Classic boy names with sweet nicknames?

Looking for a boy name for baby no2 to go with my DS1 Harry! We like classic and timeless names but I would really like something we can shorten/ derive an affectionate nickname from.

I need to go armed as my DH is a teacher and is a nightmare choosing names with as he associates them with every naughty child he’s ever met! 🤣

So far I’ve got:

James - Jimmy/ JJ (he likes this one but I’m not so keen)
Frederick - Freddie (I like Freddie but not Frederick)
Edward or Theo - Ted/ Teddy

Any suggestions? Thank you!

I have an Isaac who we call Ikey. Now he’s getting a bit older he tends to be Ike more

To me Kit has always been the best shortened version of a serious proper name. With Jonty and Monty close seconds.

How about Wilfred or Alfred for Freddie

Confusion101 · 05/08/2023 20:42

Frederick - Freddie (I like Freddie but not Frederick)

Why would you give your child a name you don't like? If you like Freddie, why not use Freddie. I understand your point as you have a nickname that you like, but if you want an affectionate nickname I think those have to come when the baby is born, rather than be forced.

I'm a teacher so understand the absolute struggle of trying to find a name, but funnily enough, it is as a result of teaching that I was firm the child would be given the name that we wanted to call her (e.g. If we wanted her to be called Lisa all the time, we would call her Lisa, not Elizabeth). I have taught children who absolutely cringe and shudder when their full name is called out on the roll and they have to sheepishly say "actually, I go by Katie not Katherine".

Love the name Freddie, and love the name Harry!
