Thoughts on the Sanskrit name, Deepti, for a baby girl? It means flame, candle light and illumination.

I do wonder where the MNers on these baby name threads live that they find names from any other culture aside from white British (possibly even white English) so unusual and think that people will find them difficult to pronounce . Do people really not come into contact with people from cultures/backgrounds other than their own?

I think it's a nice name OP.

kitsuneghost · 16/09/2023 14:10

Why are people so obsessed with whether it is from OPs culture.
If you like the name use it.
Many names used by Caucasian British parents originated elsewhere

MadeForThis · 16/09/2023 14:09

Worked with a Deepti once. Like the name.

ReadtheReviews · 16/09/2023 14:05

Love it, sounds sweet. Also love Paro as nn for Parvati.

Iloveavocadoes · 16/09/2023 14:04

It sounds like a machine translation software

Inkypot · 16/09/2023 13:59

I really like it. I have heard it a couple of times before and always think it sounds beautiful. The two Deepti's I've known have been two of the loveliest people ever.
Gorgeous name and if you love it please don't worry about the opinions of MN too much. It's a good name.

Fiddlerdragon · 16/09/2023 13:57

I don’t think it sounds very nice at all tbh. As a white British person I think it sounds like some kind of weird brand name

benoticanarsed · 16/09/2023 13:53

White British may think differently to you though. It doesn't make it a bad name obviously.

AbsoluteYawns · 16/09/2023 13:48

It's lovely and the meaning is so nice

CurlewKate · 16/09/2023 13:47

@pumpkinpatch2 OK- I won't comment then because I can only say how I think it would work on a white child!

HausofHolbein · 16/09/2023 13:35

Like it. Also like Aditi.

pumpkinpatch2 · 16/09/2023 13:25

@CurlewKate It is

Not my taste but that's personal

I have a foreign name and can guess people will say

Dipti

Deep Tee

then again, I knew a Kari and it was amazing how people mangled that as well.

CurlewKate · 16/09/2023 13:17

Is it from your culture?

continentallentil · 16/09/2023 13:11

If it’s name from your cultural background I think it’s fine. Not especially nice - deep sounds slightly odd in a name to my ears - but it’s ok.
