Is this trend from Margot Robbie? They're bloody everywhere.

I always think of Margot Tenenbaum. I know a few people from my art school/hipster circles who named their children after the character about 20 years ago.

Margaux is the most common spelling in France these days. It isn’t a ‘unique’ spelling

Yes, but how very dare those forriners spell their names ooniquely 🙄

PresentPrincess1 · 20/08/2023 14:29

The Barbie Movie will have a big impact on names.

indyocean · 20/08/2023 08:12

It's in fashion again

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/08/2023 07:31

It got very popular in my area about 10 years ago - the playgrounds were full of little Margots and Dorothys and Violets and Irises. I think it's very cute!

I met a baby Margaux lately 😬

I think once you’re in Oonique naming territory, you know there’s over-saturation of the name.

Margaux is a name, not a so called unique spelling.

Margaux Hemingway was named after the wine. She was an actress/model with a tragic story and Ernest Hemingways grand daughter.

Margot is a nice form of Margaret though Robbie is as cute.
Barbie or Barbra or Barbara too.

OilOfRoses · 19/08/2023 23:17

I knew a Margo at school. Spelled like that - Margo. It's not a name I like but we can't all like the same names.

Margot was out of fashion for a long time and now it's suddenly catapulted back into popularity. Perfect demonstration of a trendy name imo

Margot was getting popular over a decade ago when I was choosing a name for dc1. It was on my shortlist. It’s hardly sudden. I don’t think it’s top ten popularity levels though (I haven’t checked so happy to be proved wrong). ‘Trendy’ seems a bit over-egging it.

I think people take exception to the word 'trendy' as they think it implies a name is a bit naff and nouveau. It just means it's currently fashionable.

Margot has climbed the naming charts with some speed in the last decade. It's a trendy name.

@Thewallsof I think you're the one looking a bit daft here 😂

Try having a cuppa and put your feet up? My thread wasn't intended to knock you off balance

Are the babies a few weeks old? If not I doubt it's from her influence Barbie has only been out a few weeks.

Also top tip, just say what you want to say to start with. Which was probs something like, I'm so much better than everyone because I hate basic trendy names, whya re all these morons calling their kids the same thing. Disingenuous posts like your op fool no one and just make you look daft.

Yes, my first thought was also of the Chalet School triplets, especially as I’ve met a Margot, a Constance, and a Helena over the past few years at baby groups/ toddler groups/ school 😀

Margot Maynard was a psycho.

CurlewKate · 19/08/2023 21:46

You can't see that many-there are a lot of babies and only about 1000 Margots!

MotherOfCrocodiles · 19/08/2023 21:43

I thought it was having a revival because of princess Margaret in The Crown

I've never come across the other two! Constance was my favourite cousin's name in religion (she was a nun; she was Sister Constance) and Helen (without the a) is my mother's name. Both beautiful names IMO. I guess it just depends what floats your boat.

At least Margot has a pretty meaning.

Me too. It's cringe as fuck.

I think it's part of the fashion for old-fashioned names? Lots of little girls called things like Martha or Florence. Margot/Margaret feels like the same era. I've got to admit my first association is Joey Bettany's triplets!

I disagree with a PP that it sounds less nice with a Germanic pronunciation. IMO 'mar-go' sounds a bit like a budget supermarket. Margot with a t is more elegant.
