Meredith?

Jimminycricketz · 08/11/2023 07:10

Thoughts on Meredith?

I also quite like Michaela and Merryn?

Please feel free to suggest any other M names?

Veto’d names already include: Melrose, Mackenzie, Margery.

Names we’re a bit ambivalent about: Marietta, Margot, Maeve.

Please help!

Meredith is a beautiful name. There was a girl called Gabriel Meredith way back in exDh’s family, always known as Merrie.

Meredith is lovely.

BitofaStramash · 08/11/2023 18:54

Meredith is lovely.

I don't like Michaela at all.

Merryn, Mirren, Murron all nice too.

Somewhatchallenging · 08/11/2023 18:30

Meredith is just a Welsh surname/boy’s name at best.
I think Madeleine is a lot nicer.

LlynTegid · 08/11/2023 17:49

Immediately I thought of Meredith Kercher, murdered in Italy. So it would be a no for me.

LittleGreenDuck · 08/11/2023 16:49

Love Meredith, also Miriam.

carddino · 08/11/2023 16:17

I have a Merida and a Maisie

Also love Mabel.

MerryChristmasToYou · 08/11/2023 16:06

Not for me, and it's a pretty name. Madeleine is my preferred spelling.

Jimminycricketz · 08/11/2023 15:58

Thanks everyone!

Love Mhairi/ Mhari, but baby will have an aunty with that name so it’s probably not the one.

Suggested Martha but it was a straight no from my partner!

Interesting that Madeline (or any of its spellings) hasn’t come up as a suggestion. I quite like it but my partner says it just makes him think of McCann. Is this a particularly strong / off-putting association with the name?

Love it.

How about Mara or Marissa?

NotFastButFurious · 08/11/2023 13:08

I prefer Merryn to Meredith which feels a bit frumpy to me! I know both and they all get called Merry most of the time.
Margot and Maeve are nice too.

I really like Meredith, but from what I've heard, the correct way to pronounce it in Welsh sounds quite different to how most people think it's pronounced, and that would put me off using it.
I'm not Welsh so I may have got this wrong, but I think in Welsh it's more like mehREDith, whereas it's commonly pronounced MERRAdith.

Spot on there. And it's a boy's name.

peaceinourtime · 08/11/2023 11:54

Meredith is a beautiful name, go for it OP

PickledScrump · 08/11/2023 11:26

I absolutely love it, was my front runner for a while but I wasn’t keen on the most common nicknames. It’s great you have so many positive responses to it, when I posted about it the responses were quite mixed. A few people mentioned that it was originally a Welsh name and said slightly differently but it is also spelled differently, it’s not likely to be a problem.

it’s a great strong name. We also considered Merida

Like Cameron Diaz, Anderson McDowell, Reese Witherspoon and others. Aren't they their middle names?

Jordan, Cameron, Scott, Mason, Cooper, Brandon, Grant I know at least one of each of those. Can't say I like them as first names,

I've always liked Meredith and don't think it sounds harsh in the slightest.
I knew it as a surname first, so it seems like calling a child Mactavish or Mortimer

It's often done for boys, though. Jordan, Cameron, Scott, Mason, Cooper, Brandon, Grant, and so on. Seems to be common nowadays in naming girls too - Morgan, Mackenzie, Harper, Madison, Addison, Cameron, Jordan, Ashley. Some of those were quite fashionable when my children were babies, which is a long time ago now. Perhaps more of a US thing originally, but it seems well established here now.

LetItGoHome · 08/11/2023 07:48

I enjoy Margot and Merryn from your list. Mabel is also a great name ❤️

I know a Meredith and a Merryn. They are both men.

ButtonDownBev · 08/11/2023 07:43

Love the name Meredith with the nickname Edie. Was on my list but had boys!
