Family don't like baby's name

Shelly2706985 · 06/11/2023 09:05

Expecting baby boy in 3 weeks and we can't get a name, the only name me and hubby have agreed on is Casey, but every single person I tell screws up there face and say naw I don't like that it's a girl's name,
My other kids are Jake, Annabelle and Jamie.
I don't want to call him it if people are going to make fun of the name.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
VeridicalVagabond · 06/11/2023 11:14

Boys name for me too, also makes me think of Casey Jones the railroader who died saving a train full of people and was immortalised in song!

I like it.

AutumnCrow · 06/11/2023 11:08

The first three Caseys that came into my head were

Casey Jones (Steamin' and a Rolling')
Casey, Newt's little plastic doll from Aliens
Casey Novak the determined but flawed (blah de blah) ADA from Law and Order: SVU

Iconic, I'm tell you!

It may end up being adapted to 'K.C.' though as a nickname.

AmazingSnakeHead · 06/11/2023 11:07

Never ever ever tell people baby's name before they are here. Ever.

DirectionToPerfection · 06/11/2023 11:06

I agree that it doesn't fit with your other childrens names. Also to me it's predominantly a surname, then a girl's name.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 06/11/2023 11:05

Not sure I like Casey but it’s unisex. And if it’s your choice go for it.

Itsbecauseiamamumandlovethem · 06/11/2023 11:04

The name is very different from your other children’s names.

caringcarer · 06/11/2023 11:02

I only Casey I ever heard of was Casey Jones. I think he was a cowboy.

ComtesseDeSpair · 06/11/2023 11:02

I think there’s rude, unhelpful feedback (just saying the name is awful) and helpful feedback (informing you that it has negative connotations or is more commonly associated with the opposite sex.) I think Casey is a name like Taylor and Ashley, which used to be predominantly boys’ names but have become predominantly girls’ names. All the Caseys I know (US) are female - and they’re all over 35 so it’s not a very recent change. I like it, it’s SIL’s name, but I wouldn’t use it for a boy.

kittykitty007 · 06/11/2023 10:58

People can be so rude about names for a child. Best not to tell anyone until your bundle of joy is here 😊 xx

you should never share babies name with anyone until you announce their birth including name. Noone can say anything at that point...I would say nothing and ignore them. We all have different views on names and at the end of the day its your choice. However Casey is rather different from the other names - I am sure it is a popular name in America. But at the end of the day it is your choice.

We struggled with our 4ths name, went from Troy (dont ask), James to Luke, Kit, christopher, alexander and ended up Henry!!

Glad you settled on a lovely name!

Ididdiabetes · 06/11/2023 10:56

If you like it, stick with it. It immediately made me think Casey Affleck, so certainly a boys name.

Whalewatchers · 06/11/2023 10:56

Josh/Joshua goes well with Jake (Joshy for a cute nickname).

Whalewatchers · 06/11/2023 10:54

It's unisex. I neither particularly like nor dislike it. It certainly doesn't offended me.

You already have a Jaimie which which is another unisex name. Go with what you and your partner like.

InTheRainOnATrain · 06/11/2023 10:54

And this is why you don’t tell people the name before the baby is here. No one can object when a) it’s a done deal and b) it’s the announcement of an adorable newborn baby.

Casey = clearly unisex (Kacey, Kaci etc obviously female). If I’m being honest it’s not really my taste but it doesn’t have a weird meaning, sound ridiculous or anything like that so if you love it then use it. Just think of the confusion at nursery and school if we all liked the same names!

Kaci/Kacie/Kasey/Caissie is girl to me, Casey = boy.

I like it, reminds me of Yellowstone!

Names are funny things, I've got family or friends that have called their kids names most of us disliked but you get used to it. Announcing after birth is best as baby is here and their name is Casey, you aren't looking for opinions of if you can call them Casey.

The only name of a family member I still don't like and haven't gotten used to is one of those universally lauded MN names (like Persephone). To be fair, parents aside no one I've mentioned it too likes it but we would never say to the parents and no doubt MNers would say "what a beautiful name!!!" so...you can't please all the people all the time.

And there is NOTHING wrong with Casey.

pizzicato · 06/11/2023 10:48

Casey Jones...as soon as I heard that I was transported back in time and the song "Casey Jones….he was steamin’ and a rollin’ on the Canonball Express! " 😂Definitely a boy/man's name.

Slipknotted · 06/11/2023 10:46

Irrelevant what they think. I think it’s awful, but my opinion is just as irrelevant as your family’s. If you both like it, use it.

We knew my parents and DH’s would be horrified by DS’s unusual name (their tastes in names is basically ‘as long as it’s ordinary’), but it never occurred to us not to use it.

Gall10 · 06/11/2023 10:45

ThatAlbinoCat · 06/11/2023 10:13

I've only ever heard of one Casy, and that's Casey Batchelor (female). I think she's a small-time actress.

Casey Jones….he was steamin’ and a rollin’ on the Canonball Express!
Im a child of the 60’s.

Olika · 06/11/2023 10:42

I like it.

TheBirdintheCave · 06/11/2023 10:37

As it's a surname, I think the reactions will be because it doesn't match the names of your other children.

HolidaysPleaseNow · 06/11/2023 10:33

I know lots of girl Caseys. Think it depends where you live.

miniegg3 · 06/11/2023 10:27

It's unisex to me, there was a female casey at my school but I've seen it for boys a lot on American TV. I like it!

AllrightNowBaby · 06/11/2023 10:25

I don’t really like Casey and I think it doesn’t really match your other children’s names.
Jake, Annabelle, Jamie, Casey!?!??
What about Joshua (Josh)?

bratchlocks · 06/11/2023 10:24

It's a boys name for me too. I think it's nice and goes well with your other children.

Call your baby what you want, not what anyone else wants! Don't tell anyone anymore names you like.
