Gabriel is a great name. The best by far (I think) from your list.

MissingMoominMamma · 26/08/2023 15:15

I know two Mateos, both shortened to Teo.

Love it!

Hazelnut9 · 26/08/2023 15:15

I love Gabriel. I also think Diego and Mateo are nice, and as they’re clearly Spanish names, the pronunciation would be closer to how they should be I think? Whereas Gabriel and David are also English names and I’m not sure how similarly they’re pronounced in Spanish? I think Bruno is out because all the children at school will know the song from Encanto.

Gabriel is my favourite

KirstenBlest · 26/08/2023 14:40

I'd pick a name that is Spanish with a phonetic pronunciation that's the same in both Spanish and English. Can't think of one other than Miguel.
Anything ending in o will not get the spanish -oh (like o in of not the o in no)

Rafael will get said as Raffuh-yell not Raffa-el etc

NamingaBoy · 26/08/2023 13:50

I'm Spanish and grew up in Spain, DH is British and I took his surname when we married so baby will have a British surname but I would really like him to have a Spanish related name. I do worry Gabriel Christopher British surname will not do that as I suppose yes people will not say Gabriel how I would like especially as they will just assume it's my accent.

Diego ok. Depends if the anglicised Dee-ay-gow will bother you

  1. Gabriel - Gab-ree-el or Gay-bree-el?
  2. Bruno - great
  3. Mateo - will get Matteo. Will be anglicised (Mat-ay-o not Mat-eh-oh)
  4. David - Dav-id or Day-vid?

David is the more classic, Bruno the easiest. Gabriel is the only one I don't like

Would say all the dogs here are Archies, Alfie and Rufus, but a friend has a Bruno.

UsingChangeofName · 26/08/2023 13:25

I like David.

cordelia16 · 26/08/2023 13:15

I vote for Mateo.

My faves are Gabriel and David, but the different pronunciations between English and Spanish would put me off.

COPPER3 · 26/08/2023 13:04

Mateo Christopher
Gabriel Christopher

Mumofgirls2017 · 26/08/2023 12:41

Bruno

MarshyMcMarshFace · 26/08/2023 12:39

Is your surname Spanish?
Do you both have Spanish heritage, or is it you or DH?

I like Mateo and Gabriel. Not keen on the others. Love the nickname Teo for Mateo.

That is a cute nickname!

PresentPrincess1 · 26/08/2023 12:24

Bruno has more negative associations for this generation of children due to the films Luca and Encanto.

2pence · 26/08/2023 12:01

Gabriel is lovely.

Not keen on any of the others. Least favourite is Diego because of the Dora the Explorer character and also that it contains the word Die.

BrokenMantra · 26/08/2023 11:56

I like Mateo and Gabriel. Not keen on the others. Love the nickname Teo for Mateo.

Xavier

Too many Xaviers pronounced incorrectly.

We don't talk about Bruno.

So Mateo or Gabriel from you list or

Santiago, Alvaro or Esteban from mine.

continentallentil · 26/08/2023 11:56

Bruno - I like it and unusual
Gabriel - very nice, pretty popular
Mateo - nice, he’ll be called Mat

David - no, because I don’t like Dave
Diego - I don’t think this works especially well in the UK

BungleandGeorge · 26/08/2023 11:50

Not keen on Diego. I like mateo and Gabriel best. I’d presume you were possibly catholic with Gabriel Christopher

pilates · 26/08/2023 11:49

Mateo is my favourite
Gabriel is my least favourite

BananaSpanner · 26/08/2023 11:46

Mateo
Diego
Gabriel
David
Bruno (hate this one)

lljkk · 26/08/2023 11:43

All my kids have boring names so you won't be surprised... my order is (most to least liked)

David, Mateo, Diego or Gabriel, Bruno

If you're after names that work in Spanish & English, I also like the other boring ones, like Luis, Miguel, Marco, Tomás, etc.

nannapat58 · 26/08/2023 11:32

Xavier

Whatsthepoint1234 · 26/08/2023 11:30

Diego - to me it conjures an image of a cool calm surfer

Fivebeanchilli · 26/08/2023 09:00

Diego - I like this but the first thing that springs to mind is Dora the Explorer. And then Maradonna. I do like it though.

Gabriel - I love this. I have a Spanish friend with a ds with this name. She pronounces it the Spanish way and everyone else the English way though. Not sure if that would bother you?

Bruno - no. I think everyone would assume you've named him after Bruno Mars.

Mateo - I think this is gorgeous.

David - lovely. And usual nowadays. But would you want it pronounced the Spanish way (which is nicer imo). Again that could lead to annoyance/confusion.

Mateo is my favourite followed by Gabriel.
