I think of the place, the seat of the High Kings of Ireland. I like it.

Tara

I don't dislike it but I do find it somewhat dated. It's probably unusual among the current generation of children though.

Clytemnestra21 · 29/07/2023 09:59

Beautiful name

Jericha · 29/07/2023 09:20

Love Tara, it was on our shortlist. As was Mara.

Sux2buthen · 29/07/2023 08:46

@TheYearOfSmallThings I'm not really a dickhead that thinks like that, but each to their own ✌🏻

There are no downmarket names, only downmarket attitudes

No, seriously, there are down-market names.

We all know that.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/07/2023 08:41

I'm Irish and I've always considered it a down-market name, but that is probably just based on the Taras I've known.

Tara is feminine and smart.

I also like Sara, Cara, Lara. Mara, Java, Zara and Vera.
Akll bright and not too common.

SunnyFog · 29/07/2023 07:59

Indian or Irish, possibly.

xPeaceXx · 29/07/2023 07:18

Is it downmarket in the usa? I hear it as quite a classic choice, its classy in its simplicity. Never knew it was down market in the USA , but they have their own references, eg, daughters called McKenzie, Kennedy, Harper and Taylor. What sounds ''classy'' in America is very different.

continentallentil · 29/07/2023 00:34

SemperIdem · 28/07/2023 22:20

I really like it, assuming you are not based in the US? It tends to be pronounced “terra” in the US which is far less lovely.

Yes, and in the US it IS downmarket as a PP said.

But not in the UK.

continentallentil · 29/07/2023 00:32

I like it

Kings of Tara and all that

Cinnamongirlinthesand · 29/07/2023 00:31

Tara, name of the best little horse I've ever owned

Mochacino · 29/07/2023 00:19

Love it!

CallieQ · 29/07/2023 00:17

Lovely

UsingChangeofName · 29/07/2023 00:10

When I see it written down, I just read it as "Tara a bit" - which is how folk around here, say goodbye.

Then my next thought is ‘boom-di-ay’ too.

So, not for me.

CuttedUpAvocadoPear · 29/07/2023 00:06

I like it. Very Irish.

KnickerlessParsons · 29/07/2023 00:02

I like all the -ara names: Cara, Mara, Sara, Zara, Tara, Lara, Dara, Farrah,

Daisybuttercup12345 · 28/07/2023 23:50

PriamFarrl · 28/07/2023 22:22

It makes me want to say, ‘boom-di-ay’ but that might be my age.

Same lol.
Also reminds me of catarrh for some reason.
Sara
Lara
Thea

"As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill."

<music swells in the background>

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn"

PickledScrump · 28/07/2023 23:45

For me it’s very dated and I suppose what would be called down market.

Tara24 · 28/07/2023 23:43

It's a good name 😃

BatheInTheLight · 28/07/2023 23:43

I've known 3 Tara's and they were all lovely :-)
