What boy names do you love but are you afraid to use?

Sacha
Nelson
Angelo
Thierry (we're not French)

Thatsshallot1967 · 26/08/2023 15:44

I know of an Olivier and have NEVER heard it ever since - this child is now 17. Mum used to get upset he got called Oliver, which is obviously a nice name. I guess it's French...

One I love is Dante pronounced don-t-ay like Dante's Peak, but can't imagine many would use it.

Another I like is Edison.

Florian and Lysander

Ooh or Taliesin. But I'm not Welsh, nor do I live in Wales, and I already have a child with an unusual Welsh name, so...

I love the look of this, but how do you pronounce it?

I'm not great at getting sounds down in writing but the closest I can get is Tal-YES-in. So with the middle sort of rolled together so it sounds like 3 syllables rather than Tal-ee-es-in, if that makes sense!

Thank you! Love it.

User3735 · 26/08/2023 01:39

Ignatius, Atlas, Sylvester and Woody.

Orphlids · 25/08/2023 20:53

Uther Pendragon. Although I think we would have actually been brave enough to use it, it was only because last DC was born a girl she was spared.

We have a Magnus too, and like a PP, we get a lot of positive remarks on it. I’m glad we went with that one.

I love the name Cnut, but clearly not suitable for an English-speaking country for obvious reasons.

blabbermouth12 · 25/08/2023 20:02

Jethro

margegunderson · 25/08/2023 20:00

Isambard

newbeginnings20 · 25/08/2023 19:58

I know a digby and atticus through work.

Love both names.

Songlines · 25/08/2023 19:55

DelurkingAJ · 24/08/2023 13:14

Toseland (I didn’t even bother as I could see DH’s face and I sneakily agreed it was too much)

I love this, too

Hector.

Was on our list but we weren't brave enough. He definitely isn't a Hector as it turns out anyway Grin. It won't be on the list if we have another boy.

I know 3 little hectors!

oaktable · 25/08/2023 19:52

I like the name Coleman

paulinaghe · 25/08/2023 18:14

VenusClapTrap · 25/08/2023 14:43

Lucifer
Inigo
Darius

There are some fantastic names on here.

Jewelanemone · 25/08/2023 13:11

Mirabai · 24/08/2023 22:02

So I know an Apollo and Oberon (brothers).

Fabulous names!

Mirabai · 25/08/2023 13:07

MarshmaIIow · 25/08/2023 12:34

I knew a German Wolf, short for Wolfgang. No one batted an eyelid.

It’s a very bogstandard German middle-aged name.

LarissaFeodorovna · 25/08/2023 12:38

Anton
Florian
Fabian
Matthias

Samzzz · 25/08/2023 11:13

Zephyr and Buddy are not ‘out there’ names. If anything they are gaining popularity

casualreader2022 · 25/08/2023 10:49

Mine aren't out there but would be for us (unfortunately, as I love them!)

Lysander
Emrys
Felix
Atticus

Love all four and would use if we had a boy but think dh would veto!

I know a child called 'Wolfie' ... fab when you are 9 .. but as a 35 year old ?

This is the crux of the issue with most of these 'out there' names, they either work for a cute baby but would be daft for a grown up man or vice versa.

We found a boys name so much harder to agree on in comparison to a girls name. You either chose a name and there will be six others in the class with the same name or it sounds pretty bonkers. Whereas there seem to be much more choice for girls.
