I love Sydney for a girl, or Rowan.

Ashley or Robin for a boy. I wouldn't call a girl Ashley because it conjures up blonde airhead stereotypes for me on a girl but interestingly I really like it for a boy.

FDxx · 31/07/2023 04:12

Rowan is one of my favourites ever. Wren I love but I like it spelt Renn instead for a girl

TaigaSno · 31/07/2023 02:54

Rowan - love this, one of my favourite names!
Wren - I struggle to think of this as gender neutral, I think because it was strongly associated with women in history.
Robin - also love this!
Frankie - I dislike it, for no particular reason.
Stevie - nice as a nickname but not as a full name, use Stephen or Stephanie.
Sidney - also struggle to think of this as gender neutral and associate it generally as a male name.

My favourite gender neutral name would be Casey.

Rowan - love it for a boy, like it for a girl. I've known 4 males and 2 females with this name.
Wren - not keen for a girl. Not sure it's a boys' name at all? Never met a Wren at all though.
Robin - love it for a boy or a girl but would spell Robyn for a girl. I've known 1 boy Robin and 3 girl Robyns. Never met a girl Robin.
Frankie - not keen on it for a girl, don't like it at all for a boy. I do love Francesca but not keen on Frank, Francis or Franklin.
Stevie - like it for a girl, it's 'cool and funky'. Don't like it for a boy. I know 1 female Stevie.
Sidney - like it for a girl but spelled Sydney. Don't like it for a boy, it seems too middle aged although I know it's trendy now. Only ever met 1 girl Sydney and no boys.

My rankings would be very different for girls and boys:
girls - Robin, Stevie, Rowan, Sidney, Wren, Frankie
boys - Robin, Rowan, Frankie, Stevie, Sidney, Wren

As gender neutral names go, I like the surnamey kind of names which seem to have become very popular for girls but were originally male. I don't know if they're truly gender neutral or just female now. Names like:
Addison, Aubrey, Avery, Brodie, Bailey, Colby, Dakota, Eden, Erin, Fallon, Harley, Hadley, Jocelyn, Kennedy, London, Madison, Morgan, Peyton, Quinn, Riley, Sutton, Spencer, Taylor

HeyYouWithTheSadFace · 31/07/2023 01:03

I love Brodie and Georgie ☺️ I know both boys and girls with these names.

Also know male and female Harley and Brooklyn. I prefer Brooklyn for a girl (think it's the Lyn part that makes it look feminine to me).

I know a few kids called Ellis as well, both sexes.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/07/2023 21:33

Most of your names don't look gender neutral to me. Either that or they aren't actual names.

For gender neutral, maybe Evelyn, Vivian, Hilary, Ashley or Lindsay.

Chevrotains · 30/07/2023 20:36
  1. Rowan
  2. Robin
  3. Frankie
  4. Wren
  5. Stevie
  6. Sidney (like Sydney for a girl though Grin)
LavenderAndLime · 29/07/2023 14:44

Rowan and Robin: love both of these

Wren: ok

Frankie, Stevie, Sidney: not so keen, feel a bit dated to me

Sue

EugeneEufy · 29/07/2023 13:45

I’ve always loved Darrell for a girl after reading Malory Towers.

Maddy70 · 29/07/2023 09:40

Francis
Ashley
Frankie (I love!)

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 29/07/2023 09:26

Rowan - 1st choice

Wren - surely this is a girl's name? I can't imagine a boy being pleased that you'd saddled him with this one.

Robin - not gender neutral as spelt differently for both sexes.

Frankie - dreadful.

Stevie - see Frankie.

Sidney - again not gender neutral as spelt Sydney for girls usually.

I don't think Robin is really gender neutral as it's usually Robyn for a girl so most people would assume one way or the other depending on spelling. Quite a lot of names are like this and people will assume based on spellings.

Things like Rowan or Quinn definitely work for both.

How about using a full traditional name which has a neutral nickname instead? There are a lotnif names which have male and female variants but share a nickname.
George/Georgia, Georgina or Georgiana
Charles/Charlotte
Joseph/Joanna or Josephine
You've already alluded to Francis/Frances though I really don't like Francis/Frankie for a boy as that somehow feels more dated (same category as Keith and Raymond for me)

Love Wren and Robin! Also Noa/Noah, Aspen and Cedar.

PostOpOp · 29/07/2023 03:25

I don't like any of them.

I find the idea of specifically choosing a gender neutral name because it's neutral (most aren't really either) a bit strange. It's not like the child isn't going to have a sex that they'll be read as any way outside the early years. It's a bit like when parents want a boy, but gets a girl, and called her Jamesina, only it's more wishy washy. That's how I read the names on your list in the context you've given.

But you've asked on an internet forum from a bunch of strangers so you'll have opinions you disagree with - probably mine! - and it's ultimately doesn't matter. We're not a random sample as we've self-selected to answer having chosen to read you post on Mumsnet. Just choose what you like!

Changethetoner · 29/07/2023 02:40

Frankie is for a girl.
Stevie could be for a boy if short for Stephen.

I like Rowan and know both m and f.
I know a male Wren, who is in his seventies. Hope that helps.

Those are essentially boys names given to girls. And nicknames. That’s not really gender neutral. Leslie was a popular one. Dated now.

Proper gender neutral is Elon Musks and Grimes ( gender neutral name) child; X Æ A-12 .

Fair point about Leslie/Lesley.

Elon sounds like pylon, and Grimes sound grimy.

It spelled Sydney for a girl and Robyn. Not with an i

No it isn’t. Tell the actress Robin Wright that. Or the character Robin in Stranger Things. I much prefer Robin for both sexes.

Rowan - prefer for girl, find it a bit old fashioned for a boy
Wren - don’t see this as a boys name at all, love it for a girl
Robin - excellent name for both sexes
Frankie - prefer Frank or Francesca
Stevie - love it for a girl - Stevie Nicks - but would have it short for Stephanie.
Sidney - like it for both sexes

I also like Jamie for both. There’s also Jordan, Ashley, Riley, Bailey - I’m not keen myself but they have a unisex vibe to me.
