Does anyone else dislike these baby names? Albie, Willow, Chase, Cody, Cory, Talullah, Olive, Ivy, Elsie, Belle, Autumn, Summer, Teddy, Ronnie and Reggie? Bring back proper, solid names. Such as Hannah, Jane, Caroline and Kate!!!

I agree 100%

Lots of baby name threads where I don't anything cause I have nothing constructive to say cause the names are so bloody awful.

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/02/2024 10:46

@OnOtherPlanets , Grin.
I don't understand the trend of using names from other languages/cultures. They are usually dated in their original country, and the anglicised pronunciations sound far from pretty IMO (Amelie, Elodie, Orla, etc). If you start a thread asking for a [Named Nationality/Language] Names, you'll get a list of names used in the 1960s and 70s with only a few current baby names.

I don't like the surnames as first names thing either.

Echobelly · 09/02/2024 10:21

@Justleaveitblankthen - I don't especially like the 'surnames as first names' thing either

PoppingTomorrow · 09/02/2024 10:19

I don't really understand why anyone would call a child Tallulah or Cody, but clearly some people love those names. Each to their own.

I like Maureen and Eileen. Gobnait doesn't look or sound pretty to me, but I'm not Irish.

It’s not pretty to Irish people either (pron. ‘GUBB-net’), though Saint Gobnait was a cool fifth-century bee-keeping abbess who once drove off a cattle-rustler with a swarm of bees. I only know a child who has it as a middle name. In general it falls under the category of ‘names you would give to an eccentric octogenarian aunt in a story’.

As someone who was lumbered with the hideous name Judith, I don't think it's timeless.
I was the only one at school and the only times I have met another Judith, they have been at least forty years older than me

I really like the name Judith. I was at school with a very cool one, who would now be early 50s, and I used to work with a barking mad author of that name.

What’s not to love about having a Biblical namesake who save her city, honeytraps and then beheads an invading general?

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/02/2024 09:59

I like Maureen and Eileen. Gobnait doesn't look or sound pretty to me, but I'm not Irish.

Astridspuzzle · 08/02/2024 22:13

Gobnait. Irish girls' name (I'm Irish). I've just never taken to it.

thistimelastweek · 08/02/2024 22:08

Maureen

Fluorescentgem · 08/02/2024 21:56

I ike the ones you mentioned. Not keen on Hannah somehow, but I'm not sure why.

MerryChristmasToYou · 08/02/2024 14:04

@MrsHGWells , You've misspelt Mabel, Genevieve and Briony/Bryony. The misspellings are ugly.

The following is my opinion, others might not agree:
Margot looks ugly but Margaux is worse.
Meghan is ugly but Megan isn't
Darcey looks and sounds ugly.
Dulcie is ugly - sounds and looks like Dull.
CeCe is popular on here. I think it's awful.
Sylvia looks and sounds ugly.
Meredith is horrible, both in sound and look, but it's OK as a surname.
Ava looks ok but I don't like the sound - Ai-vuh
I like Eve but not Eva.
I don't like Clara said as Clar-a but it's ok as Clair-a
Lyra doesn't appeal at all but Lara is fine.

Too babyish: Albie, Teddy, Belle
Too American: Chase, Cody, Cory, Tallulah
Too naturey: Autumn, Summer, Willow
Too old lady: Olive, Ivy, Elsie
OK: Ronnie and Reggie
Fine: Hannah, Jane, Caroline and Kate

Most names are OK in isolation. When they become overused or samey they lose their appeal.

Toomuchgoingon79 · 08/02/2024 06:42

Margot, Elsie, ivy, Clara, Elizabeth, Caroline, Christina, Victoria and so on we're all 'Fashionable names when they first came along, someone had to make them up at some point.

Veggie1961 · 08/02/2024 00:22

It’s just about personal taste. All these names do not change the human being that these people will be!

miniaturepixieonacid · 08/02/2024 00:17

Albie - not sure. Quite like it as a niconsme for Albert.
Willow - like it. But I wouldn't use it in case the child wasn't willowy. I think it woukd be embarrassing to be a short, stout Willow.
Chase - not keen
Cody - quite like it but so American. Not sure a British child could pull it off.
Cory - quite like it.
Talullah - like it. Quite posh, imo.
Olive - really don't like this.
Ivy - love it. One of my favourite names. Elsie - it's ok.
Belle - quite like it but wouldn't use it in case the child wasn't beautiful. I'd hate to be a plain Belle.
Autumn - quite like it.
Summer - like it.
Teddy - like it as a nickname for Edward but not a name in its own right.
Ronnie - not keen. Old man with a flat cap.
Reggie - really not keen. Sounds like Ronnie's even more Victorian chimney sweep twin.
Hannah - love it. Another of my favourite names.
Jane - not keen. The ultimate middle name. Too boring for a first name.
Caroline - not keen
Kate - quite like it. Much prefer Katie/Katy

Enko · 07/02/2024 23:59

I prefer the names you want rid of to those you want in.

I cant stand Connor Callum or "aiden" names (Braiden, Caiden etc)
Dislike Olivia and Jessica. Feel names like Anna and Jane are just dull dullness

Preferred it when my friend named her dd Gertrude to the friend that went with Ellie Mae.

MrsHGWells · 07/02/2024 21:21

a gorgeous old fashioned Elsie, Mable, Gennieve & Caroline.. all simple classic names.

Brioney, Sarah, Kate and Claire all feel English ho hum ..
you will find a name that you will
adore.

YourLocal · 07/02/2024 21:05

Reggie, Cory and Tallulah kill me ! I just named my kids names you hear a quite a bit of contrasting with others! Some parents really need to stop calling their kids brands and things they like such as Dior!

Saschka · 31/10/2023 19:30

Hannah, Jane and Caroline are dreary and sound like the grumpy, obstructive older admin assistant who treats every aspect of her role as a massive imposition, like somebody has asked her to donate them her liver instead of just asking her to order more printer paper. Elsie and Ivy are fine in comparison.

OP, you seem to have just picked a random selection of names you don’t like. I could also pick a random selection of names I don’t like, but it doesn’t mean anything about Parents Today.

DramaAlpaca · 31/10/2023 19:23

I like Olive and Ivy but otherwise I'm with the OP. I can't bear cutesy names. I like Kate, Jane and Caroline.

SayingwhatIreallythink · 31/10/2023 19:19

Love Elsie, loathe Jane and Caroline.
completely with you on ice though, despite the love for it on here.

catin8oots · 31/10/2023 19:17

bryoni

ItsFreeOnFriday · 31/10/2023 19:15

I love the name teddy. I hate the name Margot and hope so much it’s time is over. Mind you that might be because there is a very shouty mum at the dcs school who is always screeching at her perfectly sweet child MARGOT!!!

WakyWally · 31/10/2023 18:59

Its only abit of something to talk about, thats all. Im only thinking from when the kid starts school and becomes an adult.

OP posts:
MidnightMeltdown · 30/10/2023 15:17

I hate the names Hannah and Kate! I was a child of the 80s/90s and every other female was called Katie!

Imnotafraid2walkalone · 30/10/2023 12:48

Each to their own. I dont personally like my nephews name but who am i to decide if a name is tasteful etc for another person.
Alot of people don't like what I've named my children but me and the hubby do so we're happy.
I've got-
Jack, Sean, Kyle, Thomas, David, Arthur and Halle..... yes I have 7 kids 🤣
