Why are boy names so hard?! :(

Currently pregnant with #2 and unsure of the gender as of yet. We have a girls name chosen and have had for a while, but are struggling with finding boys names we like. We like the more 'unusual' boho / nature themed names. This is the current list of names I like, but not love yet, so you get an idea.

Bear
Elijah (I like this but potentially too 'common')
Tate
Hendrix
Fox
Oren
Lennox
Wolf

Oban or Thornton or Thatcher

HeyYouWithTheSadFace · 27/09/2023 23:26

Oran or Odin!

I know an Odin, I think it's very cool!

I'm a teacher and only ever taught one Elijah. He's the only one in the school.

SkaneTos · 27/09/2023 21:57

Bjorn, perhaps? Means "bear" in Scandinavian languages (Björn/Bjørne).

ZoChan · 27/09/2023 21:22

Super outing but my two are

Huxley (means outdoorsman)
Quinlan (means wise.... but also, son of the handsome man - guess who chose this version of Quinn 🤔 😂)

hotcandle · 27/09/2023 21:19

@winterwinterbabyrose respectively, there is a massive difference between an unusual name and a name that would set a child up for a lifetime of not being taken seriously.

KayEmAy · 27/09/2023 21:18

YAY! My reaction when I see another person interested in unusual/modern names hehe (Nothing against the classics at all, but I also like your style)

I didn't mean to but some of them just first/middle paired up so I'm rolling with it :)

Bellamy Tate

Perry Hendrix

Jay Sawyer

Hawthorne James nn Huck/Hawk

Asa Lennox

Blaise Oren nn Bo

Hale Fox

Sterling Wolf

Wynn Hunter

Flint Roman

Kit Wilder

Pax Ryan

Tycho Rhys

Elijah Severin

Troy Gideon

Vesper James

Boys names aren't difficult. You're looking for names that are quite frankly ludicrous and that's the problem.

Bear, Fox, Wolf....you're naming a human being why would you do that?

CurlewKate · 27/09/2023 20:57

You may have to have had an old fashioned education to understand my last post.

CurlewKate · 27/09/2023 20:19

How about Elisha Bear?

MoralOrLegal · 27/09/2023 18:57

winterbabyrose · 27/09/2023 16:08

What are some opinions on the below combinations of first and middle names?

Elijah Bear
Hendrix James

Surely "Elishah Bear"?

Having an unusual name doesn't make you more creative or individual.

Elijah is nice, though.

I wouldn't put Hendrix with James, just because of Jimi Hendrix, it seems funny to me.

How about Asher? That has the same Biblical feel and softness as Elijah but also reminiscent of ash trees, so it has that hippy nature feel too.

17caterpillars1mouse · 27/09/2023 18:52

Bear - I just don't think I'd want to be a man called Bear. Yes Bear Grylls pulls it off but would your average man. Maybe as a middle name or just as a nickname e.g. Noah Bear is affectionately know as Bear in the family?

Elijah - I like it and the potential for Eli as a nn. I only know 2 (one is 7 the other under 1)

Tate - not a fan

Hendrix - there is a Hendrix in my dds swimming class and he is a pain in the arsenal, as is his mother who thinks his antics are adorable despite disrupting every other child's lesson repeatedly. So I associate it with entitled boys and their over indulgent mothers. Love Hendrik however

Fox - same feelings as Bear but not quite as bad

Oren - this is my second favourite on your list, after Elijah

Lennox - has similar vibes to Hendrix but I've only ever cone across it as a girls name

Wolf - see Bear, slightly better than Bear but worse than Fox

A few suggestions:

Quinn
Brody
Osian
Rowan
Sage
Asher

RedGreenBlueSky · 27/09/2023 16:39

The last baby I was introduced to was Hendrix so perhaps not as unusual as you would think. Tate made me immediately think of Andrew Tate so would be a no (also, on same theme Fox and Laurence Fox but that's less obvious!)

What about Rowan, Jasper, August, River, Oakley?

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 27/09/2023 16:31

Bramble? I know of one, a teenager now.

CurlewKate · 27/09/2023 16:30

How about Briar if you like nature names? Or Daisy?

GG1975 · 27/09/2023 16:27

I really like Elijah Bear. I work in a school and in all the years I've worked there we have had some very unique names but never an Elijah.

BambinoBlue · 27/09/2023 16:13

I had a Bodhi just yesterday as well 😁

BambinoBlue · 27/09/2023 16:11

I've registered lots of baby Bears. And a whole gaggle of Teddys.

No Elijah though yet.

Also, I've personally registered three Mavericks in the last year 😁 And a Hendrix. And a Rebel. It's become quite a thing to pick names like that.

winterbabyrose · 27/09/2023 16:11

@hotcandle @FoodFann Thank you for your opinions, however my post clearly states we favour more unusual names and are looking for ideas of similar ones! If you have nothing constructive to add, there is no need to comment, but thank you for taking the time anyway x

I know two adult Wolf's!

One is German and its short for Wolfgang. The other is English.

I think you are struggling because you are trying too hard to find something unusual. There are lots of really lovely, but slightly more common, names.

I've lived with an uncommon name for 56 years and you have to accept that the constant cost of choosing it is that it will be misspelt regularly and in my case actually changed for a name thats common and close in pronunciation

Yes I myself have an uncommon name, one that I have never come across another in person! My husband also has a more uncommon name. We both love the creativity and individualism having a more unusual name gives. The only thing I wasn't a fan of when I was little was not being able to find my name on those name mug stands at the seaside 😆
