Hyphenated first names?

Sunmoonstars33 · 20/10/2023 16:50

My DH chose the name for our baby who is due in 3 months. Its a name that has a lot of meaning to him and as I basically chose the names of our last two children (we agreed on them together and he likes them its just they were suggested by me) I think I want to use his chosen name for this child. However this name is only two letters.
The name is Io (eye oh) as in one of Jupiter's moons. My husband loves anything to do with space.
I just feel like Io is very short so I was considering hyphenating it with another more traditional name to make it longer?
I wondered what peoples thoughts were about this.... the name we would use is Celeste. So it would be Io-Celeste.
I've never actually met anyone with a double first name but I know they are common, lily Rose, Anne Marie, Lisa Marie, etc
Interested to hear peoples thoughts

@LaurieStrode @LeonBlack - Moon Unit is not a name.it’s made up and it’s bonkers. Io is a name, fairly unusual but very much a classical name. You can’t conflate the two.

Snowdropcow · 28/10/2023 23:05

Io Estella is just beautiful

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/10/2023 18:21

Iona
Iolanthe
Ione ?

user1492757084 · 24/10/2023 23:55

Io on it's own is better than Io-Celeste.
I would never hyphenate the two as it detracts from Io.
People will take only a small while to get used to Io.
To have to also rememeber the - and the Celeste is too fussy.

I would partner the name with an appropriate second name..
Io Phoebe
Io Celeste
Io Cosima
Io Iona
Io Estella

Celeste is nice but Io is ridiculous and cruel and subjects your child to a lifetime of 'what?' 'How do you spell / say it?' 'Huh?' / confused looks. It looks like a typo. Hardly fair on a child.

This. There are lots of other perfectly good names suggested on this thread that have the same theme.

Ilikeyourdecor · 24/10/2023 20:50

I love Io

I also love Io Celeste and think it flows well. But I do think if you have agreed to give your DH his choice, it should really be his choice. Otherwise might as well use Iolanthe etc.

I love Greek names.

It smacks of Moon-Unit.

Don't do it to the poor child.

I ws thinking Moon Unit too.

Danielle9891 · 24/10/2023 20:36

Reading Io people might call her Loo or Low. Thinking the I is L. What about using it for a middle name so she doesn't have to constantly correct people. It does sound like some z list celeb trying to name their kid to get more publicity.
Just saying Eye-oh-celeste then a surname is such a long name. People might also mistake them as initials.

Rantypanties · 24/10/2023 20:18

Sounds like the start of a sea shanty 🤷‍♀️

When she’s old enough for you to shout up the stairs to let her know dinner’s ready you can say her name in a Freddie Mercury style….!

Myhusbandearns150k · 24/10/2023 20:09

I like Io it’s cool and bold and can stand on its own. Much less cool after tagging Celeste on, and I love Celeste.

Notsureofaname · 23/10/2023 14:19

Do you pronounce it ‘i o’ like 2 separate letters? It a bit Grimes / Elon Muskish

peaceinourtime · 23/10/2023 14:09

Don’t do it, it sounds stupid

Daphnis156 · 22/10/2023 16:37

It does not go with Celeste.

I wonder if she'll change it when she grows up?

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 22/10/2023 13:07

@LylaLee I didn't say it was ignorant to not like a name. I inferred that people's ignorance can make people not like a name if it's unfamiliar to them. I know very well the story of Io. And Persephone for that matter. I studied classics. Many names have negative connotations but are still used. Claudia means 'lame' but it is still used and is often suggested on this board.

skyeisthelimit · 22/10/2023 12:12

Io is such an unusual name that I wouldn't hyphenate it as it takes away from the name itself. Although I did think it was Lo when I first read it Grin

Call her Io Celeste which sounds great, but don't hyphenate it.

@Sunmoonstars33 I think Io is a beautiful name. Am I right that you're a Greek family? If so, the Greek families I know have wonderful names, using many from ancient mythology. I know a Persephone, an Artemis, a Herakles, a Nefeli and an Athene.

People often show their ignorance and I'm so glad you're ignoring them. I agree that Io as a standalone name will be elegant and simple, with Celeste as a pretty middle name. Job done!

It's not ignorant not to like a name. And if you grew up knowing the classics and about what happened to Io, you might have an instinctive dislike of the name.

The nature of such spaces is that tangential issues are also up for discussion.

I'm not questioning anyone's right to discuss tangential issues. I'm responding to your specific assertion that people are doing "just as OP asked".

I've made the same point a number of times now and you have (deliberately?) missed it each time, so I'm not sure whether it's worth pursuing this further. Enjoy your day.

"Which spelling do you like. Beau or Boo." Invites discussion about the choice of name.

"Should I go on the cabbage diet, or the cauliflower diet?" Invites discussion on the efficacy of such diets.

Yes, you've made the same point. That you're the thread police who gets to decide what is allowed to be discussed and what's not.

What OP actually asked- “I just feel like Io is very short so I was considering hyphenating it with another more traditional name to make it longer?
I wondered what peoples thoughts were about this.”

Of course you can say that people are entitled to comment on the name Io as well- they are. But don’t pretend they’re doing “just as OP asked”.

"I want to call my child Pendragon-Beelzebum. Is it too long hyphenated?"

Does that mean you should say, "the hyphenation is fine/not fine" and nothing more? Obviously the example is hyperbole, but some people find the name OP suggested also gives them a visceral reaction, and they are allowed to say so.

No one sought out OP. They came to a PUBLIC FORUM. The nature of such spaces is that tangential issues are also up for discussion.

If someone says 'do you like the pineapple smoothie or the kale one?', it is a valid response to say that one likes neither.

My grandmother was called Iolanda - Italian version of Yolanda. Could this be an option rather than double barrelled?

HighlighterPenPot · 22/10/2023 09:05

She didn’t ask for anyone’s opinion on the name Io.

Honest opinions- fine. Accusing her of “borderline child cruelty” etc- not fine and quite dickish.

Edited

OP says her ds loves HIS weird name, there's a doctor somewhere called Io, and the name was 'given in love' so the child won't resent it and everything will be fine ...

The Dad has an unusual middle name. So it's nor a name he had to go through school with everyone knowing it. Her friends only found out at their wedding. It might be a name that's odd but not easy to be mocked like Saturn or Moon

They could give the child io as a middle name or use it as initials. Just too many ways for io to be mocked.
Old Mcdonald, Seven Dwarfs & an operating system. Poor kid!
