Longer name for Ellie?

Husband loves Ellie for DD due in January. I have worked with children for a long time and have met many many Ellie’s so it doesn’t feel fresh and exciting to me and isn’t making my heart sing. I also like a longer name that has options which Ellie doesn’t. So I’m wondering if we can come up with a compromise and find a long name I love, which can sometimes be shortened to the name he loves.

I like Eloise and Eliana but I don’t think they’re quite right.

Does anyone have any suggestions of names that are feminine but strong and can be shortened to Ellie?

TIA

@Misspotterscat

Eleanor/Eleanora
Elizabeth/Elisabeth
Elouise/Eloise
Elaina/Elaine
Elissa/Elisa
Ellen/Elena
Elysian
Estelle/Estella (could be Essy or Elly or Ellie)

Also, just thought about Elspeth as another option.

Honestly anything that begins in “El” or has elle/ella in it can be shortened to Ellie. It’s a very common shortened form even here on MN (hence my name- there are a lot of us! 😂)

I know an Elara whose parents call her Ellie. Also Elise or Ellen, to name a few I didn’t see yet while skimming.

Never heard of Elara. That is very pretty.

Wow thank you so much to everyone for your suggestions! I’m going to sit and read through them all and see if any will work. I want him to love our daughters name, that’s important to me, so I’d really like to make this work. Thanks again 😊

Ellie-fant

My Grandad called me this as a small child or Ellie-Copter. I remember those nicknames fondly.

If you want strong and feminine then I think the best choices are Eleanor, Elizabeth or Helen/Ellen/Helena. You could let him use Ellie and everyone else use the full name, that makes Ellie his special Dad NN which is cool.

My Dad called me a name based on my middle name which no-one else used. I loved that, it made me feel really special.

There have been some beautiful names suggested here, but I think if you really want her to be Ellie, names like Annabelle aren't right. Those have other common shortenings, and she will spend her life being called other things by people who don't know her well. People tend to remember an obvious shortening, like Ellie for Eloise, but less so the ones that are more tenuous like Ellie for Gabrielle.

I love Elodie, Elise and Eloise.

I like Eloise, Elodie, Eleanora. These were all on my shortlist for if we had a girl (we've had two boys though).

We had Elsinore, Eleri, and Elspeth on our list. Dh liked Elise, it wasn't really to my taste though. I knew a Helle (pro. Helluh), which is quite nice.
