Upper class sibsets

Thoughts?
Hugo and George
Sterling (spelled this way) and Montague

I see all the time on here people saying that the true upper class name their kids traditional names like William, James etc, but then see actual aristocracy with names like Peregrine (I.e. Viscount Peregrine Pearson) and wonder if we’re all wrong!

Disclaimer: all a bit of fun!

Mungo would have to be posh

FourStringsNoWaiting · 07/11/2023 10:20

DH went to boarding school with a Tuppence and a Fenella but beyond that they all had fairly normal names

I recall seeing a post asking for opinions on Araminta to which someone replied saying they'd assume Araminta was terribly posh, but I'd assume Araminta's parents were trying to seem posh whereas Lucy and Emily genuinely are posh. It's a thing.

There is a mix of handed down family names, Biblical names, poetic names and flamboyant names - just like other social groups, I imagine.

Though possibly fewer made up names like Nevaeh because, I assume, a higher level of education and spelling acumen .

Talkingtothecat247 · 07/11/2023 09:04

I like Jemima and Arabella.

FilthyRich · 07/11/2023 07:49

@Cressie2 , like Alfred, Albert, Sophia, Harvey, Frances, Victoria, Sadie, Louisa, Emily, Josh, ...

Cressie2 · 07/11/2023 07:35

@Sunflowers1999 you dont necessarily need to have a Peregrine or an Octavia, names like George, Charlie, Freddie can be just as public school.

They may have been referring to the sister, Nancy Mitford, who was born in London, not Unity Mitford @FilthyRich - her books will have a lot of names to choose from.

FilthyRich · 06/11/2023 22:28

Look up a few aristocrats and look at their names or their children's names. Their children tend to have completely normal names.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/11/2023 21:21

Other than Unity, the names aren't, though.

The Mitfords were about as upper class as you could get.

Nancy (and that was the name on her birth certificate)
Pamela, known as Pam
Thomas, known as Tom
Diana
Unity (middle name Valkyrie) - names chosen for patriotic reasons as she was born a few days after the start of World War One
Jessica, known as Decca
Deborah, known as Debo

They are all quite a long time dead though…

Ps yeah I've taught a couple of Hectors. But is that posh?? Maybe I've lost perspective lol.

It just reminds me of that song about how he was the first of the gang with a gun in his hand, the first to die etc

Dh vetoed the name for this reason lol

I hear that he stole from the rich and the poor and the not very rich and the very poor.

FilthyRich · 06/11/2023 18:32

Of course, but most of the announcements are probably from people who aren't aristocratic or upper class.

anonimoxyz · 06/11/2023 18:20

@FilthyRich not sure! I'm sure I saw the occasional titled couple in there back in the day

The poshest person I know - will one day inherit a title, ancient lineage including (ruined) castle, related to the Spencers (as in Diana) - is called...

... Ken.

Kenneth is surely a traditional Scottish name, good enough for kings and a saint?

gotomomo · 06/11/2023 17:42

Dp went to a pretty good public boarding school (one you would all know) and there were lots a James's, David's, Paul's, Peter, Matthew, William... basically biblical or Kings.

😆

I mean at least it's not quite Barry or similar.

StBrides · 06/11/2023 17:37

I like Carrington...

Whichwhatnow · 06/11/2023 17:36

Jago and Gaylord. Also Jocelyn for a boy. All very upper class men I've met (mostly with a title)

Mummymummy89 · 06/11/2023 17:33

Also have more than one Toby and Noah atm

I have worked in expensive fee-paying schools my whole career, and with a few exceptions, it's been names like Alex, Tom, Callum. Lots of Finns, Finbars and Finlays in recent years. Also Joshua, Will, Ben, Max etc.

The only unusual names I've ever had were from European families. I once taught a Seraphin (lovely boy). I've also taught quite a few Russian kids, often Boris and Nikolai.

I once overheard a family use the name Marmaduke on holiday. No indication that they were "classy" though.

SkaneTos · 06/11/2023 16:09

I read about a man called Clotworthy Upton. 1st Baron Templetown in the 18th century.

Possibly a difficult labour…? 😂

FilthyRich · 06/11/2023 17:26

@anonimoxyz , surely most of the birth announcements in the torygraph are from people with aspirations to be U.

Unity Mitford was born in Swastika in Ontario, Canada.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/11/2023 17:10

Some of the have a traditional forename but then a few, um, distinctive middle names and/or double (or more) barrelling.

It's not a case of all being wrong. Upper class people don't all choose the same kinds of names as each other, neither do all middle class people or all working class people. Plus some names are popular across the board.
