@PearlClutzsche, Alison is a french form of Alice, not Ali's son.

There isn't any spelling of a name that means son of that can make it a girl's name

Try telling that to every Alison, Allison and Alyson out there.
Not a man among them.Wink

@penjil
As a name for girls, it first became popular thanks to the character played by Darryl Hannah in the movie Splash, and also because it could be shortened to Maddie. The ancestors of President James Madison, after whom the many Madison Streets and Avenues and Boulevards of the US are named, were British. His great great grandfather, Isaac Madison, was born in London in 1590 and died in Virginia.

Theoldwoman · 07/11/2023 14:14

One D.

Madison.

penjil · 07/11/2023 11:51

It sounds very American.....

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 07/11/2023 10:25

I prefer 1 D but if shortened I prefer 2. Maddie rather than madie or even maddy rather than mady. But that my preference

user1492757084 · 07/11/2023 10:22

Madeleine or Magdalen are smarter still.

scottishGirl · 07/11/2023 09:48

Came back here to say, a FB friend of mine has very recently given birth and named her daughter Madison! I noted the one D for this thread 😂

Doveyouknow · 31/10/2023 19:52

I would assume it was Madison like the place / president (and strangely a corner shop near me). It's old fashioned enough that it's unlikely there will be another one in her class if that's the aim.

@BoleynMemories13 , but you are giving your opinion anonymously. You're no better.

Sure, me saying I think it's bad etiquette to be negative about a name someone hasn't asked for opinions on is just as bad as those making rude, unkind remarks about OP's name choice... 🙄

That's actually pretty laughable if you believe that.

It’s a name forum. You will get opinions on names as well as whatever you are asking. Tis the deal.

I think it's bad forum etiquette to give a negative opinion on a name when an opinion on the name itself is not being sought (and I say this as someone who is far from new to using baby name forums).

If someone asks what you think of a particular name it's fair game to be as honest as you like. If someone gives a list of names and asks for your favourite I think it's perfectly acceptable to be honest about the ones you don't like, to make your feedback as useful as possible. However, if someone has actually chosen a name and is asking for slightly different advice (spelling, middle name to match etc) then I think it's extremely rude to voice a negative opinion on the chosen name.

I'm sure some will disagree, as unfortunately some people enjoy using the anonymity of the internet as an excuse to be as rude as possible, but for me I steer clear of opinions on the name choice itself if an opinion is not being asked for.

PrudeyTwoShoes · 31/10/2023 10:30

Madison. I'm a teacher and taught a Madison last year - she was lovely. Maybe it's clouding my judgement of the name itself, but I like it! I definitely wouldn't let the comments about it being 'chavvy' (trailer trash) or not a nice name put you off, OP.

Pupsandturtles · 31/10/2023 10:29

^^ what’s @TheBirdintheCave said

name websites like Nameberry are mostly made up. Madisyn is not a Hebrew name and Maddison is not a German name. They’re all just modern derivations of the surname Madison.

I would go with one D.

MrsJPinkman · 31/10/2023 10:29

Maddison

When it's shortened to Maddie, it's spelt with 2 d's.

MerryChristmasToYou · 31/10/2023 10:27

Madisyn is awful

When the name Madison started becoming popular it was deemed to be the name of choice for families from a certain social demographic that also named their children Chanel, Paris, Mason etc.

The four letter word beginning with C and ending in V.

Ouch! I disagree but I do think it’s very American. Never met a British one but the 2 I know- one was the marketing director at work, the other would be about 9/10 now (older sibling of a boy in DD’s daycare class) and her mom was a paediatric surgeon. I have to say I prefer Madeleine/Madeline though which would probably end up as Maddy same as Madison.

Jewelspun · 31/10/2023 09:53

FourStringsNoWaiting · 31/10/2023 08:13

I didn't know there was another connotation @Jewelspun but I'm really curious now...

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 31/10/2023 08:57

I think Madison. It's the general accepted spelling in Western Europe and the second D adds nothing in terms of pronunciation or value.

TheBirdintheCave · 31/10/2023 08:53

@Monsteramagic As a name nerd, please don't trust that source. The random online ones are often for people who want to pretend there's a meaning behind their daft spellings or that it doesn't mean what it actually means. Madisyn is just a very poor spelling of Madison, there's no other origin to it.

Madison/Maddison is definitely 'son or Matthew'. I've also seen 'son of Maud' floated about though I personally feel that's unlikely as there are no other instances of son's being named after their mothers to my knowledge.

DaisyMaisyFaisy · 31/10/2023 08:39

Two Ds for me

Donkeyseason · 31/10/2023 08:33

It’s makes me think of the song, ‘walking down Madison, I swear I never had a gun, and I never shot anyone, we were only having fun’

Twoshoesnewshoes · 31/10/2023 08:31

Maddison
lovely name OP

HandbagMarinara · 31/10/2023 08:30

One D. Because saying double D isn't great.
