DH name ideas

ParrotPaula · 07/09/2023 14:10

DH and I are very very unexpectedly expecting twin girls, I'm 39, he is 48. He already has one child, she's an adult now, and well I'd never say this to her face but I think her name is just awful (first name is a country which should never have been a name (ie not Georgia or India) then two middle names which scream I want to prove how middle class I am!!) As far as I know she likes her name so that's all that matters. The issue is, his name suggestions for these babies are similar in style.

So far he loves

India
Cherry?? Yes really
Dakota
Indiana
Blossom (though obviously not with cherry is what he'd follow this up with)
Teddy
Saskia
Alaska

I like

Madeleine
Florence
Isabella
Sophia
Elizabeth
Katherine
Victoria

So as you can see our styles are worlds apart, he thinks my choices are boring and "done to death" I think his are downright strange for a child.

I know I should have expected this considering his daughters name but I just thought maybe that was more his ex than him.

FWIW while he is comfortably off, his daughter attended a state school in the north as will our children so will likely not be surrounded by equally, interesting? Names.

Am I being unfair are some of his names useable? Any ideas that could bridge our Grand Canyon sized gap in styles? (gosh if I say that to him he will no doubt add Arizona to the list!)

Indigo instead of India ? I prefer his names if I'm being totally honest but my two adult children have REALLY unusual names and they love having very stand alone names . It's always tough choosing and your names are pretty but very run of the mill.
Good luck on your twins! How exciting

jellytots18 · 08/09/2023 11:33

Congratulations!

My brain went straight to Savannah

Sorry I can't think of anymore, I'm interested on what you choose though! Keep us posted 😃😃

MiniEggsAllYear · 08/09/2023 11:33

I much prefer your husbands list to yours! Whilst the names in your list are totally inoffensive, he's right, they are a bit boring.
Maybe some more classic ones that might be a bit more out there:

Francesca with the NN Frankie
Olive
Ottilie
Margot
Tamsin
Cleo
Eliza
Celeste
Maeve

Take one from each list for each girl ..

Saskia Madeleine
and
Victoria Blossom

India Madeleine or India Elizabeth
and
Katherine Alaska

MsOverrated · 08/09/2023 11:19

I wouldn't normally comment on this but my stepdaughter is also called China and I think it is a gorgeous name that very much suits her. I've asked my husband if he remembers any other contenders to see if they would suit your taste he mentioned

  • Blair
  • Scarlett
  • Cassie/Cassia
  • Maya
  • Alicia

Perhaps something Savannah would suit both of you? Or Sienna?

@ParrotPaula
My daughter is called Cherry, yes, really. It was my DH's idea and it grew on me. Her middle name isn't Blossom or Pie but might have been if my DH was Jamie Oliver.
Anyway your name choices are so much better than your DH's, excepting the Cherry.

I met a woman with a daughter called Cherry. Cherry Ada.

AdaColeman · 07/09/2023 20:27

I really like Saskia, but none of his other choices. Blossom especially would get the thumbs down, unless he was hoping she would have a career as a burlesque dancer.

Your name choices are much nicer, though Isabella and Sophia are immensely popular and have been for years.
Some ideas...
Aphra
Dido
Pandora
Paloma
Dulcie
Jocasta

Corinna
Marguerite

craigth162 · 07/09/2023 20:00

KirstenBlest · 07/09/2023 19:56

DH:
I really like Saskia.
I don't like any of the others

OP:
I like Elizabeth, Katherine and Victoria, but they'll get shortened.
Madeleine - will be Maddie
Florence - not keen
Isabella and Sophia are overused

GolgafrinchamB · 07/09/2023 19:14

Tell him he can’t possibly have three daughters named after places, it will look like the only thing he’s ever read is an atlas.

I was at school with a Geraldine (quite grand, very nice family) nicknamed Cherry. Just because of the sound, I think. Its a tree with exceptionally pretty blossom and also very sweet, tasty fruit. Nothing not to like,,,

Dakota = the name of some Native American peoples. DEEPLY. DEEPLY disrepectful to call a child of a different heritage that.

Indiana = literally 'the home of ""Indians"" - ie of the peoples who Europeans massacred, conquered and turned off their homeland.

Is your DP some kind of Trumpist white supremacist??

FoodFann · 07/09/2023 19:00

India and Sophia are nice together, have matching endings but different sounding names

continentallentil · 07/09/2023 18:58

Well Saskia is perfectly nice - could you live with that ?

Saskia and Sophia - you get one each.

Bey · 07/09/2023 18:09

Adelaide and Florence are beautiful sound nice together and lots of nn options I hope your husband goes with them.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 07/09/2023 17:13

Didn't Katie Hopkins once call people stupid when they name their children after places - despite having a DD herself called India?!

Appleofmyeye2023 · 07/09/2023 16:56

In response to his choices
India - does he want to imprint an image of a country that treats its women and girls with such violence and degradation ? Really? One for patriarchy
Cherry?? Yes really hmm, doesn’t he realise “ taking her…”
Dakota - has he been there? Really? Flat, endless grain and casinos? Nothing romantic about that
Indiana - god in heaven, I worked for company based in Indianapolis for 39 years, we’re talking bible bashing, mid west conservatism, home of pence, and all the right wing anti abortion, gun slinging, capital punishment views you could want.

Blossom (though obviously not with cherry is what he'd follow this up with) - least bad but too twee …sounds like a donkey or cow frankly

Teddy - historically a boys name short for Edward. Ok, if it was a nick name, but not as a female first name
Saskia - ok, not that original though
Alaska - as in baked Alaska, or just freezing cold,

what’s with his obsession with USA state names- send him on a road trip op, but leave his daughters out of his misguided devotion to an idealised version of USA. it’s the equivalent of calling his daughters Cotswold, Yorkshire (Yorkie of short?), or Rutland. Why would he not consider that, ask him? 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦‍♀️🙄

CoffeeBeansGalore · 07/09/2023 16:30

One classic name (your taste) paired with one of his style. ie:

Eden Victoria
Sienna Madeleine
Verity Elizabeth
Madison Elise
Pheobe Saskia
Verona Isabelle

Diospyros · 07/09/2023 16:24

Saskia is a perfectly lovely and quite normal name. How about Saskia and Ottilie?

India is lovely but a bit problematic.

It looks like he likes unusual names and you like more classic, very feminine names. How about looking at Shakespearean names, unusual Biblical names, Ancient Greek or Roman names or French names? You might find some common ground there - unusual enough for him but not in the place/noun names category that he likes and you hate.

Aquamarine1029 · 07/09/2023 16:24

Waiting for the DailyFail to pick this up in 3...2...1...

Wiii · 07/09/2023 16:20

I would get this deleted.

dikwad · 07/09/2023 16:19

Can't you have a Theodora and call her teddy? Although I really like Teddy!
