I prefer Aksel... what do you say?

We love the name Aksel/Axel and the reason why I prefer Aksel is due to the more Danish way of spelling it. I also think it looks neater beside our other two boys -

Finn, Lucas and Aksel
Finn, Lucas and Axel

What do you say? Another name we love is Matthias or Emil.

I've always pronounced Matthias as Matt-eye-as. Never heard it with the tay sound before.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 07/10/2023 22:24

I much prefer Matthias.
Otherwise Axel.

Finlesswonder · 07/10/2023 20:32

For me it would be Matt Tee Ass

I like it

mumtotwox · 07/10/2023 18:31

@ImDoingThisNow That's exactly it... I think all three names are going to be spelt/said differently by many. Gosh it's hard isn't it 😂

@ImDoingThisNow For us it would be "mah tee us"

Same for me. I was just wondering whether it was the same for everyone. They Amy not realise that there are different pronunciations (comparing it to the conversation about the other names).

I still like them all and think you should go with the one you love.

ImDoingThisNow · 07/10/2023 17:45

How are you all pronouncing Matthias?

mumtotwox · 07/10/2023 13:27

Thanks again everyone! Really appreciate the comments and love for the other names. Food for thought 💙

I’d go for Matthias - great name

The Danish spelling or Axel will be annoying for him his whole life, but the English spelling makes me think of guns and roses.. it’s quite of the moment but I am not a fan.

Clemally · 07/10/2023 09:59

I would pronounce Akhsel Ahk- sel rather than Axe-uhl and then I’d question my entire existence and refer to him as “the baby” or “your son” out of embarrassment for the next 20 years but then I am very socially awkward.

Kiswahili · 07/10/2023 09:55

Axel

martinisforeveryone · 07/10/2023 09:51

Personally I much prefer Matthias. Easier for a person to live with, a really good strong name and fits well with his siblings.

Finlesswonder · 07/10/2023 00:38

But tbh either way I don't like the sound. It sounds like a machine

Finlesswonder · 07/10/2023 00:37

I think Axel looks cleaner, aksel looks clumsy and the Danish link is tenuous

Zonder · 07/10/2023 00:32

Go with Aksel and celebrate the inner Dane.

You won't be forever correcting people. You will tell people the name and how to spell it and they should get on with that. Some will make mistakes but that happens with loads of names. Isobel/Isabel/Isabelle anyone?

RaeHitsEbSire · 07/10/2023 00:26

I prefer Axel but I don't have Danish heritage.

Enko · 07/10/2023 00:19

As a fellow Dane I much prefer Aksel. Axel to me looks wrong

I do love Emil though. Esp Emil fra Lønebjerg

Rugbee · 07/10/2023 00:13

Matthias is a strong name and goes well with your other kids names

AlltheFs · 07/10/2023 00:13

Matthias is much nicer and a better fit with sibling names.
Aksel is a bit harsher sounding. I don’t like Axel though.
But other posters are right, Aksel will never be spelt right.

HoratioNightboy · 07/10/2023 00:07

As you're in Scotland, I feel duty-bound to inform you that the name was also used in the Northern Isles from the 18th century with the most common spelling being Axwell (silent 'w') followed by Axil. Once the name travelled to other parts of Scotland, Axel became the most commonly-used spelling, with the occasional Axal.

Wherever you live, I think anything other than "Axel" may be deemed "unique" so just go for whatever spelling you prefer, OP - it's a terrific name!

ImDoingThisNow · 06/10/2023 18:40

Emil can have different pronunciations - annoying if it’s the wrong one to the one you want.

I would say that Axel and Aksel do have different pronunciations- which one do you want to go with?

Matthias is a great name, but you'll get lots of different pronunciations.

I would say this goes for most, but for the most obvious names. British (English?) people are notoriously bad for getting names right - pronunciation/ spelling/ shortening without asking.

I'm basically saying, choose what you want and others will have to go with it.

AdaColeman · 06/10/2023 18:18

As you live in Scotland and your child's life admin will be UK based I'd use the Axel spelling.

Aksel might well get a variety of pronunciations, and yooooonique spelling reactions!

While I like Axel, if you are looking for a sib-set, Emil fits much better than Axel or Aksel.

mumtotwox · 06/10/2023 18:18

Thank you so much! Really appreciate from different angles 😊

I have to say when I see "Aksel" it takes me a second to understand what I've just seen.
"Axel" on the other hand is obvious. I think your DS would prefer to have a name that people can spell/read more easily or like a PP said it would be annoying.
Go with Axel and then it's the best of both worlds surely?
