Austyn for a girl?

Martha300 · 20/09/2023 01:06

Me and DH both love unisex names and Austyn happens to be our number one name for DD at the moment. Mother in law absolutely loathes the name and suggests we give her something more traditional and feminine for a girl like Catherine or Eliza etc. but we’re both set on Austyn. But to be fair we will give her a traditional middle name, so she’ll be something along the lines of Austyn Elizabeth or Austyn Marie to satisfy mothers in law’s wishes. We’ve decided on the spelling Austyn as opposed to Austin for a feminine touch. Other names we loved but decided against are Logan, Dylan, Robyn, and Riley.

Now, DH isn’t 100 percent sure if Austyn is the right name as Austyn was my idea first so we would like to hear your honest opinions on our chosen name.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

@Fallingthroughclouds Can you think of any girl's names that have changed to become boy's names?

GoryBory · 21/09/2023 07:33

My DD is going to be a little rockstar and she will learn to love her bright and unique name.

Oh dear 🤦‍♀️

Word of advice.
Please do not live through your child and do not force them into a personality they don’t want to be.

They will show you what sort of person they are as they grow.

Your obsession to make your child different and woke is very odd and I’m concerned for your future child/children.

@Menomave "I used to work with a bloke called Tracey who used to get some stick but he was probably named after tracey spencer"
Tell us what it was like back then in the 1950s!

Yes-names do change. They stop being used for boys the second they start being used for girls. There is no such thing as a unisex name!

So boys are no longer called Charlie, Billy, Bobby, Riley, Sam?

What a silly statement.

TiredMamOfTwo · 21/09/2023 07:14

How does one even pronounce that? 😂

Anyone else look at these weirdly spelt names and just think "nope! I'm not even going to attempt to say that out loud."

Sparklecats · 21/09/2023 07:14

@Martha300

Groovy baby!

ImWally6 · 21/09/2023 07:08

Please don't name your son Billie Brave

ittakes2 · 21/09/2023 07:05

I have to spell my name for everyone - it’s only 5 letters and uncomplicated so they tend to get it first or second time but I am sorry I think she is going to have a lot of trouble spelling her name to people. When I first read the word I thought you had misspelled autism.
But ignore your m’n’law it’s your child!

texenstar · 21/09/2023 06:43

Glad to hear it! I called my daughter Clementine which lots of people hate 😂 there’s gotta be some variety in the world! Good luck with your birth x

I’m confused. If it’s a unisex name (it’s not btw) and you want a unisex name, why do you need to include the y to give it feminine touch?

Seems easier to me to either call her Austin and deal with the inevitable confusion or pick an actual girl’s name.

Hello everyone, so DH and I have read through all of your comments and we would just like to thank you all for your kind words but we’ve decided that we are going stick with it and name our soon to be born DD Austyn Rebel.💚My DD is going to be a little rockstar and she will learn to love her bright and unique name. I understand that not a lot of people are keen on the name but the reactions to her name were expected. I’m going to save this thread in the future so me and my little Austyn can have a ball and get a good laugh from the comments because of how genius her name really is! There’s enough Catherines and Elizas in the world, so we’ve vetoed giving her a traditionally feminine mn as well. It’s just so…well boring. On another note we’ve decided that if we ever have a son he too will have a unisex name. We were thinking Robin or Billie (yes, after Billie Eilish) paired with the middle name Brave.🙌But anyways our little angle is due January so we still have time to think about the spelling. But I would like to close off here. I wish everyone a lovely day.🙂

Well done, you got everyone. 😂 I think everyone thought you were being serious with your initial post but your update is too much.

Menomave · 21/09/2023 06:10

I actually don't mind it. I would mention that Dylan is a boy's name. It's Welsh. Properly pronounced 'Dullan'. Some names change 'sex' over the years - I used to work with a bloke called Tracey who used to get some stick but he was probably named after tracey spencer

Seddon · 21/09/2023 04:52

If this is real (which I'm starting to doubt) it's looking increasingly like these two haven't twigged to the fact that they'll be raising an actual human being with its own thoughts, feelings and life. At this point the poor little 'angle' is just a dress up doll/instagram prop.

CJsGoldfish · 21/09/2023 04:43

Shouldn't that be Austyn Rebyl? 😂

I was sucked in until that last post. You'd have to be pretty ignorant to put that kind of expectation and/or assumption on your child. That, or still a teen cos Rebyl is one of those stoopid names you only dream of as a child 🙄

Jasmine222 · 21/09/2023 04:26

“Rebel” is the probably the most awful middle name I've ever heard. What if your daughter doesn't want to be a rebel? Will that be ok with you?

Thats an awful lot to ask of your daughter. I think you should consider her.

The chances are your daughter will be just a regular person who just wants to fit in and feel attractive and comfortable. Help her.

Sorry but what a Horrible name. I teach and have 3 kids… if I came across that name in any context I’d be thinking “pretentious / chavvy parents” and “poor child having that as a name”. Ghastly. Harsh sounding. Makes everyone think of Austin Powers and the Car… silly spelling which makes it into a non- name…
It’s like calling your child “John” but wanting to be unique and changing it to “Jobn” … the Y just makes it a nonsense and it’s a horrid name to begin with. Don’t do it to this poor baby. She will grow up hating it and probably wanting to change it.

'Jobn'..oh I'm dying 🤣

oakleaffy · 21/09/2023 03:37

CrappyBarbara · 20/09/2023 23:59

If you absolutely must use this name please at least reconsider the absurd spelling.

Says ''Crappy Barbara!'' ..oh love it! 😂

Now that DEFINITELY sounds like an old banger car from the 1970s! Austyn Marie! 😆

Austyn Marie! 😂🚗
This thread has given me a laugh, though. {If you are reading this, Austyn, Hope you don't mind- blame your Mum and Dad!

Here are Austin and Morris, Whippets {not mine} - but kind boys.

Their owner is a vintage car nut, I think, as their other dog is called Cooper
Here are the dogs in question.

Austyn for a girl?

Austyn Rebel will probably be a chartered Accountant .
If you are reading this, Austyn Rebel in 2043, I hope you are happy, and like your name {That reminds me of Whippets!} {Austin and Morris} 🙂
