Barry or Bernard?

DS4 and I'm thinking Barry or Bernard. I already have Dennis, Doreen and Benedict.
I like unusual old fashioned names.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Barry is dated, not classic. It would be like naming a newborn girl Maureen, Brenda or Eileen, they’re not classic, they’re just old fashioned and of a particular time.

Did you miss the bit where OP has a DD called Doreen? 🤭

If you genuinely don’t give two hoots what people think then go ahead and call a child Barry (truly fucking awful name) or Bernard (Ever so slightly less awful, Bernie is cute). But in my opinion it’s cruel, you’ve got a lovely newborn little boy and you call him Barry? People will be aghast and talk about you behind your back, I know that sounds harsh but it’s true. The Health Visitors will gossip and say ‘I had a Barry in this morning!’ Mums in the park will go home and tell their husbands ‘there was a two year old little boy called bloody Barry today’.

But like I said, if that doesn’t bother you, go ahead, I admire your confidence. A name like Barry defers from old fashioned names like Arthur, George, Edward etc because at least they’re classic. You had me in stitches up to Eileen....love that name!

God poor Baz though. The EastEnders character really did a number on that name.

YourWinter · 04/10/2023 23:20

Good grief! Are you for real, OP?

LeftFooter · 04/10/2023 23:19

Barry is an awful name. Bernard (Bernie) is sort of cute.

OrangesLemonsLimes · 04/10/2023 23:18

I suspect that the OP is winding us up but I like Bernard! Reminds me of Bernard Butler as a pp said.

Ooh! I do like Derrick!

You're taking the piss!!

Dabralor · 04/10/2023 23:17

Sorry OP, that was a terrible joke. Your baby will make either name awesome. I bet there would be loads of threads on a 1990s version of Mumsnet about Harry and Alfie being old man names, and look at them now! Things always come around.

Best of luck with your new addition, whether he is a Barry or a Bernard 💐

StaunchMomma · 04/10/2023 23:17

They're not old fashioned though, they're only a few decades gone.

Barry is like the male equivalent of Tracey - popular in the 80's and thankfully not many these days!

And Bernard?!! For a baby?!!

Sorry OP but they're awful and people will laugh at your kids.

Didn't Megan Trainor call her fairly new baby Barry? So perhaps it is now becoming trendy.

She did!

But Trevor is also considered a nice name in America too.

Baz and Trev.

Dabralor · 04/10/2023 23:13

@FortunataTagnips neither - it's short for Barr-el of laughs.

SpringIntoChaos · 04/10/2023 23:10

😨 please don't - unless it's a dog you're naming! Fucking terrible to saddle a poor wee baby with Bazza or Bernard!! 🤦‍♀️

MrsDanversChickenSandwich · 04/10/2023 23:09

Barry Lyndon has a bit of cool about him. But he's swimming against the tide.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 04/10/2023 22:14

Balonz

Bazzonz, surely?

FawltyTower · 04/10/2023 23:05

It's going to be uncomfortable giving birth to a child who's smoking a pipe

😂😂😂😂😂

BeaLola · 04/10/2023 23:04

I would humbly suggest Peter - old fashioned but infinitely nicer than Barry or Bernard and goes with Benedict

Bruisername · 04/10/2023 23:03

Baz and Bazza are very common nicknames for Barry (see Gaz and Gaza for Garry, and Hazza for Harry). Not Basil!!

RedToothBrush · 04/10/2023 23:03

Barry Manilow. Shit.
Barry from the BeeGees. Cheese Fest.
Barry White. Just Embarassing.
Barry Chuckle. Yeah It Doesn't Get Better Does it?
Barry Humphries. Na Possums.

There has never been a cool Barry. Ever.

Bruisername · 04/10/2023 23:02

One of the Chuckle brothers was a Barry

Was just about to comment this! That's who I think of!

mdinbc · 04/10/2023 23:02

I'm going against the grain and saying go for it! Barry is a great name from the 50's, 60's.

It's following in the George, Fred, Arthur trend, but moving up a decade. Barry Gibb, Barry White; both very popular in the 70's,; they would have been born in the 50's.

It seems to me that great-grandparents' names are cool, but grandparent's are not. Time to start bringing them in!

I've never heard of Baz as a nickname, maybe it's short for Basil?

Bruisername · 04/10/2023 23:02

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 04/10/2023 23:01

I used to have a small crush on Bernard from Yes Minister. And Bernard Butler. But for a baby? No.

And surely you only mentioned Barry to make Bernard look more palatable!

HopeItsChips · 04/10/2023 22:59

Has anyone mentioned Barry Grant from Brookside yet?

Holesinthewalls · 04/10/2023 22:58

Sudename · 04/10/2023 22:56

Remember "I'm Barry Scott of Cillit Bang fame?

😂
