 09:57

My personal faves from your list are:
Arabella (top choice as then you can nickname her Bella which was on your original favourite list)
Melody
Oriana
Serena
Allegra

But…
you sound really worn out and as if your DH is taking advantage of that. 🙁 I am a big fan of mum having the final say on baby names because you are the one doing the work making them. So if there are names you still would like to consider, bring them back into the mix and insist he reconsiders.

Also, have you looked at more unusual versions of your original favourite names? eg Carlotta instead of Charlotte, or other ‘Bella’ names

On your ‘vetoed’ list, I like

Charlotte
Grace
Sienna
Isabella
Esme
Juliet
Elodie

Good luck with your new DD @Insearchofnames

RedCoffeeCup · 09/11/2023 09:45

Love - Cecily, Tessa, Anna, Alice

Like - Flora, Clementine, Arabella, Imogen, Serena, Camilla, Alana (prefer this spelling to Allanah)

Bin - Maeve, Faye, Melody, Oriana, Meredith, Allegra

Mrsjayy · 09/11/2023 09:42

Do a new list 6 of yours 4 of his you are carrying and about to delivery her so you get priority and choose from the top 10 whittle them down. 30 vetoes is bloody ridiculous!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 09/11/2023 09:41

Oops said Melody twice.

You could try Elodie (friend is French and called that).

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 09/11/2023 09:40

I like Anna, Melody, Meredith, Melody, Faye and the rest I’m meh about.

I don’t like Maeve, Cecily or Arabella.

PinkDeer · 09/11/2023 09:20

Has your husband come up with any names himself? What’s on his list?

These are mostly his list I am just a lot slower to veto!! As otherwise we are not going to have any left…… The only hard vetos I have used are for Madeleine (as I can’t shake the McCaan association and just see that poor girls face in my minds eye). I also vetoed Constance as he didn’t want it to be a shortened to Connie and I just can’t imagine saying Constance 50 x a day. I also vetoed one other as when I googled with our last name a v adult video web page came up as the top result - a real shame as I otherwise liked the name 😂🙄

my original ideas ( which he did not like) were

more popular options like :
Charlotte
Sophie/Sophia
Bella
Rose
Grace
Maya
Sienna
Louisa
Isabella
Eva
Amelia
Esme
Thea etc

He is not a fan of the “popular and overused”

My original slightly more niche ones were Elise
Juliet
Rosanna
Elodie
Briony
Iona
Cressida .

I have taught for years so went with names I associate with really lovely girls.

names I love but can’t have due to v close friends and family are:
beatrice
felicity
georgia
eliza
freya
selena (checked with friend about considering Serena and she is happy with this and is v blunt & honest)

StopRainingOrElse · 09/11/2023 09:35

I think Anna is a lovely classic name.

Maeve (sounds harsh)
Flora (margarine)
Cecily (bit wet)
Tessa (ok)
Clementine (overly popular right now)
Arabella (precocious sounding)
Melody (precocious sounding)
Imogen (nice)
Oriana (P&O cruise ship)
Meredith (precocious sounding)
Serena (tennis)
Allanah (no)
Allegra (sounds like a 70s car)
Camilla (oh dear no)
Alice (ok)

LadyDanburysHat · 09/11/2023 09:30

From your list I love Clementine. That was on my list. Also like Meredith and Allegra, and what about Elodie instead of Melody.

Oganesson118 · 09/11/2023 09:29

I like Arabella, Anna, Meredith, Allegra and Camilla.

user1492757084 · 09/11/2023 09:27

Melody is the only name I dislike. The others are lovely.

I would not spell Allanah like that. I would use the usual Alanna or Alannah. Otherwise all nice.

My favourites are ..
Camilla
Allegra
Alanna
Cecily
Arabella
Anna
Alice
Serena

GlitteryGreen · 09/11/2023 09:21

I've always loved Meredith x

PinkDeer · 09/11/2023 09:20

Has your husband come up with any names himself? What’s on his list?

PinkDeer · 09/11/2023 09:19

I can’t believe your husband has vetoed your favourite 30 names! I think I’d go back to the first thirty names you chose and pick my favourite from them. Bella is very popular at the moment, seems every baby I’ve heard of recently has Bella in her name. But your other top names are lovely.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 09/11/2023 09:14

I love Alice or Maeve. The few I have known over the years have been lovely.

Goldbar · 09/11/2023 09:12

Rather than Thea, if you like this, could you go with Althea or Alethea and have Thea as nn?

WonderingAboutBabies · 09/11/2023 09:12

I'm not pregnant but I already know I'm naming my daughter (if I have one) Lyra. I've loved the name for years and I've never found anything I like more... It might work for you and your DH :)

Newgirls · 09/11/2023 09:11

Maeve might suddenly be very trendy following sex education?

Goldbar · 09/11/2023 09:09

If you want further name suggestions, if I was having a girl, this would be the present shortlist

  • Elowen
  • Matilda
  • Jean
  • Christabel
  • Leonora
  • Margaret
  • Margot
  • Eliza or Liza
Goldbar · 09/11/2023 09:01

Of your list, I like Meredith, Flora and Alice.

I agree with the previous poster that Clemency is nicer than Clementine, which is a bit "floral".

Insearchofnames · 09/11/2023 09:01

Just to add to the above equally I don’t want the fact that I now feel a bit tired of the name debate with DH to result in me missing out on giving dd a lovely name just because it wasn’t one of my original ideas or end up burdening her with something awful because I am in a rush to just settle on something! This is why I thought feedback from people that are not dh would be helpful. Very grateful for all the ideas and suggestions.

Oh I love Elise (and Eloise) and Briony/Bryony. Iona is pretty but poss too much scope for “I own a…” jokes.

I think what is popular and overused varies hugely… lots of your original “too popular” list, I know only one or zero of, and I know quite a lot of kids. (sophia/sophie though…there are loads!)
