Baby boy name

Kiwiburgh · 12/08/2023 20:04

We have finally agreed on two names for baby boy!
Grant or Findlay
Ds1 has a scottish/ celtic name.
Having such a hard time deciding on a name this time round. I work in a men's prison so as you can imagine this rules out lots of names 🙈
Thanks 😁

@Poorlilthing why comment on this at all if you don't like discussing baby names

I believe i was the first to give my opinion on the name

Guineapiggiesmalls · 14/08/2023 10:39

Sorry to see you’ve dropped the D from your Findlay option! I’m in Scotland, and it feels misspelled/English to spell it Finlay/Finley. With an E is particularly wishy washy. Bring back the D!

Clearly in the minority, but I also like Grant 😂 stick with your original names! See what suits your wee boy when he arrives.

Finley/Finlay is lovely.

Personally I'm surprised by the reaction to Grant, which has always struck me as a very neutral type of name....

Poorlilthing · 14/08/2023 07:18

A difference of opinion about what?! and who’s bickering? 😂

Kiwiburgh · 14/08/2023 07:14

lets not be those people that bicker on forums. Let's just agree we have different opinions.

@Poorlilthing sorry I didn't realise the 2 names I asked opinions on were set in stone.
Thinking of baby names is really exciting and I'm enjoying changing my favourites around .Fair to say it'll probably change again 😅

@Daffodilwoman I imagine lots of Americans would pronounce Fraser like they do on the TV show, the American I work with does 🙈 luckily nz people say it the same as in Scotland.

Some ideas ..
Geoffrey
Flynn
Nicholas
Duncan
Ewart

Daffodilwoman · 14/08/2023 06:23

I must be the only one who dislikes Fraser.I always think of the American comedy. I know that might be a different spelling ( I can’t abide the show ) but that’s where my mind goes. Also knew a Fraser and he was a very unattractive wet lettuce. I would chose the name which suits your surname best.
I also much prefer Nathan out of the 4 names.

Poorlilthing · 14/08/2023 06:15

How did you choose my name mummy?

I started a thread on an anonymous chat forum and despite daddy and I loving two names in particular, no one else did, so we followed the suggestions of the anonymous posters 😂

Kiwiburgh · 14/08/2023 01:10

Thanks for the suggestion everyone.
Our top two names are now Finlay ( newzealanders were pronouncing Findlay wrong) and Fraser.
Now just to wait until he's born and see which he suits 💙

Not Grunt!,

Finley is a great name!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 12/08/2023 23:48

I love Fraser.
Finlay is nice without the D.
Not keen on Nathan or Grant.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/08/2023 23:32

I'd choose Finlay spelling personally
Fraser is lovely

Leapintothelightning · 12/08/2023 23:18

I like Findlay but prefer the Finlay spelling.
I also love Fraser! What about Angus or Fergus?

LizzieBet14 · 12/08/2023 23:08

Fraser ❤️

Babybelles · 12/08/2023 23:02

Bear in mind the vast majority of posters on here are basing their norms around names in England rather than Scotland and it seems there is a massive difference. I posted a list of names (most I know multiple children with the name in Scotland) and people commented such horrible
things saying they were boys names (it was a girls list) or saying had I made them up etc. The Scotland baby names website shows all
the statistics for last year and you can search on the interactive list about different spellings and stuff to get a true representation of each name rather than what someone in England thinks!

Babybelles · 12/08/2023 22:59

Findlay nickname Finn 100%. Im in Scotland and it seems the Findlay spelling used to be more
popular (still love it) but I’m seeing so many Finley’s now

continentallentil · 12/08/2023 22:57

Findlay is nice

Grant is thuggish (probably is because of Mitchell but there you are)

User6761 · 12/08/2023 22:56

In contrast to PPs I love the Findlay spelling, to me it looks the 'correct' spelling (I am Scottish).

Also really like Fraser and Nathan. Not so keen on Grant.

In terms of other Scottish boys names, I like Struan, Euan, Gregor, Ross, Ruairidh...and many more!

arlequin · 12/08/2023 22:51

Fraser!

Not Grant

Busubaba · 12/08/2023 21:38

Grant is horrible.

Finley or Finn is lovely.

LadyGAgain · 12/08/2023 21:37

Fraser is my favourite of your list.
Nathan sounds wet but I like Nate.
Finlay is lovely but drop the 'd'
Grant is just awful. Too close to grunt and gives me images of pigs. Always has (I went to infant school with a boy called Grant, That was over 30 years ago!
