Austyn for a girl?

Me and DH both love unisex names and Austyn happens to be our number one name for DD at the moment. Mother in law absolutely loathes the name and suggests we give her something more traditional and feminine for a girl like Catherine or Eliza etc. but we’re both set on Austyn. But to be fair we will give her a traditional middle name, so she’ll be something along the lines of Austyn Elizabeth or Austyn Marie to satisfy mothers in law’s wishes. We’ve decided on the spelling Austyn as opposed to Austin for a feminine touch. Other names we loved but decided against are Logan, Dylan, Robyn, and Riley.

Now, DH isn’t 100 percent sure if Austyn is the right name as Austyn was my idea first so we would like to hear your honest opinions on our chosen name.

Don’t like the Y spelling it’s condemning her to explaining it’s a Y. Why not Austen as in Jane Austen is you love the name then it’s easier to explain.

You could always use Marina or Allegro as a middle name.

I was thinking along the lines of Seven or Texas or even Powers

I don’t think it’s a gender neutral name at all. It’s a surname and a place name that’s become a popular boys’ name.

By naming your daughter Austyn, and with this spelling, she’s going to spend her whole life being mistaken for male and constantly having her name misspelled.

And to be perfectly frank, it's none of your MIL's business, so don't do anything to appease her. I personally wouldn't be discussing names with family or friends beforehand because opinions are like arseholes, everyone's got one.

Announce the name once baby is born and registered and fuck what negativity anyone dares to bring on.

I really like it. I don’t like the spelling so much, I’d just call her Austen or Austin.

It’s a powerful name for a little girl. Solid choice.

I don't like it either, though do quite like Austin for a boy. A previous PP's idea of Austen is good, or Alex (Alexandria), or August(a).

Honestly, I don’t love it. But, I think Austine is quite pretty? I know it’s just a couple of letters difference but it might just be feminine enough to be a good compromise whilst still being close enough to the name you like and still unique

I don’t particularly like the name for a girl.

I do think you have to bear in mind that she will be forever asked how to spell it. My former surname had two different spellings, mine was the more unusual spelling, and it’s utterly tedious, having to spell your name all the time or having people just assuming the more usual and therefore incorrect spelling.

I am not keen on Austin as a name for a girl, and even less keen on spelling it as Austyn - your daughter will probably end up as one of those people who constantly has to tell people her name is spelled wrong.
Of course it's your choice, but stick with standard spelling if you do use Austin.

As a teacher, I've seen much stranger names than this and nobody bats an eye. Go for it. My sister had a super traditional, feminine name but wanted to be called Derek as a kid. She was called that until she was about 10! Now she's the most feminine out of us sisters. The name won't change who she grows up to be. Personally, I'm a bit tired of names with a y instead of an I but that's just me and I think it's a pretty sounding name.

I don't like Austyn personally. But I do like traditionally boys names for girls. I have Blake as a girls name, I do also like your Riley and Dylan for a girl. Logan is boys name definitely.

I don’t like the name and I think that spelling is silly. Like you’re trying to be ‘special’ by spelling it wrong.

but it’s your baby, your choice, not anyone else’s, and I think it’s nice you’d include a more traditional middle name to show MIL you care about her view. If you and DH agree, go for it.

I think its universally a no, but if you like it, its fine.
A couple did name their child after an entire football team, so you're doing fine.

Also, a lifetime of no one spelling her name right. It pissed me off no end when people couldn't spell Rena, so I opted for a shortening of my full name.

I can understand grandma’s opinion (and never tell people the name before the birth!) - spelling it with a Y doesn’t make it sound feminine and just makes it looks odd. If you want to name your DD Austin then go for it. I don’t mind some boys names on girls (Dylan / Riley) but not seeing the appeal of Austin / Austyn but your baby, your choice at the end of the day. Just expect some comments when you announce, but it might be one of those names that grows on you once you know one!

I seem to be the odd one out but I really like the name Austyn 💗 it’s is ‘odd’ and some would said ‘weird’ but that’s just because it’s different. My name is a very traditional name but spelt in a really weird way but I’m used to people mispronouncing it and the ‘oh that’s an unusual spelling’ remarks! Sucks that I can never get a souvenir with my name on it lol but never mind 👍🏻 my parents are also completely traditional, non-quirky parents so it’s even stranger that they went with my spelling!
If you both love it then go for it and don’t listen to anyone else - especially the MIL 🙈
