Identical twin boys

Dramatic · 28/08/2023 23:04

We have recently found out we have identical twin boys on the way. We already have 2 girls

Emmie Francesca
Meredith Rose

I like the idea of both names starting with the same letter but I'm not averse to different letters. Our surname is one syllable and starts with a C.

Any ideas very welcome!

I'm an identical twin and would strongly advise not to give them the same initial or even similar-sounding names. There are certainly advantages to being a twin (readymade best friend for life for one!) but the main disadvantage IMO is the sense of trying to establish an individual identity, and not be known as 'the twins'. I think similar sounding names won't help them be seen as individual people.

I know sisters with the same first letter (not twins) and the doctor got confused about their medication!

I always think the best think the best way to name twins is to give them completely different names that sound nice together and are of a similar ‘feel’ - basically not Horatio and Kaidyn or William and Abdullah!

Owen and Finley
Asher and Ronan
Evan and Rowan
Alistair and Percival nn ‘Percy’
Arthur and Luca
Felix and Miles
Jasper and Maxwell
Russell and Fraser
Atticus and Elias

Edited

These are lovely

Spudlet · 29/08/2023 17:59

DH and SiL have similar names (obviously the male and female versions). And the same surname. It’s not unheard of for them to receive one another’s emails… Would be even worse with twins - don’t do it to them!

Don’t do the same letter- the bank mixed mine up just with the same surname, address and date of birth! We did firstborn had a letter later in the alphabet than the second born. And alternate which you say or write first so they aren’t always x and y. Also “the boys” is much better than “the twins” so they aren’t always half of a set. And don’t dress them the same!!

Azurebird · 29/08/2023 17:42

Giving twins (and higher order multiples) names starting with the same letter not only makes it much easier to mix them when talking to them, can also mess up things like credits records when they get older.

Thanks to all who have pointed out the problems with giving them the same first initial, I hadn't fully considered the long term with that 🤦

Alexander and Laurence (Alex and Laurie)

Hector and Magnus

Edward and William

FatCatatPaddingtonStation · 29/08/2023 11:29

Christopher (nn Kit) and Edward would be my choice. Kit and Ed/Ned/Ted

KirstenBlest · 29/08/2023 10:37

Don't give them names starting with the same letter. They will be sharing a birthday, will look almost exactly the same, and will be sharing a lot of other things.

I'd pick two different names but with a same feel.
Something like George and Henry, Michael and David, Arlo and Ezra or Oscar and Leo.

Definitely not something like Albie and Alfie.

Don't give them names starting with the same letter, it will lead to a lifetime of not knowing who a letter is for, of banks confusing accounts and so on.
We have 3 of us starting with the same letter, and it's really annoying!

DriveInSaturday · 29/08/2023 09:23

Don't give them the same initial. I know the second initial will be different, but the same initial and same birthday could lead to confusion with officialdom, as well as making it harder for people to remember who is who.

I'd also suggest avoiding rhyming names, or ,names that are very similar. It makes it harder for people to learn which child is which, as above. Plus there's the added twist of having your name pronounced wrongly just so that it's obvious who they mean. For example Paul-INE and Paul-A. (I don't want to give actual examples although I've come across lots of rhyming twins while working with children.)

Ozziedream · 29/08/2023 09:02

Don’t give them same initials : with the same date of birth it’s a recipe for mix ups with passenger manifests, council tax, bank statements etc etc …

Another vote to avoid gimmicky matching same letter names, they're separate individual people.
