Hey, which one of these names do you like the most and why? And what kind of girl/woman do you think of when you hear these names? By the way, do you have any suggestions for more youthful and sprightly names? Thanks!

Flora is the Roman goddess of Spring
Persephone the Greek
Hera is the Greek goddess of fertility
Freya the Norse
Liv is a Scandinavian name meaning life
Clara means bright

Of yours I’d go for Tessa - May and Lucy are overdone and I am not mad on April. I think the French Avril is a bit nicer - or a Lucy variation like Lucia or Lucienne

Sandysandwich · 01/08/2023 20:53

April and May especially when the baby is born in those months kind of seems to me like the parents couldn't think of a name so just went with the month, same as June and people named after the saints day in their birthday.

Lucy is nice, sounds quite young to me
I really like Tess and Tessa is even better

CarnelianArtist · 01/08/2023 20:35

I like Lucy May.

I've just always liked the name Lucy. It conjurs up and image of someone calm and kind. May is like a middle name. Tess and April are OK.

Shinytaps · 01/08/2023 20:34

I adore Tessa and Tess. Lucy is a solid choice and makes me think of the awesome Lucy in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Not a fan of month names. April makes me think of the the Ninja Turtles and May makes me think of an old lady.

BUT who cares... go with your fave!

LucyLoopyLu · 01/08/2023 20:31

Obviously I'm a Lucy. It's a very common name in my age group but still a solid choice I think. I didn't like it as much at school as there was always more than one, but it's not been an issue since then, or nowhere near as much as men's names like Tom, Olly or Mark. Don't choose it if you don't like the relevant nicknames (Lu, Lulu, Luce) as people shorten it a lot.

I really like April and Tessa. But it depends how it goes with the surname

I wonder why April, May and June are used as names but not the other months? Imagine being called February.

I actually like January as a name (January Jones!) but wouldn’t like Jan as a nickname. I seriously love the name Tuesday and my baby was born on a Tuesday night. I still kind of wish I’d called her it..!

MumofSpud · 31/07/2023 21:37

My DD would have been called Tess except I can't stand Tess Daley! And it brings back school memories of Tess of the Durbervilles!

Hobbesmanc · 31/07/2023 21:20

Love the name Tess or Tessie. Strong and confident. I'd go for Lucia over Lucy which feels a little twee. June seems to be having a moment. I think Joan is prettier and due a revival.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 31/07/2023 16:58

I know a Tessa and she is a beautiful, kind, warm person so I love the name by association!

Vetoncall · 31/07/2023 16:51

Love Tess or Tessa.

I hate the name Lucy. April is OK but not nearly as nice as Tess. May/Mae is overused as a hyphenated/middle name.

Katiesaidthat · 31/07/2023 12:28

I don´t like shortened names as names so it would be Lucinda, and would call her Lucy. Proper names on birth certificates, like someone said above.

Epicstorm · 31/07/2023 11:28

I like both Tess and Tessa (Tess most) but they both feel like shortened forms of a longer name and I’d want a ‘proper’ name on the birth certificate. Unfortunately I really don’t like Teresa. That’s just me though. You might not agree.

Anothermam · 31/07/2023 11:21

Lucy May

Polzair · 31/07/2023 10:50

I love April. That would be my pick.

miniaturepixieonacid · 31/07/2023 01:09

April - really like it. Only ever met one (a little girl who will now be in her late 20s). I think it's sweet for a child and friendly/happy/genuine for an adult.

May - pretty and old fashioned but seems too much like a middle name to me. Never actually met anyone who has it as a first name though.

Tess - Bit short and plain for me. I prefer Tessa. It's quite elegant though and unusual. I've only ever met one who will also be late 20s by now.

Lucy - much more common than the others but I like it. Timeless and pretty.

I'd definitely choose April.

becarefulofyourheart · 31/07/2023 00:58

Lucy is a sweet name. We had a much-loved boxer dog called Tess, she was a princess amongst dogs and sadly it became synonymous with her so that ruled it out for me but I love it. I think of a thoughtful intelligent woman with a quiet but powerful will. Maybe that’s weird cos the most famous Tess (see above) wasn’t exactly known for these attributes, but I knew the dog first and to me it’s powerful and gently dignified name. Also like Cass and Bess. They’re all popular sheepdog names but if you’re not farmers I don’t know if it matters. Sprightly names…
Romily
Ottilie
Cora
Mireille

Or if you’ve got big balls and like Thomas Hardy… Bathsheba?

elm26 · 31/07/2023 00:52

Lucy is my favourite, my best friend is Lucy and she's the most kind, funny, intelligent person I know so that's probably why I love it so much! I think it's due a comeback!

Don't like April, I've known 2 who have been bitchy and just not very nice.

May is overused as a middle name so not keen.

Tess just reminds me of Tess Daly.

ParisP · 31/07/2023 00:48

Tess is lovely

AnnaNims · 31/07/2023 00:47

I like Tess. April and May are ghastly and Lucy is so twee and wet.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 31/07/2023 00:45

I like Lucy best.

If you're trying to avoid an overly popular name I'd go with April over Lucy though...I love that April is not too common a name, but won't be a problem for people to spell or pronounce!

salamithumbs · 30/07/2023 22:58

I love April and Lucy! I only know one April- never heard anyone call her Ape, but one of her friends does sometimes call her Apricot as a term of endearment 🤣. Think Tess is a bit sad/serious sounding, though I couldn't say why...I think Tessa is much nicer. May just sounds a bit old lady to me, and I think it's worn thin since it's so overused as a middle name!

LizzieBet14 · 30/07/2023 22:53

Tess ❤️

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/07/2023 22:38

I like Tess and May - simple but elegant and underused. I also think they are semi-classic with a kind of romantic vibe- makes me think of Hardy's Tess and May Welland in A of I. Less keen on April and Lucy (April feels less classic somehow and Lucy always has a cutesy sound to me).
