Family don't like baby's name

Expecting baby boy in 3 weeks and we can't get a name, the only name me and hubby have agreed on is Casey, but every single person I tell screws up there face and say naw I don't like that it's a girl's name,
My other kids are Jake, Annabelle and Jamie.
I don't want to call him it if people are going to make fun of the name.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It can be either a girl’s name or a boy’s.
Call your child the name you like, it’s not like you’ve chosen something stupid like Arse or Flanflinger or Sexdungeon.
If you’re relatives don’t like it they’re free to have their own kinds and name them as they choose!

How very dare you! My little Arsedungeon is very much adored by our whole family. Can’t ever find a bleddy cup with his name on though!

Gnomegnomegnome · 06/11/2023 17:35

Casey is definitely a boys name to me.
Kasey is a girls name.

NoHeavenNoMore · 06/11/2023 17:33

Our girl was going to be Casey. Or Deacon.
I love it xx

How did you get hold of my shortlist? 😠

HitsAndMrs · 06/11/2023 17:33

Boys name to me and it's lovely. It really doesn't matter what others think. I'd have loved a Boy Jesse! People hated it but I don't care.

Bristolnewcomer · 06/11/2023 17:32

I think it's fine for a boy or a girl, a bit like Ashley.

I also like Cary (as in Cary Grant) which has a similar sound.

Casey is the boy variant to me, Kacey for girls. Nothing wrong with a gender neutral name. Go with what you like.

Casey not impossible for a boy. Not really my style but here are some similar vibe boy names:

Clark
Chase
Charlton
Cain

Yes they are but they're not really a similar vibe to her other children's names. I think that's where her family are coming from. A pp who was ridiculed for suggesting Joshua was making the same point.

But they do become whatever name they end up with so it doesn't matter too much!

SDBM · 06/11/2023 17:08

I love Casey as a boys name but that’s probably because it’s my older brother’s name. He wasn’t bullied for it and no one has ever told him that it is strictly a girls name. Call your bubba whatever the hell you want.

The only Casey’s I know are boys. But also if you and your partner like it, it’s no one else's business! Some people in my family didn’t like my daughters name, I didn’t give a shite!
Congratulations btw x

CheshireCat1 · 06/11/2023 16:49

It’s a boys name, there used to be a TV series called Casey Jones about a railroad engineer, I think Johnny Cash sang the song as well. I like the name.

dontforgetme · 06/11/2023 16:45

I love it op. As it happens every one and their dog said something about my DD's name. I stuck with it and 10 years later still bloody love it.

Liv999 · 06/11/2023 16:45

It's a girls name to me but I know a three year old boy named Casey and it's kind of growing on me for a boy, it's your baby at the end of the day so called him whatever you want!

Gowlett · 06/11/2023 16:43

Casey is unisex. Nice name.

paulthepython · 06/11/2023 16:42

I only know it as a girls name. If you have a nagging doubt then I'd see if there's anything else you like. I do agree that once they are born anything just becomes their name...but that initial reaction you've had from family is definetely a litmus test of what will go through most people's minds, though hopefully most people will be polite enough to not let it show! I guess they were just being honest with you and how rude that is is dependent on your relationship with them. I'd be 100% comfortable with my mum, for example, criticising my name choices as we are quite real and genuine with each other, other peoples dynamics are different though as you can see from the comments 😁

BoyMamma2 · 06/11/2023 16:42

I would associate a Casey with a girl. It doesn’t really fit in with your other boys name for me. What about Jude?

if you really like Casey then stick to your guns. Your baby.

gemma19846 · 06/11/2023 16:30

Yep girls name. What about Corey?

JLou08 · 06/11/2023 15:00

My family didn't like the name I gave my little boy at first. It has grew on them now though and a couple have said they now like it

UsingChangeofName · 06/11/2023 14:31

As per the very first reply from @oldnorsesaga - this is why, once you've decided on a name, you don't discuss it with anyone else.

FWIW, it's not a name I would choose, but it's not an off the scale, ridiculous name either. If you announce it when the baby arrives, as fait accompli, then you are far less likely to get any comments.

Cropcycle · 06/11/2023 14:18

Well I would hope people wouldn’t make fun of your child’s name because that’s plain rude and disrespectful. If it was a really out there name like Tesla-Raygun, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for people to suggest you might want to re-think your choice, but Casey isn’t going to cause distress to your DS or hold him back in any way. If you and your DP are happy with the name, I’d stick to it.

AdoraBell · 06/11/2023 14:04

Your child, you choose the name. Your family have had their turn to name babies or will have their turn when they name their own babies.

2023aaa · 06/11/2023 14:01

To me, it’s a boys name but what we all think is irrelevant - as is your family’s opinion.

As is often said, they’ve had their turn naming a baby. This is yours. No-one else’s business.

For what it’s worth, I have a strong suspicion my mum will dislike the name we’ve picked, but it’s water off a duck’s back.

rainbowstardrops · 06/11/2023 13:57

I used to teach a male Cacey. Lovely lad. I've also taught female Kacies.
It's absolutely fine and most people, especially in a school, wouldn't bat an eyelid.
