Loving the Telegraph baby names!

Newbeginnings90 · 23/08/2023 23:21

That telegraph article is brilliant.

Some absolute crackers there.

hopsalong · 23/08/2023 23:10

The poshest people I know wouldn't necessarily have made a birth announcement in the Telegraph.

Their daughters sometimes seem to have nicknames (of the Minty variety) but also often relatively ordinary names:

Jane
Mary
Jessica
Charlotte
Honor
Agnes
Antonia
Rosemary

RosesAndHellebores · 23/08/2023 22:18

Poshest, richest woman I have ever met was called Lois.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 23/08/2023 22:14

The poshest women (titles, land etc) I know are named Pia and Emerald. Make of that what you will.

ChristmasCrumpet · 23/08/2023 22:07

Actual old money/aristocracy are called Emma, Alexandra, Jane, Fiona, Frances/Francesca.

People naming their babies, trying to portray an image (and often looking daft because the lives they lead are not aligned with what they hope to project with the name) go with, Ophelia, Ottilie, Araminta etc

DS went to public school, and the old money/seriously wealthy family boys names were things like Johnathan, Will, Henry and Marcus. There were about ten Hugo's, and a Jago all from the other end of the wealth scale. I know there's a minimum level to afford the fees in the first place, but the more pretentious sounding names all came from the least wealthy families. I appreciate wealth doesn't equal class, but you get what I mean.

Aubrey is a posh boy's name

Girls: Charlotte, Sophia, Louisa, Harriet, Elizabeth, Camilla, Sarah, Alexandra

Often with an unrelated nickname

Oops! I don't know how I forgot we were just doing girl's names!

Definitely not posh.

The Liliana I know could not be more posh. Her family are an old English family related to several kings and queens. On the other side, she is related to two different European royal houses.

CallistaFlockfart · 23/08/2023 21:50

Cilest is the pill.
Celeste is for erectile dysfunction

No, Cialis is for erectile dysfunction not Celeste

CallistaFlockfart · 23/08/2023 21:36

Felicity (Flick)
Ophelia
Clarissa
Charlotte
Phoebe
Harriet
Philippa (Pippa)

Throughabushbackwards · 23/08/2023 21:26

I met the baby daughter of an actual Lord the other day, her name is Mary.

Snugglemonkey · 23/08/2023 20:48

The only aristocratic females I know are Anna, Annie (Anouska), Lily (Liliana), Charlotte, Felicity.

tigpig · 23/08/2023 20:43

The old money families I know tend to be quite understated. These are all from old money families/ landed gentry I know from school/ uni/ work. None would call themself posh but if you want land a Labrador and serious connections these people are the real deal.
Names are quite traditional often biblical. Some mad nicknames though!

Johnathan
Oliver
Edward
Alexander
Felix
James
Richard
Christian

Jane
Anna
Helen
Elizabeth
Jemima
Catherine
Cordelia
Eleanor
Sophie
Georgina
Lucinda

Anne

Cressida
Louise

weebleswobblebuttheydontfalldown · 23/08/2023 20:10

Defo no surnames as Christian names if posh 😂!!

They also tend to shorten a normal traditional name with a posh short version that's not that common such as Edward, to be known as Ned and Henrietta to be known as Etti or Etta.
Even Prince Henry to be known as Harry!!

Twazique · 23/08/2023 20:07

Also a Boudica nn Boo

mauvish · 23/08/2023 20:06

I knew a Euphemia nn Mig.

Effie = Euphemia, doesn't it? Or Ifigenia. Or maybe something else.

Twazique · 23/08/2023 20:04

Euphemia nn Bug

Ahh I haven't been on the pill for many many years.. must have been a Mandela affect memory. That's hilarious though over the ED 😂

Lagershandy · 23/08/2023 19:56

User6761 · 23/08/2023 18:06

Some crackers there - Juno Jay Jenkins; Siblings Flora, Cosima and Rufus; Auberon Percival St John....

OP, this is the perfect source of posh names!

Straight outta Rutshire.

Lagershandy · 23/08/2023 19:53

Back in the 60s there was a family who lived in one of the 'posher' houses and one of the daughters was called Ursula.
This was so unusual round the very working class area where we lived amongst the Annes, Julies, Christine's and Lindas.

If we mentioned her for any reason, we called her Ujar.
Still think of it as a posh name though!

PollyAmour · 23/08/2023 19:41

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 23/08/2023 18:58

I'm pretty sure one of the contraceptive pill brands is called Celeste... 🤣 there's a Yasmin too. Put me off both names for life 😂
