I really love the name Olga but husband thinks it’s too ‘harsh’ but I disagree. I think it’s a beautiful name. Thoughts?

It is harsh in English, it sounds very different in various EE languages.

I'm Eastern European myself and there are many names I like which I'd never use because the pronunciation gets butchered and the name sounds ugly.

SpringSparrow · 24/08/2023 00:14

Gosh I really don’t like it. Sounds really ugly to me. Sorry.

CallieJones · 24/08/2023 00:12

It's not my taste.

Jasperz · 24/08/2023 00:12

I like it, but can see why some people don't. Met an Oda once, which is similar but a little softer.

Also Inga or Elke. Hilda or Heidi.

But perhaps unusual choices depending on your heritage.

Sockmate123 · 24/08/2023 00:10

Not a fan sorry

Love it but do see it as a bit harsh
Can you go against the mumsnet rules and double barrel the first name such as Olga-Marie or something to make it more feminine

There is no name dilemma to which Olga-Marie is the answer..

continentallentil · 24/08/2023 00:05

Yep, v ugly

How about Oona ?

Or Olwen?

raindropsfallingdown · 23/08/2023 23:46

Ahh interesting. Any more opinions?

Hilda. Bloody hell.

ricesalad · 23/08/2023 13:39

I like the similar suggestions of Helga and Hilda!

KirstenBlest · 23/08/2023 13:38

Hilda

TwilightSkies · 23/08/2023 13:36

Ugly! Sounds like a large Viking.

pinksparkly · 23/08/2023 13:36

What about Helga?

ricesalad · 23/08/2023 13:35

I like it

Theoldwoman · 23/08/2023 13:34

I don’t mind Olga , but probably prettier names out there for me.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 23/08/2023 12:09

It’s ugly I’m sorry OP - also very dated. What about:
Anika
Astrid
Olia
All ‘strong’ names but not ugly.

RitzyMcFitzy · 23/08/2023 11:56

I must have anti-g tendencies as Helga and Magda also sound awful to me.

KirstenBlest · 23/08/2023 11:50

Helga seems better and Magda is quite nice. Inga is nice too.
I don't like Orla other than in an irish accent, it seems so nothingy

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 23/08/2023 10:22

I like it

RitzyMcFitzy · 23/08/2023 10:12

I think it's ugly too I'm afraid. Reminds me of boggle and ogle.

RuthW · 23/08/2023 09:51

It's an ugly name

Weefreetiffany · 23/08/2023 09:28

Absolutely beloved in Eastern European countries where the pronunciation of the “g” is softer than in English, more like OlgKa as one syllable no oL-Ga like in English.

it’s a bit old fashioned and I would only use if you have Eastern European or Russian heritage

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/08/2023 09:18

I don't like it, sounds like vulgar and the spelling reminds me of Ogre!

What about Orla? Sounds much nicer.

quietnightmare · 23/08/2023 09:13

Love it but do see it as a bit harsh

flowers789 · 23/08/2023 09:03
