Austyn for a girl?

Martha300 · 20/09/2023 01:06

Me and DH both love unisex names and Austyn happens to be our number one name for DD at the moment. Mother in law absolutely loathes the name and suggests we give her something more traditional and feminine for a girl like Catherine or Eliza etc. but we’re both set on Austyn. But to be fair we will give her a traditional middle name, so she’ll be something along the lines of Austyn Elizabeth or Austyn Marie to satisfy mothers in law’s wishes. We’ve decided on the spelling Austyn as opposed to Austin for a feminine touch. Other names we loved but decided against are Logan, Dylan, Robyn, and Riley.

Now, DH isn’t 100 percent sure if Austyn is the right name as Austyn was my idea first so we would like to hear your honest opinions on our chosen name.

The Welsh in me feels that adding a y makes it more masculine not feminine.
Though I know it’s not a welsh word of course.

I’m with the,
if you have to, use Jane’s surname crowd.

CoreopsisEverywhere · 20/09/2023 18:32

If you really like it I’d keep it as a middle name. Your daughter will thank you for not using it as first name.

LadyRoughDiamond · 20/09/2023 18:27

Bloody awful. Sorry, but stop making up rubbish names and saddling poor kids with them. It’s not about you, it’s about your child and what will serve them well.

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/09/2023 18:26

It's wind up. There are no other posts by the OP.

Prescottdanni123 · 20/09/2023 18:24

I like it but would spell is Austen instead. Like Jane Austen.

Unicorn2022 · 20/09/2023 18:20

Honestly it's awful and I hate it. It sounds like an American trailer name.

That might be better option !?

illiterato · 20/09/2023 18:15

Also think about whether you want her to have a unique name in the age of Google. I actually wish I’d given my dc more “John Doe” names and they’re not “out there” by any stretch of the imagination ( both names inside top 100 at the time)

Itsnamechange · 20/09/2023 18:13

Please don't Jerry Springer up your daughter's name by throwing a Y into it where a Y shouldn't be. It's so tacky.

Private1980 · 20/09/2023 18:12

I love it if I'm honest I like odd but unique names but I think it would go really well with austyn Nancy just my opinion if you love it you have it better than having 20 same name girls in the school her name will be as unique as she will be and by the times she's in high school everyone will probably be calling each other bruh 🤣 anyway

Chewbecca · 20/09/2023 18:11

I’m with your MIL, sorry.

it isn’t a ‘gender neutral’ name plus it is misspelt.

Robyn is fine.

This is ludicrous- just give your kid a proper girls name.

Loramora · 20/09/2023 18:03

This is an insane take 😂. All names are made up. All of them! I like Austyn for a girl. I called my son Logan and aparently according to my American friends it’s quite a popular girls name over there. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Who cares. If you like it then who cares - it’s not one of those crazy out there names in terms of what Elon Musk named his children and its not exactly going to be extremely different for her to spell when she gets to school. I say crack on. I loved Robyn for a girl and would have called my child that had he been a girl.

Shrubb157 · 20/09/2023 18:02

Just to add I also like Austen.

Not usually a fan of unusual spellings of names either.

Shrubb157 · 20/09/2023 18:00

I love it as a girls’ name. I also like the spelling with the ‘y’. I like Dylan and Riley too.

TheBerry · 20/09/2023 17:58

I think it’s tacky. Just reminds me of all those American trailer trash names. I can’t imagine it’ll age well, either.

Etoile41 · 20/09/2023 17:57

Sorry, really don't like it. Robyn and Riley are ok

Hpitblado · 20/09/2023 17:57

Personally see people bullied alot for names and I think this is one.

hot2trotter · 20/09/2023 17:55

Why would you do that to your child, moreover, your female child.

Minglemangle007 · 20/09/2023 17:54

I think it's a silly name and she will spend her entire school days being called Oz or Ozzie.

CurlewKate · 20/09/2023 17:50

Are you going to call a future son Rose, Grace or Pearl?

CurlewKate · 20/09/2023 17:48

It's not a unisex name.

AnneValentine · 20/09/2023 17:48

Whatever name you choose please spell it in the obvious way. There is nothing fun about a name that’s made weird by the spelling and there’s nothing fun about spelling your name every single time you have to give it ever.

I work in a secondary, I cannot tell you how many kids with weird names change them / correct the spelling.

BettyBallerina · 20/09/2023 17:46

I just think you’re saddling her with a lifetime of spelling out and correcting her name. Austen as in Jane is nicer. At least then when she’s asked to spell it, she can say ‘as in Jane’ (although there are plenty of people who get that wrong and spell it Austin).
