Hello! I’ve narrowed down my girls name list to the below. Please could you rate them in order of preference and try not to be too harsh 😬

Dorie (after my grandmother, partner doesn’t like it though but it’s my fave 😭)
Rosie
Emma
Cassie
Eloise
Sophie

I like the names as they are and wouldn’t be putting longer versions on birth certs.

Personal order of preference -

  1. Sophie - I know it's popular, but for a reason
  2. Emma - classic, lovely in lots of languages
  3. Cassie - sweet, and also kudos on naming your kid what you want and not feeling a pressure to use a formal name you may not like as much
  4. Rosie - I like Rose on it's own more but still cute
  5. Eloise - I also love the nn Wheezie (this may be a US thing lol)
  6. Dorie - I am so sorry, I mean no disrespect to your grandmother at all! I am just not a fan, but think it would be a cute middle name! It is actually one of my best friends middle name :)

for fun, mns I love with your favorites -

Dorie Kate
Dorie Annika nn Dani (throwing it out as a compromise for partner:)

Rosie Morgan
Rosie Renee

Emma Dorie
Emma Eden

Cassie Helena
Cassie Claire

Eloise Austen (little nod to Jane Austen)
Eloise Julia

Sophie Quinn
Sophie Eve

Other ideas I think you may like based on these -

Sienna Dorie
Eden Dorie
Abigail Dorie nn Abby if she likes
Daisy Jane
Belle Marie
Daria Eloise (inspired by Dorie)
Whitney Emma
Olive Emma
Hailey Rose
Sarah Beth
Blaire Ivy
May Madelaine
Josette June nn Jo

What about Dotty/Dottie as a shortened Dorothy. No to Carrie as that has sex in the city references. Emma is nice and classic, Eloise is also lonely and probably less used. Rosie is lovely. There are loads of Sophies.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 16/08/2023 23:42

Love Emma and Sophie.

Birdiboo · 16/08/2023 22:43

I love Dorothy too but sadly would never get this past my partner 😅😭

Dorothy is brilliant

shoopshoopdedoo · 16/08/2023 22:27

Ooh, love Dorothy! I’ve changed my mind - put Dorothy in first place!

Mrsfussypants1 · 16/08/2023 21:45

I love Eloise. Strong dislike of Emma. I know a few Emma's (and Gemmas) qvery common growing uo in the 80s and 90s I don't think of them as classic or aging well unlike Laura.

Birdiboo · 16/08/2023 21:28

Oh and I also should have said that yes, Dorie is short for something; Dorothy.

However, the reason my partner doesn’t like it is because he thinks it’s an “old lady” name so I don’t think I would persuade him by saying we could put Dorothy on the BC instead 😅

Thanks for all your responses everyone.

Some nice comments about Dorie and I’m not giving up on it just yet lol.

I’m also going to add Carrie to my list as I have been thinking about it the past couple of days and think I have fallen in love with it! ❤️

now to think of boy names….

Moveoverdarlin · 14/08/2023 16:43

Rosie
Sophie

Clowninja · 14/08/2023 16:42

Sophie
Emma
Rosie
Cassie
Eloise
Dorie - sorry, it is cute but since Nemo I can foresee everyone thinking she is named after Dory the fish and misspelling her as such her whole life (unless she's going to be introducing herself as "Dorie with an IE not Y" to everyone she meets. Just not worth the faff, definitely a great middle name contender though.

Sunshineclouds11 · 14/08/2023 16:28

Cassie

i work in a labour suite.
eloise is the most u common (and beautiful in mho)
the rest minus dorie are quite common. like u will
have another in the class or close classes at school.
dorie i really don't like for reasons not for mn x

eloise all
the way for me.

DuchessOfSausage · 14/08/2023 10:42

I had five Emma's in my primary class in the eighties. Every other forty something woman appears to be Emma (or Claire, which I've also seen get inexplicable love on MN). Mumsnet is weird; apparently Olivia and Isabel are " too common " or " boring" but Emma, Anna etc are loved. Emma and Anna are such dull names.

In my case, it's because names like Emma and Anna aren't frilly.
Olivia is nice but it's long, and it's lost it's novelty. Isabel is OK but again it is long and I don't like Izzy.

Claire is OK if you sound the r (e.g Scottish or French accent) otherwise it is just a dull sound.

All of these names are popular, but Emma and Anna seem to always be in use. I prefer Ann to Anna, but Anna, Hannah, Annie are fine.

DuchessOfSausage · 14/08/2023 10:31

Dorie - your partner doesn’t like it. Could be a nn for Dorothy, which it lovely?
Rosie - fine, a bit twee
Emma - lovely
Cassie- ok, but better short for Cassandra
Eloise - too much of a mouthful. Will be Ellie
Sophie - lovely but Sophia too popular

evtheria · 14/08/2023 09:12

Emma
Cassie*
Eloise
Sophie
Rosie
Dorie

*I'd keep the Cassandra on certificate though, to give her options when she's order. Had a friend with a similar name situation, and since she's left school has wanted to use the 'full' version but couldn't use it as her parents just gave her the nickname.

Frogmila · 14/08/2023 09:10

Dorie (just out of curiosity is it short for something?)
Eloise
Sophie
Emma
Cassie (I prefer Cassandra)
Rosie

I love Emma (and Emily). Also really like Sophie. They've certainly aged better than Rachel and Laura (half the girls in my year had one or other of those names!)

I'm not keen on Eloise but now I think about it, I think I'm heavily influenced by a right little shit I once knew. It's quite pretty in it's own right!

Cassie is fine, wouldn't chose it but wouldn't pull a face.

Rosie is pretty but I've met 3 under 3 in the last month and a half, if that influences you at all!

Dorie- sounds like Dory, I wouldn't do it. Sounds like Dorrie, I think is cute toddler name..

Dorie is very special, but your partner doesn't like it.
Would Dorie as a second name be acceptable?

Eloise Dorie
Rosie Dorit
Sophie Dorothy
Cassie Dorit
Emma Dorie

Kiwiburgh · 14/08/2023 00:45

I love Eloise then Cassie and Emma.
Not a fan of Dorie sorry :( reminds me of the fish.
