Will Robin (f) be bullied?

Adviceneeded9 · 26/08/2023 23:19

We are expecting a little girl and have always loved the name Robin (spelt with an I not Y) but have started to have doubts and not sure if it’s the hormones or not!

Would she be submitted to a lifetime of ‘where’s Batman’ and ‘red breast’ jokes?

We both love the name but don’t want to set her up for a lifetime of bullying. Am I over thinking this?!

Thank you so much for all your responses and great to hear such positive replies! You’ve really helped ease my worries and glad to hear I am overthinking it haha! (I was bullied about my name and so have a real fear about it!)

We still have a bit of time but Robin is definitely at the top of the list at the moment. Would love to hear any other suggestions you may have?

So what? It'll give her an advantage in getting jobs, if anything.

How?! 😂

ShortColdandGrey · 27/08/2023 13:49

My daughter is called Robyn. She hasn't been bullied because of her name so far, but she would also love the batman association.

MsFogi · 27/08/2023 13:46

Totally irrelevant but the most beautiful girls in my school was called Robin 😀- absolutely stunning! No one every thought about making fun of her name.

octoberfarm · 27/08/2023 13:45

It's a beautiful name and I think (kindly) you might be overthinking it a little. Go for it!

weebarra · 27/08/2023 13:43

I know a couple of young female Robins, I much prefer this spelling as names with a Y instead of I feel a bit 80's to me.

petermaddog · 27/08/2023 13:39

67yr old robin here 1960s abit of crap for batman but gone by 1970

I’d go with the Y spelling. Why wouldn’t you?
Written down there’ll always be a presumption that she’s male.
So easily avoided.

Because the Robin spelling is much nicer, the opinion held by many

My friend Robin is 59, I think it was more usually Robyn when she was born but it’s never been an issue for her. It’s a lovely name.

ciakace · 27/08/2023 11:41

Nope ! Know multiple Robyn’s around 15-25 and none of them have ever been bullied. Don’t know a robin though, but it’s the same name.

It's a diminutive from of Robert. Why not call her Roberta and use Robin as a family nickname? Then she'll have the choice when she grows up.

Why call her Roberta if she is only ever going to be known as Robin? Roberta isn't a particularly attractive name. Robin could always go as Bobbi or Robbi if she liked. Berta is awful.

Fifipop185 · 27/08/2023 10:53

We have a Robyn in the family, she's a young adult now and has had a few comments of "where's Batman?" from the older generation over the years. She just gave a very withering smile and walked away. No-one her age has ever made comments. She's know as Rob or Bobby mainly.

Marcipex · 27/08/2023 10:26

Robin is lovely, Roberta is awful.

bluebellart · 27/08/2023 10:23

I don't think Batman is a particularly big cultural reference among kids these days.

Surely it can also just be after the bird, like plenty of other nature names...

Toomuchtrouble4me · 27/08/2023 09:11

Robin is lovely. I don’t like the Y, it’s a bit too American, trying too hard.
I did used to work in a school where one of the governors was called ‘Robin Banks’ real name, humourless chap.
but so long as your surname isn’t Banks or Atill (or Hood) then you’ll be fine.
Female Robin in DS3 class - never had any issues.

DCINightingale · 27/08/2023 09:06

Absolutely lovely name. We would have picked it for DD but it didnt go with our surname at all. I think it's a beautiful name for a girl, spelt in not yn

Fallulah · 27/08/2023 09:05

I’ve taught a lot of Robins (always girls and usually with the y) and never heard any Batman comments.

Robinbuildsbears · 27/08/2023 09:04

I absolutely did get that type of bullying because of my name. It was unusual enough that everyone in the school knew of me, and that carried over between schools. I also had a masculine last name so was frequently mistaken for a boy on registers which didn't help with bullying.

However, that was during the noughties, so there's a pretty good chance that it wouldn't be especially unusual anymore, and possibly that bullying styles are different now. People can be bullied for all sorts of things, so choosing a more common name might not make a difference anyway.

As an adult I think I suit my name and couldn't imagine being called anything else. So if you are set on it then I say go for it.

Yourebeingtooloud · 27/08/2023 09:02

Definitely overthinking. Teasing about names isn’t a thing that happens like it used to - names in general are much more diverse so children are used to far more variety than they used to be.

kezziegrey · 27/08/2023 08:59

I know three female Robyns and two male Robins, never heard anyone say anything negative or Batman related about their names.

donkra · 27/08/2023 08:59

Actresses Robin Tunney and Robin Wright are both over 50. Girls have been named Robin for a long time.
