Final few boys names

DS is 1 week old today & we still can decide on a name! Final choices are:

  • Alexander
  • Nicholas
  • Henry
  • Dillon

I don't love any of them particularly, I feel we need to name him soon instead of just 'baby' & it will help me & DD (who has just turned 3) bond with him more! DD has a traditional name so we wanted something in keeping with that.

Any other suggestions?

Nathan?

Aria999 · 09/11/2023 01:28

I think of Dillon (as opposed to Dylan) as a girl's name.

I like the Nico shortening for Nicholas.

I quite like Henry.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/11/2023 01:15

Alexander works great with a short surname so would be my pick - and its the most timeless and traditional of your choices too (Nicholas and Henry are lovely but have varied much more in popularity/trends and Dylan is only traditional in Wales).

Other picks like Alexander in tradition or in style:
William
Edward
Joseph
Michael
Daniel
James (could be punchy with a short surname like James Bond)
John (ditto. ala John Wick)
Robert
Samuel
Frederick
Maximilian
Laurence

If you like Alexander, are you sure you don't like any of the possible shortenings? As well as Alex, there's also Al, Ali, Zander/Xander, Zand/Xand, Sandy, Eck, Sasha, Sandro, Alec, Lex, Andy...there's probably others. Just get in there first and start using your favourite.

Mumaway · 07/11/2023 21:53

I like Alexander. Henry is a fat swotty name.

resm · 07/11/2023 21:52

Alexander Nicholas or Nicholas Alexander have a lovely ring to them. Henry also works well as a middle name for both.

Other suggestions:

Daniel
Oliver
James
Oscar
Isaac

Thanks everyone for some great ideas! we have lots more to think about & will not choose until we're certain.

I'd have went for Alexander or Nicholas before now but not keen on the inevitable shortening of them.

Our surname is only 3 letters long so some names sound a bit odd with it.

Nicholas, David or Alistair

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 07/11/2023 07:55

Alexander from your list.

Also suggest Benjamin

17caterpillars1mouse · 07/11/2023 07:52

I love Dillon.

I love Henry too but it's too popular for me. Dillon Henry?

Nicholas is lovely but I dislike Nick and Nicky so personally wouldn't use. I find Alexander a little done to death unless using a more unique nn like Sascha rather than the usual Alex or Xander. The world needs a break from all the Xander's imo

Daisybuttercup12345 · 06/11/2023 21:48

I like Alexander.
Don't like Dillon at all.
Henry quite nice.
Don't like nickerless.
William
Matthew
David
Michael
James
Edward
Peter

Nicholas I like.

What about Cassius?

theduchessofspork · 06/11/2023 20:30

Nicholas nn Nico. it’s v nice

Far too many Alexanders and Henrys about. I’m not mad on Dylan but I’d spell it like that if you do.

I wouldn’t rush into it though

Alistair
Patrick
Laurence (Laurie)
Daniel
Michael
Jonah
Nathaniel
Matthias
Tobias
Barnabas
Zachary
Robert (Robbie, Bobby)
Jonathan
Tristram
Xavier

Victor
Wilfred
Walter
Augustus

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 06/11/2023 20:00

Henry and Alexander are both great

Kiwiburgh · 06/11/2023 17:20

I like Alexander, its also in my top 3 for when Ds2 is born.
Just have to make sure you like Alex or another nn as it's very likely be shortened by friends and family especially when he starts school. :)

Minniejam · 06/11/2023 17:17

They’re all lovely names but are there no names you love? Are you love but don’t feel like you can choose?

BlazingWorld · 06/11/2023 17:04

I think Alexander. I have an Alexander, and was similarly meh about the name when we named him, but I now absolutely love it.
Other suggestions - Sebastian, Lucas, Bertram, Max

chocomoccalocca · 06/11/2023 17:04

I like more traditional but not as commonly heard of that makes sense so things like

James
Wilfred
Albert
Lucas
Jonathan

Also love Oliver but was a bit too popular for me

Swirls346 · 06/11/2023 17:01

I have a Henry, I love his name

Mumofgirls2017 · 06/11/2023 16:41

Henry or alexander

boysmuminherts · 06/11/2023 16:26

Any of them except Dillon. Dylan also awful.

SprinkleOfSunak · 06/11/2023 16:23

Nicholas.

AdaColeman · 06/11/2023 16:20

Nicholas is my favourite from your list, a strong classic name.

Henry so often gets Harry as a nn which I'm not keen on.

I'm not keen on Dillon.

Some ideas....
Keir
Richard
Joel
Jasper

UsingChangeofName · 06/11/2023 16:09

I like all of the first 3.

Definitely not Dillon. I don't even really like Dylan.

I guess it depends what your surname is, and, to a lesser extent what your dd's name is. Not that I think you need to 'match' a sibling, quite the opposite in fact - I think it is helpful if they have different initials for example.
