From a Reddit post, not my own.

"While on holidays, I passed by an exposition of portrait from a holiday kids club and couldn't help to write their cute names. It was a club from 4 to 7 and 8 to 12 years old."

We thought about calling pur French/British daughter Garance but decided against it because it is pretty in French but sounds terrible pronounced in English.

Daphnis156 · 15/08/2023 20:37

I used to think that young people's names in France were much less silly than some of the awful names current in England.

Are Loup-Maël, Ivanho and Duc-wang, to quote but a few, really on an official list?

There hasn’t been an official list since 1993. Duc-Wang is almost certainly Vietnamese so wouldn’t have been on that list. Ivanhoé comes from Scott’s novel of 1819 and therefore has the same etymology as Cedric. Loup is unusual but Maël is Breton and a saint’s name.

I'm sorry but the majority of those are hideous.

Loup-Maël
Garance
Duc-wang

🤢

Garance is a flower name, it's the name of the heroine in Les Enfants du Paradis. The English name is Madder, which is rather unfortunate.

midsomermurderess · 15/08/2023 19:41

I love Loïc but doubt it would work here.

Isn't Loup pronounced more like a short Lou ?

Loup = Lou

LaChatte · 15/08/2023 18:03

Kah el ie even

I could have done with this list for inspiration when trying to name my two (franco-british household). Interestingly, neither of my DCs name are on the list.

Some of them I've never heard of, such as "Galatée" and "Titouan", the others are pretty normal. And yes I would expect Kaëlye to be pronounced Kah-el-ie rather than Kylie. I also love Maëlys.

Yeah it's pronounced Kah el ei, which is how you pronounce Kylie in French 😅.
I had a Titouan this year, I struggled to get the final ''an'' right to begin with (kept pronouncing it like the English "an").

Sure but a vomit emoji, really? Also I strongly suspect the poster has no idea how they are pronounced. Loup-Maël for instance is a beautiful soft sounding name, it sounds nothing like 'Loop-Male'.

Yeah , a vomit emoji is a pretty clear indication.

This board is terrible for a certain parochial attitude. Polish names are the worst. You could start a thread asking for thoughts on Patryk or Kacper and wait literal minutes before someone would post sneering at the ‘youneeq’ spellings. There was a thread earlier this year where one poster accused another of making up a class list because it contained two Zuzannas.

It’s not ‘sneering’ to acknowledge that not all names translate well into other languages. Obviously Duc Wang is an example. I live abroad and a lot of British names don’t sound at all nice in the language. I’d not be at all offended if someone were to smirk a bit upon hearing a British name that sounds weird or like something funny in their local language. It’s okay to not pretend to love literally everything from other countries.

Duc Wang will be ?Vietnamese or similar I imagine. Garance isn't to my taste but it's not that unusual. Neither is Maël. MN is dreadful for sneering at foreign names!

I love Garance! Probably because I associate it with Garance Doré who is beautiful, elegant and intelligent.

Some of these are so lovely and they certainly make a change from Sophia, Lily et al.

Hopefully it's only a small proportion of mumsnetters.

Thanks. I did wonder if it was supposed to be said like that, although Gaël isn't pronounced like the word "guile" is it? So I wasn't sure.

Gah-L
There are some weird spellings of non French names. I have taught: Braiyan (Brian), Jayzon (Jason) and Shemsdine (''Like James Dean Madame!'', although Shamesdine is an actual Arabic name).

Were they quite well to do kids?. Some of them seem quite high class names, although I'm out of touch with what's current for kids.
How is Kaëlye pronounced?

Kylie

I am a bit surprised that Mohamed would be a female name (?).

This is no longer true and hasn't been for over 20 years.

Exactly 30 years, in fact. The law was changed in 1993.
