Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Buffy the vampire slayer theme music being sang out everywhere he goes xD

I've never understood choosing names before a kid is born. I mean you don't name your pets before you've even picked one out.You meet the animal first...get to know it. I'd understand maybe having like a list of 10 'I like these names' that you hope might suit but... surely you don't know until you meet the child.

He might not look like an 'angel'. He might look like a 'Damon' lol.

TerribleWoman · 24/10/2023 08:54

Surely, if your partner says no, it's a no?
Isn't naming babies about finding a name you both are happy enough with?
Let's say he really wanted to call the baby Barry or Clint. He really really loves those names. Doesn't matter - if you dislike them and say no, you go back to the drawing board.

Find a name you both like, then add a middle name each if you want to be "fair". Then DS can be

Daniel Barry Angel Smith. Or similar.

@jannier as in it’s the English-y version (no accent or Os) and it’s not difficult to pronounce in English or difficult to read. It’s an English word and British children are also called that name, while still being a connection to a traditional name.

seemed like the best of both worlds but obviously not according to most on the thread 😂

But it's an English name for girls and a foreign name for boys so would look foreign anyway.

Squirrelsbite · 24/10/2023 07:06

It may be cute for a baby but think about when he’s a young teenager, older teen, adult at uni and or job could you lumber him with being called Angel ?
even if you pronounce it an-gel like the footballer
just no

Fine if you live in Spain, not so fine if you live in Swindon.

jannier · 23/10/2023 22:55

I'm struggling to understand why on one hand you say you don't want a foreign sounding name but then say Angel is a traditional name in your home country....as it's not traditional here for a boy doesn't that make it foreign sounding?

Sconehenge · 23/10/2023 16:28

Why not Angelo?

SemperIdem · 22/10/2023 00:01

Biblically, all Angels were male 🤷🏻‍♀️

Angel makes me think of David Boreanez of Buffy/Angel fame.

It’s a fairly common shortening of Angelo/Angelos in Spanish speaking countries.

Never met a female Angel, so for the above reasons, I think of it as a male name.

Wow surprised at the replies.

I did wonder how it would be received in the UK bit at the same time I also don’t want the child to be seen as “foreign” straight away because they have a name that’s not English or easy to say.

not worried about the bullying thing, if you are going to be bullied kids will find anything how you look, how you speak etc… not just a name. I think most kids don’t care about names do they? They just know the person as that name and that’s it. Who is teaching their kids to judge someone on a name?

Hmmm, I'm not so sure. We had a lad at school with the surname Bates and the 'Master Bates' jokes were endless.

Also a lad named Phillip Ness. When they read 'P. Ness' during register hilarity would always ensue.

Seashor · 21/10/2023 21:45

I have a male cousin with this name but he is Spanish, it’s pronounced An c el.

SquishingWell · 21/10/2023 20:11

Angelo is quite nice, I agree, but Italian I think and we don’t have any remote Italian connection.

Our other options similar would be Ángel or Angelos really. But again I didn’t really want something that screams “foreign” straight away in the UK? That was my thinking behind using a version that also sounds more English.

although our surname is a typical British and an obviously non British name double barrelled so perhaps they will get the “where is that name from” questions anyway

I'd prefer something sounding foreign than feminine leaving him a target for bullying

I like it and don't find it chavvy.

I automatically think Boy actually. Because of Angel Clare, Angel from Rent and the vampire!

I prefer Angelo and Angela though.

flutterby1 · 21/10/2023 18:08

It depends, if he's growing up in the UK you will have to consider the reception to the name by the people who he will interact with here, at the end of the day I think you have your mind made up, that's great go with it , sounds like you don't need other opinions. ( not sure why you asked for reactions ?) but just go for it x

SquishingWell · 21/10/2023 15:11

@flutterby1 well yes as I said previously, where my maternal family are from it’s quite common and old fashioned.

Angel for a MAN ?

Well, yes. Angels are always referred to as male in any Bible or Scripture. The word angel is from the Greek word and uses the masculine form in grammar. There is no feminine form.

A “Stripper” name really 🙄 only if you act like one?

No, it is the type of name strippers adopt (no harm to them, it’s just to help with a vibe) Heavenly, Harmony, Bliss being others.

I realise in (some) Catholic countries it has quite different associations. But in the UK.. g string.

wildwestpioneer · 19/10/2023 15:17

Buffy the vampire slayer is all I ca. think of

Just no

realitychequer · 19/10/2023 14:58

Doesn't work in the Uk I think. Like the name Jesus. Font a good UK first name

redribbonrose · 19/10/2023 14:51

Crumbs! No

Angelo is ok

whatausername · 19/10/2023 14:48

It's not a name that inspires confidence. Unless they were obv Latino, I'd, unintentionally, presume the parents prioritised cute, pretty and other vain qualities above others and as such a doctor, pilot, paramedic, police officer, fire crew, military officer etc who introduced themselves as Angel would not have my immediate confidence. It could be earned eventually but my kneejerk reaction would be a lack of faith in their authority (in the wider sense of the word). It's wrong but then many wrongs exist in life.

Also, I would guess that, with such a name, any normal less than angelic quality (lack of grace or charm, poor behaviour, unkindness) would stand out twice as much as in others. It would be an unconscious thing people couldn't help but notice.

It's less what the name says about your child and more what it says about the parents. And given the parents are the greatest influence on a child people will taint one with the other. Rightly or wrongly.

FreeCoathangers · 19/10/2023 14:14

How about Alan? It's got some of the letters.

I will happily take “oh I don’t really like it, a bit too unusual, husband not being uptight” etc…

but some people are just snobby and rude 😂

You asked for opinions, it's very silly in my opinion. Your baby will be a man one day with his own character and personality would be pretty daft to name him Angel.
