Is this middle name strange?

Thinking of calling our daughter Olivia, middle name Bloom.

Is Bloom an acceptable middle name or is it too strange?

We wanted something unique and simple for her middle name to pair with Olivia, which is obviously very popular and thought Bloom was quite sweet.

Trying to avoid the more common single syllable names ie: Rose, May, Grace, Jane etc.

Thank you

It's nice

Olivia Bloom is smart, not too cute, different and entirely acceptable.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 14/09/2023 23:46

Blooming heck. No!!!

PickledScrump · 14/09/2023 21:45

At the moment a lot of lakes and ponds have dangerous Algae Blooms that can kill livestock and pets, there’s also chocolate bloom which is that white coating you get on chocolate. So to me it doesn’t have nice connotations.

Blossom would be similar and much nicer

It’s fine, because everyone will assume it’s a family surname.

Yes this.

TropicalTrama · 14/09/2023 19:28

My kids middle names are the slightly ridiculous names I loved but wasn’t ever going to saddle them with as first names. So I get it! But I don’t think you should put Bloom together with Olivia because yes it does sound like Orlando Bloom 🤣Olivia Blossom works though!

DarkSpark · 14/09/2023 19:22

With her currently popularity my first thought would be you were a huge Colleen Hoover fan! I thought It ends with us was bloody awful and the character's name horribly twee (although Bloom was the surname in fairness). Sorry!

RuthW · 14/09/2023 19:15

It's fine. Blossom is better

I like it. Lots of parents give their child the mother's maiden name as a middle name and no one thinks anything of that.

It's traditional for middle names in some parts of the country.

  • Girls get the surnames from the maternal line (mother, maternal grandmother, g-grandmother, etc.).
  • Boys get the christian name from the paternal line (father, paternal grandfather, g-grandfather, etc.).
daisypond · 14/09/2023 17:43

I don’t like it. It’s not a nice sound to me, and bloom is a bit of an odd word. I might assume you were Jewish too, or have Jewish links, as pp said, as it’s a common surname.

DontGiveMeThatOldCrap · 14/09/2023 17:40

Yes, it is strange

LunaandLily · 14/09/2023 17:36

I love it. One of Peaches Geldof’s boys has the middle names Bloom and Forever. I say go for it!

Crumbcatcher · 14/09/2023 17:23

I like it! Unusual but not odd. It's pretty.

Ontopofthesunset · 14/09/2023 17:18

It's fine but it's a pretty common surname, so people will probably assume it's your maiden name or another family name. I don't think anyone would hear Bloom as a middle name and think of a flower. They will think of James Joyce or Orlando - it's widely known as a Jewish surname, particularly in the US, as an anglicized version of Blum.

Thank you for this. I wish there was more Miranda!

AngryBirdsNoMore · 14/09/2023 17:13

Honestly, middle names are used so rarely, I reckon you can pretty much go wild. My DC have very bold middle names which mean a lot to me and my DH but which we’d never have given them as first names.

My daughter's middle name is Jane... she's 6.

Yes, but she's not one of thousands of girls with the middle name Jane. Of course there's the odd person (in the sense of 'isolated', not in the sense of 'strange') using it, but it's certainly not in the same category as Rose/Grace/May currently are. Jane, like Louise, is very much a middle name of my generation (and both Jane and Louise are very underused these days).

MysteryBelle · 14/09/2023 17:11

I think it’s sweet and unique. It has a lovely meaning. There are plenty of weird names around but I wouldn’t consider Bloom to be one of them. It’s just unusual and that’s ok.

Usually a weird name is weird because it doesn’t make sense or has a strange or derogatory meaning. Your choice isn’t either of those.

You are the parent and get to decide! Don’t let others’ potential judgement stop you from choosing a name that is meaningful or lovely to you.

Ikilledsyriusblack · 14/09/2023 16:42

Olivia Iris or Olivia Violet (as suggested by another poster) make beautiful combinations in my view, far nicer than Bloom. I’m not sure Bloom is a name that your daughter will enjoy telling others about as she gets older but perhaps I’m wrong.

Gnomegnomegnome · 14/09/2023 16:16

It’s beautiful and looks lovely with Olivia

MammaEvz3 · 14/09/2023 15:48

ShoesoftheWorld · 14/09/2023 07:01

Oh, and nobody calls their children Jane any more. That's your best bet for unusual tbh. If it has to be single-syllable or short, how about Ruth, Zoe, Joy, Mary, Fern?

My daughter's middle name is Jane... she's 6.

JengaNonConfirming · 14/09/2023 14:45

I think it's lovely x

Watchthedoormat · 14/09/2023 13:59

Was expecting to hate it but upon reading OP I found myself smiling and thinking it's beautiful.

ABC123DoReMiDoeRayMe · 14/09/2023 13:55

Fabulous. I'd do it as the first.
