Rank my Baby boy names

Birdiboo · 16/08/2023 21:36

It’s just over 2 weeks until we find out the gender of this little one but I like to be organised and know a name early on.

I like soft and gentle sounding boys names if that makes sense. For some reason I also really seem to like names with the letter “O” in them somewhere.

So far my boy names are…

Arlo (partner really likes this and is hard to please when it comes to names but I’m not sure)
Oscar
Theodore (Theo/Teddy)
Matthew
Noah (not convinced yet)
Ralph
Heath
Harry

Can you think of anymore along these lines that you think I’d like?

My daughter is Molly 💕

We also have a Molly and are expecting a boy! Currently our top contenders are Kit or Harris.

We also like Finlay, Rory, Ralph (probably going to be a middle name due it being a family name). I also love Henry but that has been vetoed. I do like Milo/Miles but I am not sure about both children having the same initial.

Moomoo36 · 18/08/2023 12:03

I'm really not a fan of Arlo. To me it just screams we are middle class and want everyone to know it. They type who would loud parent in a play park and make sure everyone knows their children eat Hummus and olives.

Matthew is lovely. Well known and classic so that you are not having to worry about spellings but not very commonly used at the moment.

tulipsunday · 18/08/2023 09:31

Rowan perhaps as another suggestion? Soft and gentle sounding and has an o..

Fourlegsandatail · 18/08/2023 09:29

Arlo - love it but it’s too popular right now and will date badly I think
Oscar- meh
Theodore (Theo/Teddy) - meh
Matthew - boring
Noah - really dislike
Ralph - like
Heath - love this
Harry - nice but dull

Daffodilwoman · 18/08/2023 09:23

I think Oscar goes best with Molly.
I like Ralph pronounced Raif but you will get people pronouncing it as Ralf.

Crossstich · 17/08/2023 14:01

Arlo is my favourite from your list and it sounds nice with Molly

KirstenBlest · 17/08/2023 13:58

Zac is OK, but I don't like the Zach spelling. My mind reads it as Zatch.

Coronationstation · 17/08/2023 13:54

Arlo - too trendy, i don't think it will age well
Oscar - nice but I don't think it's very "soft"
Theodore (Theo/Teddy) - nice but very of the moment, every other baby and toddler seems to be a variation of these names at the moment
Matthew - nice but not sure about Molly and Matthew together
Noah - nice but popular
Ralph - I don't like Ralph and think the pronunciation as Rafe is worse
Heath - awful
Harry - nice name but don't think it flows well as Molly and Harry. Henry maybe works better?

Molly and Zach
Molly and Arthur
Molly and Hugo
Molly and Thomas
Molly and Owen

KirstenBlest · 17/08/2023 13:43

Molly is great.

Arlo - can't see any appeal
Oscar - ok but don't really like it
Theodore (Theo/Teddy) - dislike it. Theo overused, Teddy too faddy
Matthew - great but Molly & Matthew a bit too matchy.
Noah (not convinced yet) - No
Ralph - Raif or Ralf? No
Heath - will be Heef. Otherwise ok
Harry - ok

Matthew is my favourite, then Harry, but Oscar probably goes better. Heath is nice but seems more of a surname.

Just to add another to the mix, what’s everyone’s thoughts on Zachary? Probably shortened to Zach?

One of my favourite names...would have called my second DC that if she had been a boy

Mumofgirls2017 · 17/08/2023 10:03

Arlo (partner really likes this and is hard to please when it comes to names but I’m not sure)
Oscar
Theodore (Theo/Teddy)
Matthew
Noah (not convinced yet)
Ralph
Heath
Harry

harry
theodore
ralph
heath
oscar
arlo
matthew
noah

that order

i think Oscar, Arlo, or Harry go best with molly

Smashingwatermelons · 17/08/2023 08:34

Molly and Zach go together beautifully.

I also really like Otis, which works well with Molly too.

17caterpillars1mouse · 17/08/2023 08:28

Milo
Nico
Otis
Micah
Josiah
Jamie
Joah
Joby
Elliott

I think all these have a softer sound

The Molly I know has a sibling who is Joe (so that's the "o" sound sorted)!

CallMeBettyBoop · 17/08/2023 01:01

Ralph (pronounced 'Rayfe'

fullbloom87 · 17/08/2023 00:56

Arlo (partner really likes this and is hard to please when it comes to names but I’m not sure) don't like it. Too common now. Sounds pretentious.
Oscar* I like it the most*
Theodore (Theo/Teddy)* I like it*
Matthew* it's my brothers name so I like it*
Noah (not convinced yet)* nah too common and boring now*
Ralph sounds like a dogs name
Heath not keen
Harry* not keen*

Firefighter22 · 17/08/2023 00:40

Rory
Lorcan
Ira
Ivo
Toby
Tobin
Cory

Theoldwoman · 17/08/2023 00:21

Oscar is not a soft name imo.

Anyhow, I like Theo the best. Ralph is terrible.

Suggestions:

Jeremy
Adam
Dane
Wade
Trent
Julian
Kurt
Luke
Elias
Torin
Reuben
Christian
Matthias

Daisybuttercup12345 · 16/08/2023 23:41

I love Matthew but I think Theo goes better with Molly.

LauderSyme · 16/08/2023 23:37

Of your list I like Heath best. Am neutral on all the others. Afraid I don't like Ralph at all but Raef is nice.

Are Cosmo and Atho too weird?

Fivebeanchilli · 16/08/2023 23:15

Arlo (partner really likes this and is hard to please when it comes to names but I’m not sure) - I like it, don't love it. Prefer Otto I think
Oscar - I like this. All the Oscars I know are teenagers and are all lovely.
Theodore (Theo/Teddy) - this is one of my favourite names but it's so so popular now that I wouldn't use it now.
Matthew - I really dislike this. Something about the th sound in the middle makes it seem really wet to me.
Noah (not convinced yet) - boring. So popular
Ralph - this would be my favourite if pronounced Rafe but then I would spell it like that too. I'm not keen on the Ralf pronunciation and it reminds me too much of that horrible book, Lord of the Flies
Heath - not keen. Sounds slebby.
Harry - lovely, classic.

I would go for Rafe followed by Oscar or Harry with Arlo closely following... But Theodore would be second if you don't care about popularity...

BrokenMantra · 16/08/2023 23:14

I love Oscar and Ralph (as Rafe). Matthew is OK.

Ivo, Oisin, Thomas, George, Joseph

Birdiboo · 16/08/2023 23:08

@ODFOx we are both Northern Irish. To be honest Heath was a spur of the moment add in lol.

My OH actually really likes the traditional pronunciation Raif - I’m not sure, I think it sounds a bit harsh or incomplete or something.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I think that Matthew (Matty, Matt) is underused for babies at the moment given that it is such a classic.
To my anglicised ear Arlo is dreadful. (Is it a brand of milk?) but Ivo and Leo would fit with Molly.
Are you both English?
If so I think that Heath is an unusual choice: more popular as a boy's' name in Australia I think where heathland isn't a thing.
Oscar, Harry, Ralph and Noah are fine but not particularly unusual, soft or gentle, though Ralph could be if you pronounce it traditionally Raif, though I suspect that wasn't your intention.
I know two Theo's born in the last month. It's a great name but a bit of a surge right now.
Molly and...
Alfie
Archie
John
Jonathon (Jonty)
Joseph
Jordan
Oliver
Nathan
Myles/Milo
Arthur
Mark
Marcus
Rupert
Robert (Robbie/Bobbie)
