Keira Willow…

Finally found something DH and I both like but would appreciate any opinions. Thank you 😃

@Mirabai Dumbclucks? I really wouldn't say not knowing how all Irish named are pronounced makes a person dumb! I presume you know how to pronounce all non English names then regardless of where they are from?
Yes, now I know, I would pronounce it correctly but my point was just that lots of people won't know so the child will have to correct all those not as intelligent as you. If the OP is happy with that then fine, it wouldn't bother me but its simply something to consider. And I personally still prefer the look of it spelt with a K

No I don’t, but I don’t assume that’s the point. It’s not difficult to ask people how their name is pronounced. Some Irish names are pronounced differently in different areas - so you’d still have to ask the person just as you would with Helen-a/Helayna etc.

KirstenBlest · 06/09/2023 15:14

oh, actually, if it was Spanish wouldn't it need an accent on the first i to be said like that?

KirstenBlest · 06/09/2023 15:02

I'd guess Mirabai was Mirra Buy, and maybe Spanish or something.

Ciara, Chiara and Clara look quite alike and I've heard someone misread Ciara as Clara.

Frazzledmum123 · 06/09/2023 14:54

@KirstenBlest Agree completely. But apparently Mirabai is better than that

KirstenBlest · 06/09/2023 14:33

@Frazzledmum123 , it's nothing to do with intelligence, To know that Ciara is pronunced Kee-ra, you'd either need to know it was Irish, or to have been told that was how it was pronounced.
I only knew because I was familiar with the name Ciaran

As an English person, I would see Ciara and pronounce it Kee-ara. I can see I'm obviously wrong and lots wouldn't but I think if you are planning on it being pronounced Keh-ra then the OPs way is much clearer
Both are lovely names and I personally prefer it spelt with a K

There’s quite a strong move now away from the phonetic spelling of Irish names for the dumbclucks.

Now you know you would pronounce it correctly.

Mirabai · 06/09/2023 12:46

I know an English born Ciara, which they say Kee-ara

Well then they spelt it wrong. Ciara = Keera, Chiara = Kee ara.

Irish posters: would you pronounce Ciara the same as Keira Knightly is generally pronounced?

I know an English born Ciara, which they say Kee-ara .

I'm Irish and Ciara is said the same as Keira.

I think the Italian name Chiara is Kee-ara.

MollsDolls · 05/09/2023 09:26

Are you going to call her Keira Willow or is Willow her second name? I think it's nice but a bit of a mouthful if you are going to use both names. Just my opinion.

What a lovely choice of name, I work in education and sometimes we get some interesting names so when people choose something simple and beautiful it always gets a thumbs up however I'm not trying to put down the more individual choices, it would be a boring world if everyone liked the same things...enjoy your baby xx

SkaneTos · 04/09/2023 22:04

Lovely names, very pretty!

StripeK · 04/09/2023 22:00

As others have said, the important thing is that you and your partner like the name.

A few checks I always did on our shortlists is check the first name and surname sound good together, that their initials won't spell anything odd or rude, and that you are happy with the meaning of the names.

I also personally am not a fan of 2 long names, or 2 one syllable names (so we vetoed Anastasia Elizabeth, and also wouldn't have gone with Jade Rose for example) but this is just my personal feelings, and Keira Willow is perfect there as both two syllables.

BeMoreBarbie · 04/09/2023 21:22

I don't know if it's my age but Ciara would be pronounced like the singer for me... sea airer so I wouldn't advise it but young people that would be your babies age may not have this problem? Teachers will.

Lovely Mamés otherwise.

Maltaw · 04/09/2023 21:17

Lovely name. I prefer the K spelling. It makes it easy to pronounce for me. The Willow part of the name is a bit irrelevant as nobody ever uses their middle name apart from new parents.

DNLove · 04/09/2023 12:45

Prefer Ciara, your child's nickname will be Kiwi!

Snugglemonkey · 04/09/2023 12:41

It looks misspelled to me. Much prefer Ciara.

Chattygirl123 · 04/09/2023 12:39

Love both. I'm Irish but I don't mind the spelling either Ciara or Keira. I knew a child hers was spelt Kira. Another option although I'd prefer the Irish spelling than it.

Katy123456 · 04/09/2023 12:32

It's lovely, we thought about the same but went slightly different.

Think about the spelling of Keira - we use that version but always have a back of the mind feeling that I should have gone with a slightly different spelling.

RoadLess · 04/09/2023 09:46

Fine, but as Ciara. I also think Willow sounds slightly wobbly as a middle name, but agree with a pp, that how Ciara/Keira sounds with your surname is the important bit.

CoteDOpale · 04/09/2023 09:46

I like it, and I agree most people will know the name through Keira Knightley.

I appreciate Ciara being the traditional Irish spelling, but in England you’d be subjecting her to a lifetime of correcting people. I think a lot of people would say some variation of See-ah-ra, Key-ah-ra or See-air-a.

KirstenBlest · 04/09/2023 09:40

What does Keira Surname sound like? Middle names aren't used much.

TiredMummma · 04/09/2023 08:36

Nice names separately but don't like them together - however my opinion doesn't matter! Call your child what you want
