Is this dated now?
Are we oversaturated with Esmé's?

Love the name but am hesitant.

I like it, but only pronounced Ezmee. Don't like the Ezmay pronunciation.

Absolutely this.

And dear lord no phonetic spelling. I know an Esmae, an Ezmé and an Esmay. All wrong.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/07/2023 01:15

Lovely name. Not especially dated - or at least no more than any of the other names that aren't classics like Elizabeth, Emily, Charlotte, Alice etc. The Twilight thing's a blip few will remember imo - Esme more likely became popular on the back of other 2 syllable, vowel heavy names - Ellie, Ella, Elsie, Evie etc

Small issue is that people will often miss the accent off since it's not on a lot of keyboards- but the 2 different pronunciations may be more annoying (although that hasn't stopped the popularity of Maya, Evelyn etc)

MumofSpud · 28/07/2023 05:07

My DD(17) is Esme (Ez-May)

A few months ago I met a Renesmee Grin

Mumsnet thinks this is a real marmite name!

1vandal2 · 28/07/2023 00:32

It's very popular because of the Twilight films along with Bella/isabella

Daisybuttercup12345 · 28/07/2023 00:27

Esmae is much nicer.

shoopshoopdedoo · 27/07/2023 19:50

I really like Esme if pronounced Ez-mee, less keen on Ez-may.

Onesnowynight · 27/07/2023 18:14

Love it. Was going to be ds18 name had he been a girl. Dp hated it!

RuthW · 27/07/2023 17:37

LadyDanburysHat · 27/07/2023 16:12

I like it, but only pronounced Ezmee. Don't like the Ezmay pronunciation.

Me too

Carouselfish · 27/07/2023 17:17

Why not the full whack and Esmerelda? Or Emerald? Both better than the sneeze which is Esme.

toastofthetown · 27/07/2023 16:50

I don’t think it’s dated, but it is oversaturated to me. It’s been in the top hundred for the last 18 years now and was well used before then as well. If you are in England and Wales and popularity is a concern then the Dark Greener website is really good a visualising a names popularity.

continentallentil · 27/07/2023 16:45

Totally oversaturated, sorry.

And also whether you want Ez-mee or Ez-May you will spend 50% of the time getting the other

Esther maybe?

Or Estella..

Summer2424 · 27/07/2023 16:45

Hi @Frydaycryday really nice name

ShowOfHands · 27/07/2023 16:45

AdalineStephen · 27/07/2023 16:31

Esmée= Ez-may
Esme= Ez= mee

I teach several and the accent makes little difference. Two spelled Esme (no accent) pronounced Ez-may and one similarly spelled Esme but pronounces Es-mee. Also teach an Esmé, an Esmae and an Esmée

hollyblueivy · 27/07/2023 16:44

It's lovely

AnkleWidget · 27/07/2023 16:43

You clearly don’t have a horse mad pre-teen and have yet to discover “This Esme” 😁

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/07/2023 16:41

If its pronounced as Es-may then yes Esmee no

chinchin77 · 27/07/2023 16:31

Love it, was on our list ✔️

AdalineStephen · 27/07/2023 16:31

Esmée= Ez-may
Esme= Ez= mee

Squirrelsnut · 27/07/2023 16:30

Esma? Just a bit different. Sweet actress Esma Cannon was in some cracking films.

SusanandMidge · 27/07/2023 16:28

No I don't think it's dated. It's quite popular but 'dated' would really apply to names like Gemma, Lauren, Cathy, Elaine, Sharon etc that were popular in the 70s and 80s but you don't really hear many people under about 35 being called anymore. There's plenty of little Esmes around.

YourMommaWasASnowblower · 27/07/2023 16:15

I know a few little ones called it. I’m not a fan, but wouldn’t call it dated.

LadyDanburysHat · 27/07/2023 16:12

I like it, but only pronounced Ezmee. Don't like the Ezmay pronunciation.
