Thoughts on the Sanskrit name, Deepti, for a baby girl? It means flame, candle light and illumination.

It's quite nice bit I prefer Deepa

I had a friend at school called Deepa. She was absolutely beautiful and looked like Princess Jasmine so the name has positive associations for me. I do also like Deepti but prefer Deepa.

Wow some of the responses on here are touching on racists and definitely show prejudice.

Many names derive from Hebrew. The Torah has over 3000 names in it. Alot of these names a now 'common British names'.

Does that mean if you're not Jewish you shouldn't use the name Mary, Joseph, Isaac, Ruth, Abigale, Mathew, Jonathan, Jacob, Hannah or Sarah to name a few?

Op Deepti is a pretty name for any little girl and will become beautiful when she's a woman.

I prefer Deepali, but that’s only because I’ve never met a Deepti/Dipti that I’ve liked!

Justdontforgethelegofrog · 18/09/2023 17:12

I love it

ChocolateCroissantCafe · 18/09/2023 16:54

I'm surprised people haven't heard this name, I've come across it a few times in the UK. I didn't know the meaning behind it though, that's lovely.

Oldandcobwebby · 18/09/2023 16:43

I've never come across the name before, but I like it. It sounds a really light, pretty name. I'm sure it will really suit your beautiful baby.

Isitisit · 18/09/2023 16:09

I really like it

Sweatybettysboobs · 18/09/2023 16:07

I also worked with a Deepti, and a Deepthi, both were lovely and we're still in touch years later 🙂

Soubriquet · 18/09/2023 16:07

Honestly? Whilst I love the meaning, I don’t like the name. It also sounds like a boys name to me but I wouldn’t question it for a child who wasn’t white British because I would assume it was cultural

BingoandBlueyForever · 18/09/2023 16:07

I like it. I also like Devi and Tejal which sound similar to my ear.

leafinthewind · 18/09/2023 16:03

I like it. Met one once through school, and she was lovely, which helps.

LadyInside · 18/09/2023 16:00

Nothing wrong with the name if you like it.

Deepali might be easier for people pronounce as an alternative.

Or Diya also has a similar meaning.

CurlewKate · 18/09/2023 15:44

The reason I asked whether it was from the OP's culture is because I think on a white British child it has some Tellytubbies overtones.

pumpkinpatch2 · 18/09/2023 13:06

Thank you so much for all the comments! Some mixed ideas about Deepti, but overall it seems like a positive response! :)

Deepti is lovely. I also really like Anisha or Indira - both meanings are beautiful too x

Coffeesnob11 · 17/09/2023 14:55

The deepthi I know is the loveliest person ever but everyone says her name dip tee. As long as that doesn't bother you go fo4 it and ignore the negative Nellie's here.

Vexxa · 17/09/2023 14:55

I think it's very pretty (I'm white British and haven't heard the name before, fwiw).

DuchessOfWonderland · 17/09/2023 14:20

Not sure why the reply function didn’t work. But my comment about rudeness was aimed at couple of posters, who don't like the name "Not especially nice - deep sounds slightly odd in a name to my ears"
and "don’t think it sounds very nice at all tbh. As a white British person I think it sounds like some kind of weird brand name"

You think some white British names don't sound stupid to other cultures?
If you don't like a name, just say "not for me, thanks. I like name <X> better"

DuchessOfWonderland · 17/09/2023 14:16

No need to be rude

DuchessOfWonderland · 17/09/2023 14:16

Wow, so rude!

JanesBlond · 16/09/2023 22:32

I think it’s really pretty! I also really like Aarti

Daisybuttercup12345 · 16/09/2023 22:27

I think there are prettier names.

I do wonder where the MNers on these baby name threads live that they find names from any other culture aside from white British (possibly even white English) so unusual and think that people will find them difficult to pronounce . Do people really not come into contact with people from cultures/backgrounds other than their own?

I think it's a nice name OP.

I was just making an observation because I know how much of a nuisance it can be, I'm not saying don't use it.

I can see the errors that will be made here because of my own experience. My parents named me from their culture (rather than from mine) but within that culture there's also several ways to pronounce it, which adds to the confusion.

one friend with the same ethnic origin as mine has a Greek name, because her mum was studying Greek mythology at the time.

I get annoyed with the whole "oh well if it's from your culture, it's fine but otherwise not" thing. We all live in the world.

Re the meaning of Deepti, that is lovely - but my name also has a lovely meaning and it doesn't stop the errors people make.

Maybe only Johns and Janes don't get mispronounced.

I had a Helene at work tell me off constantly about the second e length and emphasis. She said it really upset her. I felt awful but I was doing my best.

sorry OP, perhaps I shouldn't say anything. The world is mad.

ScrantonDunderMifflin · 16/09/2023 14:13

Makes me think of Deepti from Love is Blind.
