This is a slightly unconventional name but im a big fan and I think it is very cool and also unisex. Thoughts?

Callisto - ending in 'o', like several other Greek female names eg Hero, Calypso, Myrto - is a name from ancient Greek myth:

Callista is a later, Latin, name, based on the ancient Greek word for beautiful. It's the female version of the Latin male name Callistus (also spelled Calixtus), incidentally the name of three popes.

Callisto | Nymph, Jupiter, Arcadia

Callisto, in Greek mythology, a nymph, or else a daughter of either Lycaon of Arcadia or of Nycteus or Ceteus. Callisto was one of the goddess Artemis’ huntress companions and swore to remain unwed. But she was loved by Zeus and, in several variations...

I like a lot of ‘o’ ending female names like Callisto, and don’t mind unisex names in principle. But Padro is harsh-sounding to my ear and too much like Pedro.

It's Callista.

Hmm, i quite like it. If I met a woman called Padro I would assume she was arty and metropolitan.

I'll admit It does make me think of Padron Peppers, but I expect they'll be out of fashion in a few years anyway.

Strange assumption, given that we don't name ourselves...
It does say something about her parents though and its not that they're arty and cosmopolitan

Sweenten · 26/10/2023 23:34

Isn't the difference between Cleo and Padro that Cleo is a Greek origin name where there is no association with an "o" ending being male, whereas Padro sounds (is?) very Spanish, hence sounding male?

Dillane · 26/10/2023 23:24

Awful, she might eventually get ‘paedo’ at school.

s3tut0y3r · 26/10/2023 23:23

How about Petra or Pietra - the latter if you are Italian.

Or Pearl?

Please tell us what you decide

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 26/10/2023 20:25

No.

daisychain01 · 26/10/2023 20:23

You'd really have to hate your child giving it a name like that. Of all the thousands of possibilities, Padro. Nnnnnope.

the OP has abandoned their thread and run for the hills.

TheaBrandt · 26/10/2023 16:54

But what if the poor kid is not arty and metropolitan?! That’s why the majority of us dont go for extreme names you have no idea what your child will end up like.

Dd2 is utterly confident glamorous party girl and would rock any name however mental because she is the most popular teen in town.

Dd1 is low key, quiet, hates drawing attention to herself and has a small lovely group of loyal friends. She would detest a wacky name.

I fully endorse originality and avoiding Eve/Isabel /Grace tedium but there is a middle ground!

Sunset6 · 26/10/2023 15:35

You might as well call her Pardon, because that’s what people will say every time she introduces herself throughout her life

All2Well · 26/10/2023 15:11

Oh this is AWFUL. Poor girl. Why would you saddle a daughter with such a hideous name?! And yes "Pad" as a nick name.

ITriedToStopSwearingButICunt · 26/10/2023 15:09

(for those of you who have seen Napoleon Dynamite!)

ITriedToStopSwearingButICunt · 26/10/2023 15:07

Vote for Padro!

DawnieOwl · 23/10/2023 22:43

I assume you think Cleo is a male name too?

No, no one does, because it isn’t.

StoatofDisarray · 26/10/2023 08:37

EveSix · 26/10/2023 06:21

MrsTerryPratchett, spot on.

Might also be saddled with monosyllabic nickname Pad.

And her nickname will be Sanitary.

Olika · 26/10/2023 05:57

I have been repeating the name quite a few times now and I still find it hideous.

MariaVT65 · 26/10/2023 05:47

People will misread it as Pedro. Plus as others have said, the ‘PAD’ indicates ‘father’ in other languages, so wouldn’t describe it as unisex.

Cleo is quite a well-known female name

TheaBrandt · 26/10/2023 05:28

She’ll likely change it as soon as she’s able to do so. If you do pick it at least give her a lovely middle name she can actually use.

MysteryBelle · 26/10/2023 04:11

alrighthen · 23/10/2023 22:57

I actually like it because it doesn’t have ‘a’ ending and it doesn’t disappear into a sea of vowel heavy nothingness with Ada, Isla and Isabella. To my ear it sounds strong, cool and modern.

LOL yeah sure whatever 😂

MysteryBelle · 26/10/2023 04:08

Hideous. I mean, come on, it’s ridiculous.

user1477391263 · 26/10/2023 03:30

She will spend her life saying “No, not Pedro. PADRO. P-A-D-R-O”…. As if Pedro wasn’t bad enough! It makes me imagine a weather-beaten Spanish farmer with a big moustache.

There are about a million nice girl’s names that aren’t full of vowels and don’t end in “a” and aren’t Padro (which my laptop just autocorrected to Pedro - says it all!).

NotAscoob · 26/10/2023 03:06

Hideous
