Artemis

What’s the Mumsnet view on Artemis? I love it, but it was met with an instant dismissal from my husband. Does the NASA Artemis project change your view on the name?

I love Artemis! I'm not sure if I'd be brave enough to use it though, but I think its really cool!

Goldbar · 10/08/2023 20:13

Not fond of it personally.

LilyLemonade · 10/08/2023 20:12

Love it, very strong yet feminine. I'd immediately think of the Greek goddess of hunting, not NASA or Artemis Fowl.

KirstenBlest · 10/08/2023 20:06

The aftershave is Aramis.

BigTedLittleTedCardboardBox · 10/08/2023 19:55

Not keen. Artemisia has a better flow and seems more like an actual name, whereas Artemis just seems incomplete and abrupt.

minipie · 10/08/2023 19:54

I like it as a name but it does give a bit of a try-hard impression, to me. Bit like calling your child Persephone or Ptolemy.

rainbowtea23 · 10/08/2023 19:54

My top girl name, currently expecting DS2 not sure if we’ll try for a third yet but if I did have a daughter this would be her name without a doubt. Absolutely love how strong it is.

nocoolnamesleft · 10/08/2023 19:50

Artemis Fowl is the male protagonist in a series of children's books, if that makes any difference.

KirstenBlest · 10/08/2023 19:49

Artemisia plant

Artemis
PersephonePomegranate23 · 10/08/2023 19:39

Athena could be an alternative if you like goddess names.

Or Hera?

KirstenBlest · 10/08/2023 19:37

@MotherOfCrocodiles , the common name wormwood is from its use.
Wormwood Scrubs would sound nicer if it was Artemisia Shrubland or something.

Alloveragain3 · 10/08/2023 19:36

Too much for me. Sounds pompous to my ear and also kind of like a pharmaceutical company

drpet49 · 10/08/2023 19:36

Aftershave isn’t it?

shoopshoopdedoo · 10/08/2023 19:35

I like it a lot but I think it’s too bold for me to consider using. Would be a great middle name. I think the space connection is quite cool.

stickygotstuck · 10/08/2023 19:32

I love it and we almost called DD this. We didn't as for me it's just too full on serious goddess. As did Athena. Felt a bit sacrilegious, to be honest! We discarded several Greek goddesses' names for that reason.

littlemisslozza · 10/08/2023 19:30

I've taught a girl called Artemis and she was often having her name accidentally mispronounced as Armetis. Not by me I hasten to add! Perhaps because people were so unfamiliar with it.

Luana1 · 10/08/2023 19:28

I do really like it, but can you really imagine shouting it across the soft play? May be better for a middle name as I love the meaning. Athena could be an alternative if you like goddess names.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 10/08/2023 19:27

I love it. But I also love Andromeda and Cassiopeia

GingerLiberalFeminist · 10/08/2023 19:27

We loved it, but couldn't see how it would be shortened so have used it as a middle name.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 10/08/2023 19:27

other than that should say.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 10/08/2023 19:26

I don't really like the sound. For the same sentiment, I prefer Diana.

I don't actively dislike it though or attach any connotations than the Greek godess.

Radiodread · 10/08/2023 19:25

I really like it. Strong and not frilly.

Whinge · 10/08/2023 19:23

PurpleChrayne · 10/08/2023 19:21

It sounds like the name of a consortium.

Very ugly sound.

I agree, it sounds like the name of a team on the Apprentice.

PingPowKaPowWow · 10/08/2023 19:22

Makes me think of aftershave
However, if the kid is never addressed as Artemis, or introduced as Artemis, but only as Artie, then it's suddenly 100 percent absolutely fine

faban · 10/08/2023 19:22

I love it
