Abbey, Abby or Abbie

Which one is better?
Btw this will be their full name rather than a nickname for Abigail

*Other options include: Abelone...?

Abelone?? That's a type of sea snail!

Apparently the Danish form of Apollonia

Sugarfree23 · 01/11/2023 01:23

@ReviewingTheSituation I think you make a good point about the full name.

Two boys I went to school with later changed to a different version of their name Jamie to Jim although both officially James. I can only assume they drove the change. And I know an Andrew who became Andy as he got older.
I don't know as many girls who amended their name.

Abbie. I would put Abigail on BC though. Or Gabriella.

Abbie.

And I think if you don’t want to put the full name Abigail on the BC, it’s perfectly fine. Everyone on here always goes on about “give them the full name and then they have a choice when they’re older.” They have a choice when they’re older anyway, they can call themselves whatever the heck they like, Bob, Burt, Barry, Beryl … regardless of whether they’ve officially got the name on a BC.

Whilst you can technically choose any long form/'grown up' name you like, it's much easier to use the one on your birth certificate. And that isn't entirely alien.

It was a very easy transition for me to start using my full name, and not incongruent to the people I knew. If I'd said I suddenly wanted to be called Beryl (or other 'grown up' name) it would have been a harder transition (for other people and me).

As a shortening for Abigail I would spell it Abi or Abbie but I think if you are using it as a stand alone name I would go for Abby.

Would Abi be pronounced "ay-bee", like ABC?

Abbie is the most usable

I'm with you Abi should technically be pronounced like the start of Ape. It needs the double b to keep the Apple sound. That said Abigail only has one b, but could it be a name which doesn't have its roots in English?

Abbie I think looks slightly better to me but if they are arty they might like the y to make fancy.

Write them in various fonts with your surname and see which looks better.

HarryBlackberry1 · 30/10/2023 08:52

I have an Abby. Lovely.

Abbie.

As others have said, Abbey is a word, and Abi looks shortened.

I had an Abbie in my class at school (and an 'Abi' that was Abigail), she had an argument with one of our teachers who kept calling her Abigail. Totally forgot about that memory until I read this thread!

No, it would be pronounced like the start of Abigail, which it is short for. (The same as abbey, but as many people have pointed out, that's a building not a name).

amylou8 · 30/10/2023 08:32

I have an Abigail that's always been Abby.

Abbie

Jewelspun · 30/10/2023 08:27

Not Abbey.

floatingnoodle · 30/10/2023 08:21

Abbie. Abbey makes me think it autocorrected and you didn’t know abbey is a word.

WaltzingWaters · 30/10/2023 08:03

I’d go against the grain here and say Abbey. But then my oldest friend is Abbey spelt this way so I’m used to it as a name.

Abby doesn’t look right or nice imo. If not Abbey I’d say Abbie.

ReviewingTheSituation · 30/10/2023 07:59

Give her the long form name and just use the short version from the get go.

I have a 'proper' name on my BC, but was known as the short form from birth. As an adult, I was very glad to have the choice and have used my full name for 25 years now.
My parents, and people I know from my childhood, still use the short version (and it would be very odd to hear them using the long version), but I much prefer the full version and am very glad to have the choice.

nobleisle · 30/10/2023 07:54

Abbie

user1492757084 · 30/10/2023 02:11

Abbie is sweet and smart.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 29/10/2023 21:52

I'd go with Abigail (and Abi) to give her options, but if you're adamant you don't want to then Abby.

Abi doesn't feel like a proper name
you can't land her with Abbey

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/10/2023 21:50

Not Abbey.

Theoldwoman · 29/10/2023 21:48

Please think about Abigail. Heard too many Scabby Abby’s over the years.

I prefer Abbie.

Pemba · 29/10/2023 12:12

Abbie is very sweet, definitely not Abbey, as it's a building!

But what's wrong with Abigail as the full name? Great name.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 29/10/2023 09:58

Thought you were going to call her Which for a moment.

Abbie or Abi, but personally I’d give her Abigail so she has the option. Abbey will just make you look stupid.
