personally love it for girl or boy but DH on the fence

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
FoleyHuck · 17/10/2023 14:38

If you live in the place it's common and not chavvy (eg. Spain) then fine, but if you don't then you need to consider reaction to it where you do live.

DH is Swedish so we may pick a Swedish name but since we live in the UK and that's where our baby will at least start life, we probably wouldn't choose Vanentin or Gustava.

All these parents that want something different for their children because the parent wants to feel special don't give a dam or thought about the ridicule that they put their children through, just why?

gotomomo · 17/10/2023 14:23

How about Gabriel nicknamed angel? Gives him the option to go by Gabe, a more common male name in English

Sp1ke3 · 17/10/2023 13:56

No, Angel Clare is one of the vilest creatures in English literature and has ruined the name forever (and he moved on to her little sister after poor Tess!)

Iheartpizza · 17/10/2023 13:44

It's bad enough on a girl. No way should you use it for a boy.

Why a latino pimp? It's a perfectly normal name in Spanish speaking countries
Why not a latino civil servant, GP or navy officer?

Well, it's a common Latino gangster name in films. Bit like Tony in Italian American mafioso. Doesn't mean there aren't loads of normal Tonies.

LadyTrunchbull · 17/10/2023 09:51

Not unless he's a latino pimp. 😂😂😂

If you're a Spanish speaking family ok but wouldn't it be Ángel? I would not suggest Angel, pronounced the English way, for a British lad. Gabriel or Michael instead?

Call your kid anything you like in theory but some names just don't work as well in some countries and he's the one stuck with it.

The Spanish version absolutely doesn't remotely sound like 'anal' ffs. None of the vowels match.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/10/2023 09:57

Angel Clare. Utter bastard who did for Tess. Poor poor Tess 😰

FeelSoDown · 17/10/2023 09:57

'Ann hell' sounds way too much like anal. Imagine when he's a teen 😔

CurlewKate · 17/10/2023 09:53

Absolutely fine. If it's OK to call girls Rory and James it's obviously OK to call a boy Angel.

LadyTrunchbull · 17/10/2023 09:51

caringcarer · 17/10/2023 09:50

In the UK Angel is a girl's name. Angelo is for boys.

3luckystars · 17/10/2023 09:04

@StrikesFutureWife

so it’s pronounced Angle?

No, not remotely. The ‘g’ is a little like the Scouse pronunciation of ‘ck’ in the throat, or the ‘ch’ at the end of ‘loch’. If you can’t manage that, say ‘Ann-HELL’, but that’s not really it.

BoohooWoohoo · 17/10/2023 09:27

Are you in the UK?
If you're in a Spanish speaking country then it's fine but in the UK I think it gives stripper vibes like the name Honey. I would name a boy Angelo rather than Angel if you're in the UK.

StrikesFutureWife · 17/10/2023 09:25

3luckystars · 17/10/2023 09:04

@StrikesFutureWife

so it’s pronounced Angle?

Not quite, the end would be more like elle said the way Michelle would be. And for a Spaniard they'd managed the g in the middle slightly differently which would almost have an h in it. Hard to describe in words.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 17/10/2023 09:22

It’s not ignorant to not like a name…

Princesspollyyy · 17/10/2023 09:14

No.

SummaLuvin · 17/10/2023 09:13

It's remarkable how openly ignorant so many MN posters are, Angel isn't even an unusual or niche Spanish name. It's no wonder so many bleat about bullying risk when they hold this attitude to any names other than the likes of Matthew, David, and George. I do hope they're not raising their children to be so judgemental...

3luckystars · 17/10/2023 09:04

@StrikesFutureWife

so it’s pronounced Angle?

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/10/2023 08:38

Oh dear. Don't.

StrikesFutureWife · 17/10/2023 08:33

Sadly OP I don't think the question was ever going to get a fair trial here because many if not most respondents won't be aware that the male pronunciation of Angel is different to the female Angel that sits on the tree at Christmas.

When pronounced Ang (as in hang) Gel (as in posh accent version of girl ie hard G sound) then it's a really strong name. And although likely most UK based people would say it the female way first time, after being told it'd be no issue. Depends if you want the faff of the correcting people for years to come.

Somewhatchallenging · 17/10/2023 08:27

I’m a bit surprised by these replies. I think it’s fine, but I live in London, and there are all sorts of names. I also see it more as a male name than a female one. Aren’t angels male? Angelo might be easier in the UK. Can’t you use the actual name from your home country, not the anglicised version?

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 17/10/2023 08:26

No. Angelo might be nice, though.

MartyFunkhouser · 17/10/2023 08:26

I don’t think many will think you’re a Hardy fan. They’ll just think it a bloody awful, naff name to saddle a child with.
