Austyn for a girl?

Martha300 · 20/09/2023 01:06

Me and DH both love unisex names and Austyn happens to be our number one name for DD at the moment. Mother in law absolutely loathes the name and suggests we give her something more traditional and feminine for a girl like Catherine or Eliza etc. but we’re both set on Austyn. But to be fair we will give her a traditional middle name, so she’ll be something along the lines of Austyn Elizabeth or Austyn Marie to satisfy mothers in law’s wishes. We’ve decided on the spelling Austyn as opposed to Austin for a feminine touch. Other names we loved but decided against are Logan, Dylan, Robyn, and Riley.

Now, DH isn’t 100 percent sure if Austyn is the right name as Austyn was my idea first so we would like to hear your honest opinions on our chosen name.

OP posts:

Also not convinced this is real, but on the off-chance it is...

I’m going to save this thread in the future so me and my little Austyn can have a ball and get a good laugh from the comments

Confused OP, please do not show your daughter a thread with masses of people slagging off her name.

I have to spell my name for everyone - it’s only 5 letters and uncomplicated so they tend to get it first or second time but I am sorry I think she is going to have a lot of trouble spelling her name to people. When I first read the word I thought you had misspelled autism.
But ignore your m’n’law it’s your child!

Dd3 has a 5 letter name and everyday someone pronounces it incorrectly. Today she said her music teacher who normally gets it right even said it wrong. It was even a conversation in her Biology class the other day! You'd think in year 11 they'd have better things to be getting along with. It is a classic Greek name, her father is Greek but I should have put more thought into it. Dd2 thinks she has the worst name out of her siblings and was even going to change it but she seems to have put it on the back burner for now - her name is Mary.

@Sparklecats I'm so sorry. English is only my fourth language, so mistakes do happen.

Best humble brag ever!! 👏👏👏

My DD is going to be a little rockstar and she will learn to love her bright and unique name.

I suspect that a child with Rebel as a middle name will end up an office manager..

Whatever you call her try not to project onto her, she likely won’t be whatever your idea of a rockstar is.

@Martha300 .I love your final decison...given ya asked on the wurldwideweb and finalised despite some savage responses...you could praps/if inclined...do one of the namerology (i very doubt thats the term used)-where (allegedly)personality etc can be-set in stone...by divination.
and
then
do whatever ya like anyhow.

May your angle bring you happiness OP. Just remember, you cannot design your children. You get what you're given and you love them as they are.

Presumably, the OP CAN design her children if they're going to have angles, just a matter of selecting whether they be obtuse, right or acute I guess!

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/09/2023 09:57

Little Austyn might turn out to be a right angle but children IMO should be well- rounded. Maybe I'm just ahead of the curve.

MissBattleaxe · 22/09/2023 18:28

Loving the sin cos tan puns!

IndysMamaRex · 23/09/2023 09:12

Sorry OP not a fan. Spelling the name differently doesn’t make it more feminine it’ll just make people think you can’t spell when they read the name.

also the only thing Austin could be shortened to is Ozzy or Oz so future kid can’t even shorten the name without it becoming more boy sounding

FallGall · 23/09/2023 09:57

OMG OP great update! And an absolutely amazing idea about reading your thread with your DD when's she's older! You

My name my daughter thread is still here and she's 18 this month!! I'm away to search and see what names I was thinking!! I remember I wanted a Chinese one as her dad is Chinese.

She didn't end up with a Chinese one. In fact I loved the name I chose and thought it was unusual. Which it was at the time!!

But I bet you all know at least 3 girls with the same name!!!

FallGall · 23/09/2023 10:13

@Martha300 well I checked and here is a bit from my baby's name thread! Can't believe she still didn't have a name at 3 weeks old! What the hell were we calling her? Baby??

The things you forget!!

Probably the last time I watched Corrie too!!
_

  • I think you're right about being teased about Mee Lie, so we're going for Scarlett or Bonnie.

But there seems to be a lot of dogs called Bonnie , poor wee soul, nearly 3 weeks old and has no name!!!

I suspect Scarlett is going to win...but apparantly somone on Eastenders is called that. Not sure as I'm a Corrie girl!!!

God it's just soo hard, it took us 5 weeks to name ds2!!!*

It really bothers me when people feel entitled to give a negative opinion on someone's name choices. In my experience, the names (my friends and family have used for their children) that I've initially thought were awful, I've complimented because I recognise they mean a lot to the parents and in every single case the name has grown on me to the point I have loved some of them because the child is so adorable and they just become it. Names before birth are always going to divide opinion, my dad didn't like my daughter's name at first mention but I know it's one of his favourite names now and yhars because of her. Choose what you love, unless it's 'bus stop' or 'taxi' or 'watermelon' -in that case, please think about this 😆

The troll OP asked for honest opinions. People giving their honest opinion isn't feeling entitled, it's literally why she started the thread.

And you DO have a line - bus stop, taxi, watermelon, so you've contradicted yourself.

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/09/2023 12:24

@Blondebrunette1 , the response to the name on this thread is predominantly negative. People on here are likely to be more blunt than people IRL, but if the posts here are so negative, people will probably think the same IRL, but will say 'What a lovely name' or 'What an unusual name'.

If you ask for opinions, then surely you'd prefer to get the opinions before you named the baby.

DeliaOwens · 23/09/2023 12:58

OP, this is said from a lifetime of experience...giving your child a normal name with unique spelling is setting her up for a life time of her saying "AustYn, no, with a Y" etc etc...it is such a chore.

Add to that hearing the phrase "oh, isn't that a very unusual name" always said with a bit if an eyebrow raise will make her very fed up with the unique name...

OffTheWall90 · 24/09/2023 07:07

I think the lines are a lot more blurred now on boys and girls names. I had a name that was spelt "the girls way" but tbh now the spellings vary for boys and girls and I don't think anyone knows with my name if it is a boy or girls name first. If you both decide you really like the name go for it. The only time I think it really matters with a name is if a horrible nickname could be made at school as kids can be cruel. I cannot think of anything horrible for the name you're choosing. If you want to go through a big list of names have a look on office of national statistics registered names and they have thousands for boys and girls where at least one child was registered with that name x

Personally I love having an unusual name

QueeniePlumtree · 26/09/2023 16:21

Ooooh, actually I think Austyn for a girl sounds lovely.
It actually feels like a strong, classic name.

Austyn Elizabeth sounds great!

My mother and sisters HATED my sons name, (Gabriel). He's in his teens now and whenever we are in their company and people compliment his name, they all swoon, 'Yes, isn't it gorgeous' (roll eyes)

BUT, I really do not like their choices of names at all for their children. One reminds me of a fluid cleaner my mum used to give me to clean the bath with!

Each to their own.......but, remember if you love it that is all that counts.

@CharlotteBog I was obviously (I thought) was not talking about people on MN giving honest opinions given on this non personal, anonymous thread 🤦🏼‍♀️. My comments were regarding the RL situation the OP posted about, yes, it bothers me when people IRL feel the need to project their preferences onto others without being asked i.e the MIL who has made it known she "loathes" the name the OP wants to name her child.

Also, yes I would advise anyone to rethink "bus stop" as a child's name (pretty sure that one's not actually allowed to be registered on a birth certificate) but as a general rule I wouldn't be so arrogant to view my preference as more valuable than the parents when choosing names and spellings, I got that privilege when naming my own children.

Blondebrunette1 · 12/10/2023 13:14

@MerryChristmasToYou again, sorry if I wasn't clear but I was not referring to MN users commenting anonymously on a thread where honest opinions have been welcomed by the OP. I'm talking about people in RL, in this instance the MIL, feeling entitled to openly say they loathe the parents name choices. It's arrogant and unnecessary imo and shouldn't be considered by the parents at all.

MerryChristmasToYou · 12/10/2023 13:39

@Blondebrunette1 , IRL if the child has already been named then it's probably best to not say 'That's awful'. I would point out if the name was silly (Scarlett Amber Green, Charlie Usman Newton-Thomas or something).

FlamingBlue · 12/10/2023 16:13

Really awful. Go for it as long as you don't mind her changing it when she gets older.
