Austyn for a girl?

Martha300 · 20/09/2023 01:06

Me and DH both love unisex names and Austyn happens to be our number one name for DD at the moment. Mother in law absolutely loathes the name and suggests we give her something more traditional and feminine for a girl like Catherine or Eliza etc. but we’re both set on Austyn. But to be fair we will give her a traditional middle name, so she’ll be something along the lines of Austyn Elizabeth or Austyn Marie to satisfy mothers in law’s wishes. We’ve decided on the spelling Austyn as opposed to Austin for a feminine touch. Other names we loved but decided against are Logan, Dylan, Robyn, and Riley.

Now, DH isn’t 100 percent sure if Austyn is the right name as Austyn was my idea first so we would like to hear your honest opinions on our chosen name.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My girls are called Riley & Blair (I’m in Scotland, not not traditional girls names here). Riley has 2 other Riley’s (both female) with variants on spelling in her class, and I know if 3 Blair’s under age 2, all girls, so the names are growing in popularity. My girls really suit their names! My Riley is the girliest girl going, Blair is just a baby so we’ve yet to find out her personality. It’s your baby, you decide the name, not your mother in law or anyone else!

for what it’s worth, I love Dylan for a girl! And Cameron too! You do you OP! Xx

I think you mean geniyus. Remember, the correct spelling is only a social construct.

Personally I think OP should call her 📐 angle

“Osstyn”
As in Ostentatious .

localnotail · 21/09/2023 16:50

I'm disappointed its not going to be Austin Ambassador. Imagine if she grows up and chooses a diplomatic career!

COPPER3 · 21/09/2023 16:37

As I said upthread, almost all names are shortened when kids start going to school and playing with their peers.

Ausie....

MerryChristmasToYou · 21/09/2023 16:17

@Fallingthroughclouds , there are loads of female Traceys, Kellys, Kerrys and Lindsays my age, and those were surnames or boys' names previously. They might have been unisex, but were generally used as and considered to be girls' names.

Fallingthroughclouds · 21/09/2023 16:07

CurlewKate · 21/09/2023 07:36

@Fallingthroughclouds Can you think of any girl's names that have changed to become boy's names?

No, I can't think of any that have completely changed, either girls to boys or boys to girls, hence why there are unisex names.

I noticed the 📐 angle, too.
Maybe a joke post .

Suspect so too…

Sparklecats · 21/09/2023 13:54

I prefer Austyn to Austyna or Austyne the latter of which makes me think of austere.

I wonder is there was any nutter who called their child Austerity during those years…. Would not surprise me at all.

I like Austyn, so no discussion there 😊 Where I live often an e or an a is added to make a name (more) feminin. I know a Robinne, also an Andrea and a Roberta. Just an idea, it could solve the MIL problem 😊

Except in the word feminine where it is actually required it seems…

Seddon · 21/09/2023 04:52

If this is real (which I'm starting to doubt) it's looking increasingly like these two haven't twigged to the fact that they'll be raising an actual human being with its own thoughts, feelings and life. At this point the poor little 'angle' is just a dress up doll/instagram prop.

I noticed the 📐 angle, too.
Maybe a joke post .

Mummingit85 · 21/09/2023 12:54

I wouldn’t be swayed by mother in laws opinion. But I agree with other posters, spelling it Austyn does not make the name more feminine. It looks confusing and misspelled.
Austen is a good shout or Aubrey as an alternative

peaceinourtime · 21/09/2023 12:50

It’s your choice OP but you are setting baby Austyn up for a lifetime of correcting her name. I know a child call Ayva , it does happen

No, I’ve not read the whole thread, and I rarely get involved on name threads, but I really like the name, and if you still do, then use it. Your baby, your choice.

@CM1897

Did you change the N in names to J for a modern twist?

Good old auto correct lol, works though.

Technically all words are social constructs, so James could mean names 🙈

Mumof2boys999 · 21/09/2023 09:04

I'm very happy for you to choose whatever name you like for your child.
Personally, I quite like Austyn as a name. It's quite the norm to tweak the spelling of names and has been for quite a few years now.

MissBattleaxe · 21/09/2023 08:58

May your angle bring you happiness OP. Just remember, you cannot design your children. You get what you're given and you love them as they are.

Sparklecats · 21/09/2023 08:56

CM1897 · 21/09/2023 08:55

James are socially constructed. Names are just jumbled letters made into names by society. Names that were used years ago are ‘strange’ to us now, the new ‘unique’ names people use now will someday probably be the norm. Just call them what you like (within reason, some names are banned for obvious reasons)

My DD is going to be a little rockstar and she will learn to love her bright and unique name.

Alternatively, like me, she will grow up crippled by shyness and hate introducing herself until she can change her name.

Yep!
The more you force someone to try and be something they’re not, the more the opposite takes place.

Its very telling from the list of names OP and her DH what sort of people they are and what kind of parents they will be.

I do feel sorry for their child/children as I can imagine this woke parenting is not going to stop at just the names.

CharlotteBog · 21/09/2023 07:57

Well done, you got everyone. 😂 I think everyone thought you were being serious with your initial post but your update is too much.

Even when you suspect a thread to be a wind up, the discussion can be fun.

Panjandrum123 · 21/09/2023 07:48

It’s not my cup of tea but it’s not my baby. (And I also thought what ittakes2 said, that you’d misspelled autism.)
