Honest opinions on the name Emmeline (pronounced Emma-leen) please.

Both DH and I love it but concerned about:

  1. a lifetime of having to say ‘it’s Emmeline, not Emily’;
  2. baby (don’t actually know if it’s a girl yet) will have my surname (and DH surname as a middle name) - don’t know if the Pankhurst associations makes the whole package - including maternal surname - a bit too feminist ?! Should add am a loud and proud feminist myself.

Thanks all

This is my daughter’s name! We do get a lot of ‘Emma-line’ pronunciations and I have to emphasise the ‘n’ so people don’t think her name is Emily (also love Emily/emma-line anyway) but I adore her name and I’ve never met anyone with the name. I sometimes wonder if I have a second girl how I’ll find a name I like as much 😂

also love the middle name!

Awwwwww that's lovely.

Thanks for updating.

Thank you all for your feedback! Our beautiful girl Emmeline Alice was born earlier this month.

We adore her name and have had an overwhelmingly lovely response to
it. Only been a few instances of ‘Emmeline, not Emily’ thus far ;)

Love it. And Emme/y/ie is a lovely nickname.

Sorry I don’t like it. Emily is much nicer

Am with you - I have an adult Emily!

TheMurderousGoose · 24/09/2023 01:35

Too feminist? What is that?

I'm delighted to hear the baby will have your surname. But your average person won't even have heard of Emmeline Pankhurst (it's true) let alone make any feminist connection between the first name and knowing baby has mum's surname.

I have to say though that I'd assume Emmeline was pronounced -line rather than -leen. I think the name is okay, too frilly for my taste but nothing wrong with it as such.

thecatinthetwat · 24/09/2023 00:34

Love it!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/09/2023 00:30

Too fussy. I much prefer Emma and Emily. Or even Gemma for a change.

kshaw · 23/09/2023 23:26

I love it. Got a colleague with a daughter named it and she goes by Emmy. Love both

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/09/2023 23:15

Ellaline? That’s a tongue twister surely?

YukoandHiro · 23/09/2023 23:13

You might also like Ellaline which was on my list

YukoandHiro · 23/09/2023 23:13

LOVE! Wanted it but DH didn't like.
Emmy for short.

Moveoverdarlin · 23/09/2023 23:01

I love it and I never like any of the names mentioned on these threads.

cheapskatemum · 23/09/2023 22:58

Love it. As well as the Hot Chocolate song & the AA Milne poem, there's a short story by James Joyce in Dubliners called Emmeline. From memory, she flits to avoid a future ruled by patriarchy, so aptly feminist.

BowiesJumper · 23/09/2023 22:26

I really like it. And I loved the AA Milne poem “Emmeline has not been seen…” when I was a kid.

PurpleChrayne · 23/09/2023 22:21

Too fussy.

SunnieShine · 23/09/2023 21:41

Not keen.

IVFfirsttimer91 · 23/09/2023 21:40

I think it’s a lovely name, I was considering it for our baby, but my name is Emma so it’s a bit to similar!

Mountaineer0009 · 23/09/2023 21:38

@LucyEleanorModeratz
sounds like a name of a service a company offers

Whippetlovely · 23/09/2023 20:10

Sorry I don’t like it. Emily is much nicer

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/09/2023 20:05

Love it. Love the Hot Chocolate song too.

eastiseastwestiswest · 23/09/2023 20:02

It's lovely

Tadpolle · 23/09/2023 19:58

It's fantastic and there's no such thing as too feminist, of course!

Our Dd has a suffragette first name and my surname (her dad's surname as a middle name) too.

Congratulations

greglet · 23/09/2023 19:47

I like it. My little boy has a friend at nursery called Emmeline (Emmy) and she's a sweetie.

WanderingWitches · 23/09/2023 19:22

I think it is really lovely
