My husband hates every name!!

Dh is driving me loopy with his lack of flexibility on names. We are expecting a boy in two weeks and we still don’t even have any names we both like. Names we have are as follows:
Ollie (ambivalent but we don’t like it)
Jordan (I hate but dh likes)
Every name I suggest dh hates, the only name he’s come up with is Jordan. Dh likes gender neutral names which I don’t mind but I want something masculine sounding.

Get one of those name apps that match you

Jacoby nn Obie?
Jacoby is Jack-oh-bee

You can’t call him Jordan, or just Ollie really.

Gender neutral/ish

My daughters go to private school and I can assure you that the pupils there have a wide variety of names and are from very different backgrounds. We are not all ‘jolly hockey sticks yacht club’ types! Also, the school is certainly not going to overlook your application because of a name….if you can pay the fees that’s all that matters.

Almahart · 19/08/2023 14:53

I'd just use Jacob if you both like it - as pp has said, unless it's the baby's sibling it's fine to use it again

saffronsoup · 19/08/2023 14:37

Other gender neutral names used for boys that would work at private school

Blake

Riley

Rowan

MerryChristmasToYou · 19/08/2023 14:32

@ImNotAMermaid , the cartoon character is Obelix

NameChange30 · 19/08/2023 14:24

OK, so he likes Jordan and Obelisk (!) but he also likes Rowan and Jacob, which are normal, nice names.

Ask him to write a list of at least 10 names that he likes. You do the same. Then compare lists. There must be at least one name that you will both like.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 19/08/2023 14:19

Obelisk must be a joke…
If he’s serious what about just Obie or Oberon?
Suggestions:
Morty
Gabe
Deacon
Abner
Artie

Enko · 19/08/2023 00:16

I quite like Obie..

What about
Sonny
Conrad
Bertram (Bertie)

DiaNaranja · 18/08/2023 23:54

ImNotAMermaid · 18/08/2023 21:38

Juggernaut was my genuine reaction to the suggestion Obelisk as well pp. He’s just told me he likes Jacob (I do too) however we can’t use it as it’s a close relatives name!

I know a Jakob who goes by Kobi, do you think he may like that?

I think this is the issue, dh wants something different while I’d be happy to call ds Sam if I’m being quite honest!

pick something normal that isn't too used, Dominic, Victor, Patrick, Saul

Jordan seems really dated to me, although I quite like Jody for a boy. I like those unisex names on boys. Sasha, Jody, Kim, but only for a boy.

ImNotAMermaid · 18/08/2023 21:14

Dh has also suggested Obelisk nn ‘Obie’ but I think it sounds ridiculous!! I don’t want to name my baby after a comic character or a stone monument!!

I like Obie short for Oberon

Honestly just don't think it. You both clearly want 'out there' names... just invent one and hope that your child will be happy with it..

DH seems to, OP is more worried of they'd let a "Jordan" into the right kind of school

Jordan is one of the most gender neutral names I've heard!
Tell him this crazy American lady on mumsnet says you're to name him Oliver Neil.

KayEmAy · 18/08/2023 22:45

New rule - no free vetoes. If he hates a name and wants to veto one as an option, he needs to present another in it's place. :)

If he doesn't, that name stays as an option. Pretty simple, if he doesn't help name the baby, he doesn't get to name the baby. lol

For example you are not a fan of Jordan, you can veto it and another forward. One of the many names you probably have mentioned. With two weeks left I would recommend using an actual physical board. With note cards or a chalkboard, sometimes looking at them helps decide a feeling, and it will help keep track of ones you BOTH like.
